Memorial Council Preparations

Wellsville's Memorial Council is busy getting ready for the village's Memorial Day annual observance. The council consists mainly of veterans and individuals from VFW Posts 5647 & 9285 and American Legion Post 70. WWII veteran Melvin Boggs is this year's president along with Jim Volino as V.P. Debbie Koffel is secretarty/treasurer and Dale Barnhart serves as Chaplain.

This year's observance starts at 9 A.M. at the Memorial Site on the 4th Street Square with prelude music performed by the WHS Band. Following the ceremonies on the square a parade will form and proceed to Springhill Cemetery where the tribute to America's veterans will continue. All exercises will be held at the WHS Auditorium if the weather is inclement. We'll have more on this year's ceremonies as Monday, May 25, draws closer.

At the cemetery yesterday members of the the newly formed Boy Scout Troop 29 and others were placing flags on the graves of veterans. If you want an idea of how many sons and daughters of Wellsville served our country throughout history just go up there and see all the flags. It's awesome. There's veterans dating back to the Civil War such as two members of the Putnam family pictured above in their family plot. There is probably some Revolutionary War veterans up there too. That was a few years before Wellsville was founded.

Also pictured above in the blue uniform is pack member Dominic Walker preparing to place that flag in the stanchion. Finally is four more members of Troop 29. From the left is Asst. Scout Master Dan Kirkbride Scout Master Tom Eberhart, Scout Alik Bardford and Scout Justice Cehrs.

As a veteran myself I would like to say thanks to all who pitched in on this part and kudos to Mike L. and his assistants up there. They got the cemetery looking real good.
