Lost & Found Department

At last week's Village Council meeting it was announced that plans are being made to build a new Wellsville Honor Roll. The Honor Roll will list all the names of Wellsville area residents who has ever served in the Armed Forces. Originally constructed in 1943 the Honor Roll, pictured above, was located along Main Street next to the old City Hall. No one is certain when it happened but it is thought that old memorial was taken down in preparation when Shoub Towers was built.

Wellsville Historical Society President Brassy Beresford advises the last anyone recalls, it was disassembled and stored in the basement of the old Liberty Theater. At the time it was hoped to find a new location for the Honor Roll. Beresford said he has been contacted by State Sen. Jason Wilson's office in an attempt to locate the old memorial. Wilson's office has been contacted for possible grants to help finance the new proposed wall. Beresford is making an appeal for any kind of information on the fate of the original Honor Roll.

Wellsville's Veterans Memorial Council is spearheading the drive to build the new one out of brick and block. According to spokesman George Crews a site has been selected and approvals granted to go ahead with the plans. A picture of an artist's drawing of the new Honor Roll can be seen on our post of the June 1 Village Council meeting. It is estimated that the new memorial will cost something in the neighborhood of $20,000. It will be a permanent and very attractive memorial to all our area veterans. Donations can be made out to the "Wellsville Honor Roll" and mailed to either George Crews at 16962 State Rt. 45, Wellsville, OH 43968 or Debbie Koffel at 45774 Madison Dr., East Liverpool, OH 43920. A bank account has been opened to keep all donations separate from other Memorial Council activities. Crews & Koffel said the account already has a small donation deposited.

In the meantime if anybody knows what happened to the old Honor Roll please contact Beresford or leave a comment on here. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
