Historic Photo Quiz
This is a picture of the Maude Fogo home in Wellsville taken during the 1936 flood. We don't know if the water is rising or receding by then but it was taken on March 19 of that year. That house & that intersection have greatly changed in the last 74 years.
Can you tell us where it is? You can right click to enlarge. Bonnie & Brassy is not allowed to answer. It was one of the pictures on file at the River Museum.

Riverside between 4th and 5th Sts. ?
18th St and Clark Ave
Come on folks.....I'm waiting, I'm too young to know this one. Come on --- ask your parents, grandparents, anybody older than you. I'm waiting.
Ah ha! Brassy found one that is stumping you good folks. One guess is close to the correct location but not close enough. We'll let you know tomorrow if no one guesses it.

9th and broadway?
Nope...

6th or 5th and broadway
For some reason, my gut is telling me this is somewhere on Commerce. But not close to the other guesses, so I'm not letting the hint help me.
I say the street isn't wide enough to be on the split portion of Broadway - though I guess it could be further north on Broadway.
And it just doesn't look like anywhere on Riverside to me.
The house's fancy fencework means this was a showy end of town at the time.
Which likely brings us back to Broadway.
Oh well - I'm waiting for the answer like everyone else...
5 or 6th and broadway
Phil - the wrought iron fence sometime over the years got replaced with hedges. The house is now yellow with maroon trim that sits on the corner of 6th & Broadway. With the water & the angle the picture was taken from Broadway doesn't look that wide. The photographer was on 6th near where there is a small driveway now. Other than the porch railing the house looks the same today as it did back then.
Thanks everyone. That was fun.

OK: I've got it now...
The house is on the south corner of the intersection - which means the photographer faced north-west.
What threw me was that the street to the right of the photographer isn't wide enough to be Broadway at that point. It isn't - it's 6th. The opening toward the center of the photograph is Broadway.
So... Can someone go back to that location and try re-creating the picture today? No, we don't need flood water to make it authentic!
A great photo. Thanks for sharing.
I enjoyed this quiz so much. I am 71 yrs old. Our home was at 615 Riverside. Dr Neitz on the corner then us then School nurse Mrs Calhoun. My Grandmother lived at 333 Broadway. Studing the photo I also felt the street looked too narrow. Guess that is what is meant by LOOK AT THINGS FROM ALL ANGLES.
Dorothy - That was/is in your old neighbor hood. Bet you passed that house millions of times on your way to Grandma's. Glad you enjoyed it. We'll work on more. Do you still live in town?
Phil - we'll try to get one later on this afternoon. Now we have to get to some football stuff.
Thanks again for all the responses. We enjoyed it too.
