Sewage Treatment Conversion Begins

Monday - August 2: The much awaited conversion project at Wellsville's Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) got underway today as promised. Actually they began last Friday starting to disassemble the first digester according to United Water Plant Superintendent Greg Stewart. United Water operates the STP for the Village.

Workers from winning bidder Mike Pusateri Excavating Company moved equipment in last Friday and began the removal of the first digester. The $451,862 project will convert the old anarobic digesters to aerobic ones The Wellsville plant has two of them. According to Bill Boyle of GG&J, the engineering company for the project, the new method of treating the raw sewage will eliminate the stench that comes from the plant. The bacteria that causes the stench will be killed off in the new digesters before the sludge reaches the drying beds per Boyle.

Boyle estimates it will be approximately 150 days for Pusateri to have the project completed. Pusateri will also be installing a new diesel fuel above ground tank for the plant's emergency generator. That will replace the one that is underground which was found not to be in compliance with modern standards. That was a change order added to the contract that was approved at a Special Council meeting July 20. Boyle estimates it will add an additional $25,000 to $30,000 to the contract. Engineering estimate for the project before the fuel tank was added was $485,000.
