Tragedy Averted In Spectacular Crash
Sunday - August 8: Fortunately there were no injuries reported in an early Sunday afternoon collision in Wellsville. At approximately 12:30 P.M. the driver of the gray Chevy pictured here apparently failed to see the white Ford stopped to make a turn from Broadway onto 7th Street. The driver of the Ford was stopped to allow traffic off 7th St. to clear the street. There is only enough room for one car at a time to get through.
According to witnesses the driver of the Chevy was west bound on Broadway at a high rate of speed. At the last moment he swerved to the left and clipped the left side of the Ford. From there he traveled into Broadway Park, struck the historic lamp post, knocking it over and slid down the entire length of the pole before coming to a stop. One officer on the scene stated it was a wonder the Chevy didn't roll over. Both air bags in the Chevy were deployed.
The driver of the Chevy fled the scene on foot immediately following the accident but was quickly apprehended at a near-by residence. Charges are pending. No identities were released at the scene.

Most of the cars do travel Broadway at a high rate of speed. Something needs to be done before someone gets really hurt or killed. Maybe some speed bumps would help or the police patroling Broadway more. Remember when you had to slow down at the end of each block to go over the bump in the road, they need to bring those back.
