On The Calendar

Last week kicked off the high school baseball & track seasons. Hope all those athletes were able to stay healthy with all the cold, wet weather. Winter lingered on this past week in spite of what the calendar says. This week is suppose to be more spring like. Maybe some of those snowbirds that wintered in Florida can bring some sunshine and warmth back with them. Whattaya say Ed?

Monday's meeting with the Army Corp of Engineers at the Alumi Center is about the flood control system. As reported earlier our system dates back nearly 70 years and many of the pumps are in sad shape. They are so old that replacement parts are no longer available. It is estimated that replacing them would be $1 million plus, money we don't have.

The program for Tuesday evening's Arts Club meeting will feature organist Clark Wilson.

Deadlines for registration for both the girl's softball league and t-ball are coming this week. The softball league is for girls ages 8 to 14 for their fast pitch teams. Last day to register for softball is this coming Wednesday. The T-ball league is for children ages 4 to 7. The deadline for T-ball registration is Sunday, April 10. For more information on either league call Mandy at 330-532-9356.

The First Baptist Pastoral Anniversary Dinner Saturday evening is to celebrate Rev. Roosevelt Thompson's 30 years with this Wellsville parish. Rev. Walter Houston, Pastor of the Cleveland Temple of Praise, will be the guest speaker. The New Hope Male Chorus will provide music for the evening. Reservations may be made by calling 330-532-2654. We must be getting long in the tooth. Didn't think my buddy Rev. Thompson was old enough to pastor for 30 years!

The annual Chamber Sunrise Business Breakfast Forum is being hosted by the EL Chamber and the Buckeye Online School for Success this year. It will be held at the BOSS Conference Room on Monday morning, April 11. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 330-385-0845 or e-mailing office@elchamber.com. Deadline for reservations is Wednesday, April 6. Victor Hipsley, President of the Government Policy Group located in Columbus will be the keynote speaker.

One last thing we wanted to mention is “citySweep 2011”. It is in commemoration of Earth Day and sponsored by Heritage-WTI for the collection and disposal of household hazardous wastes for area residents. Household hazardous wastes are commonly identified by the words “Warning, Caution or Danger on the container. Those containers may have corrosives, toxins, reactive or flammable contents. “citySweeep 2011” will be held on Saturday, April 23 from 8 AM to 12 Noon at 1250 St. George Street, East End, come rain or shine. They will be accepting many items such as paint, paint products, pool chemicals, light bulbs, batteries, old televisions and computer system components. There is a limit of up to 10 gallons of liquid wastes or 25 pounds. They will not be accepting mercury, asbestos, microwaves, explosives, gases, propane tanks or business wastes. Call 330-386-2194 with any questions.

Have a good week everybody...

i think the hazardous waste collection is only for city residents. not sure, but think that's how it's been in the past.

I don't think that Southern Local has a boys' baseball team this year, not enough boys expressed an interest to field a team. So, it will be girls' only game on Monday. Maybe someone can confirm this, but I am fairly sure I read this in the paper.

We're not sure if there are any residency restrictions on the citySweep. The flyer we picked up didn't mention anything. It did say for "East Liverpool area residents". Technically speaking we are in the ELO area. Might be a good idea to call before making the trip. It wouldn't be good public relations for WTI to put that kind of restrictions on something they are commemorating that is a nationwide event.

You're correct about SL not having a baseball team. Not enough jocks out that way. My bad..we remembered reading that after you jogged our memory. Just to be safe we confirmed it with the WHS AD this AM. My apologies...
