Neighborhood Stablization Program Underway

With a program that started last year when stimulus funds were made available to rehabilitate abandoned or neglected properties the Wellsville Fire Dept. Chief Bill Smith has been busy. As part of his duties he has to inspect derelict structures to determine if they are worthy for saving or if they should be demolished. With the economy going sour since the 1980s the village has more than its fair share of abandoned derelict structures. Over the past three decades many of those structures have fallen so bad into disrepair they are structurally unsafe. Smitty has a list of over 20 such buildings.

Out of that list, six were chosen to have torn down first. The Chief actually submitted nine of them to the County but was originally told there was only enough funds to do six. Contracts were awarded by the County Commissioners for the first six. Last month Smith advised Village Council that there were enough funds to award contracts for the other three. At that time Smith announced there are 14 others on his list that still need to have the legal paper work completed. That involves expensive rounds of advertising and hearings in Common Pleas Court.

A couple of weeks ago, on May 24, the first of that group of six was brought down. The first was a private residence in the 900 block of Commerce and just this past week they brought down the old Modern Casino building. The Modern Casino was located in the 1300 block on Main.

Pictured above are the two buildings that have been brought down. The work is being done by Maverick Construction from the Youngstown area according to the newspaper. Workers from Maverick said they are next moving up Main.
