Wellsville Historical Society Hosts the 4th Armored

"Remembering Our Freedom" is the theme of this year's visit by the 4th Armored Division Historical Group. Coming this Saturday & Sunday, June 12 & 13, they will be bivouaced at Wellsville's River Museum. It's a living history week-end brought to you by the ville's Historical Society. It's to honor all the families & friends of anyone who ever served our country.

The U.S. Army's WWII 4th Armored Div., under the command of Major Gen. John S. Wood, landed in Normandy a few day's after D-Day in 1944. The 4th Armored was a tank division that was part of Gen. Patton's push to drive back and defeat the Nazi menace. They blitzed 700 miles through the heart of France and broke through the Siegfried Line in unprecedented speed causing a soldier to ask "who the hell are you guys?" as they passsed infantry troops. They just answered "we're Georgy's boys" referring to Gen. Patton.

The Historical Group will set up displaying authentic WWII equipment and weapons. The display hours are 10:00 to 6:00 Saturday and 10:00 to 1600 hours Sunday. There will be a weapons demonstration firing rounds Saturday at 1 P.M. and again at 4 P.M.

Anyone with any type of war memorabilia or pictures they would like to add to the displays are welcome. Contact Historical Society President Brassy Beresford with any questions or for additional information. Your contributions will be greatly appreciated and returned after closing this year's event.

The event is free and open to the public and the museum will be open for touring too. Pictured above is Brassy with members of the Historical Group at last year's visit. Brassy is holding a Browning Automatic Rifle like the one he married while serving in the Pacific Theater during WWII. It's one of the weapons the 4th will have on display. The museum is located at 1013 Riverside behind the Central Methodist Church on Main St.
