Thoughts Bouncing Off My Window VI

Man-oh-man, if it isn't one thing it's another. My collection of clippings that I save for ideas keep piling up and I'm having a rough time finding a moment to do any writing. Yesterday I was all set to devote some serious time to the blog and the phone rings just as I was set to start. Had to shut it all down, put it away and leave to take care of other things. If it ain't the missus it's the kids assigning me homework. I need a place to hide!

Baard Energy
Things continue to move along with Baard becoming a reality. They are getting their permits filed with the EPA for approval. Eventually there will be public hearings before the EPA gives the company their final approval. State Sen. Jason Wilson spoke at the Realtors meeting last month encouraging their members to invest in the future to get ready for the influx of people Baard will bring about. Tracy Drake told us the river crane is set for final inspection and testing. That's the crane they recently installed in Wellsville's Port Authority facility to unload coal barges. The Chamber is getting ready for a dinner on Feb. 28th at which Stephen Dopuch, V.P. of Baard's Energy Business Development, will be the key note speaker. Apparently they are expecting a huge crowd. It was moved from the Alumni Center to the WHS gymnasium to handle the crowd. Finally Tom Giambroni tells us Baard got an inadvertant boost from the US DOE. They want to devote more capital studying the shooting of CO2 into the ground which is what Baard proposes at the new plant.

County Health Commissioner
Trial date for Bob Morehead's charges of fraud and theft in office has been scheduled for Aug. 12th. They are calling this a speedy trial? I guess the wheels of justice do move slowly. A retired judge from Stark County will be hearing the case. An attorney from the State Auditor's office will the prosecutor.

New Businesses
The old Potters Bank & Trust building on the square will be reopened Feb. 26th as the Buckeye River Saloon. It will be an OSU Buckeye theme bar. Hopefully Mrs. Gates will have better luck with this one. She previously leased the building to others that had a rough time keeping the place civilized. It has been sitting vacant for several months. We're glad to see she hasn't given up and being a Buckeye football fan I hope for the best.

We now have a full fledge accounting firm in the village by the name of MAA & Associates. It is operated out of Mary Jo Needham's home on Riverside and according to their web page they offer a full line of accounting services. Mrs. Needham has been a CPA for nearly 22 years now and is licensed for all three states in our surrounding area. If you need help with taxes, investments. payroll or whatever check them out.

WHS Tigers
Since last writing about the boy's basketball team the Tigers dropped one spot in the AP Poll which I don't understand. Must have something to do with strength of schedule is my guess. The last few teams they have played do not have winning records for the season. They play their final regular season game next Tuesday. It's a make-up game with Beaver Local. Didn't know Bug Thompson was a religious man. According to what I read the coach put the fear of God into the team at half time this past Tuesday with the game against Lowellville. The Tigers let the Rockets get within five at the break. After the intermission they came out as if the devil was on their tails. This team continues to impress me with their depth of talent. Jaimon Edison finished that game with a game high 27 points.

Senior Night will be next Tuesday but this past Tuesday D.J. Douglas got honored early. His father, Mark Douglas, is in the Army and was being deployed overseas yesterday. God's speed for a safe return Sarge. Thanks to WKMXlive you can follow the Tigers no matter where Uncle Sam sends you if you have a computer handy.

Speaking of Coach Thompson - did you see the piece on him in last Sunday's ER Riverstyle section? It was a full page write-up. In my opinion it is a justly deserved honor. Now we know where the nick name Bug came from. We just don't know why. The coach said he didn't either. He thinks it might have come from him being quick. Guess we'll just have to speculate on how he got tagged with that one.

Bob Lloyd's Photo Collection
In Sunday's MJ Lifestyles section Bob Lloyd's collection of historic Wellsville WFD and flood pictures was featured. Erin Colella did a nice job with it. A friend of mine told me about Bob's collection. He had several pictures of some of the floods at the open house they had a few months ago. It is impressive and there are scenes of Wellsville's past I have never seen before. It is amazing to see how much this place we call home has changed over the years.

Wellsville Council
Not much to report on the last council meeting. They didn't have enough people for a forum. Maybe they should schedule them around the Tiger's games. That's just a wild guess. Other than that they are thinking of looking into buying the old Sky Bank building next door, going for a $1 million dollar bond, giving village employees a raise, collecting an amusement tax and shot down the village landlord's request to be forgiven a sewage bill. Did you see the piece in yesterday's MJ about the Governor's Council on People with Disabilities comittee reviewing the states more than 1.2 million handicap parking tags? Guess the village's concern is also a statewide issue.

S.H. Bell
If you been following the papers the EPA is on this business about their polluting ways. Can't help of thinking about the coal dust problem we had/have in the ville and how similar it sounds to me. It will be interesting to see how this will be handled. From the write ups it makes WTI concerns seem trivial.

Good news on Carbon Dioxide?

Actually the current administration revised plans to have the government finance 70% or more of a demonstration coal fired plant that would emit no Carbon Dioxide (ie the FutureGen Project) because it got too expensive even for them ( it had ballooned to 1.8 billion with no end in sight). So as a consolation prize the Department of Energy announced that it would pay for the gas capturing technology but that industry would have to build and pay for the commercial plants that use the technology. Plans for an experimental plant were scratched.

Also FYI, Vaclav Smil, an energy expert at the University of Manitoba, has estimated that capturing just 10 percent of the CO2 emitted from coal fired plants at the current rates would require moving volumes of compressed carbon dioxide greater than the total annual flow of oil worldwide.

For more information on this by go to http://dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com and scroll down to “Is capturing CO2 a pipe dream”?

Rosie Goss has missed more meetings than she has attended. They need to kick her off. It was said she missed two in a row without calling in to say she would not be there. She knew when she ran, that her work schedule would not permit her to be at meetings the way she should. She should have not even ran for council, she is never there, plus she does nothing. I hope they kick her off, and put someone on that will be there, and do a good job, Goss could care less about council. So the Tiger games have nothing to do with it.

I read in the Review where Wellsville Council was spanked in the thanks and spanks, for their dislike of member Rosie Goss missing meetings without calling to give a reason. Truth be told, she always misses meetings. All Allmon said was, she needs to let someone know when, and the reason why she will not be there. I served on Council in the 90's, and we always had to give a reason. It's obvious Goss has no interest in being a Councilperson. No, Council should not be spanked but thanked, for letting the public who elected Goss, how unprofessional she is. Good work Allmon, it's about time she got called on all of her absenteeism.

Anonymous said...

I wish someone would use Bob Lloyds pictures of the fireman and paint them on the flood wall. The firemen, if anything, should be a mural. That would be great!

Anonymous said...

I agree with both comments concerning Goss, why should the public not know who is missing and why. We have a right to know, we elect these people to work for us. Bull on that private talks, The spanks in The Review is wrong, good job Council keep us informed on her absenteeism. All members need to be held accountable.

There have been other members in years past that have missed several meetings and an issue was never made of it. Goss has been on council for two years and not a word was said. Funny how Allmon has an issue with her missing two out of three meetings. Maybe the issue isn't her missing the meetings. Maybe there is more to this. Knowing Goss, she will find out the reason.

Mr. Allmon was completely unprofessional with his lack of respect to a fellow council member. Council should have confronted Goss with their issue, not air it publicily. If they had discussed the issue with her first and then she blatantly missed meetings with no explanation, then chastise her publicly. I would bet money that not one of those council members called her the following day to see why she missed the meeting. Bet they would feel like real jackasses if something was wrong with her or one of her family members. In my opinion, Goss has become a target, but she won't come unprepared.

Anonymous said...

Here is a hypothetical question..If a council member came to meetings drunk all the time, would they ever complain about that, so the press could put it in the paper?

Anonymous said...

Like I said before, she always misses meetings, and why should the public be kept in the dark. She wanted the job, but she does nothing. Residents need to know when and why she misses. There is too much behind closed doors, sneaky crap at Village Hall as it is. She is a public servant, act like one. Good job Allmon, the other members should have done this as soon as Goss got on Council, because she started missing meetings from day one.

Anonymous said...

I think Rosie doesnt show up at Council because Cruella isnt there to tell her what to do and how to vote. She knew the requirements of this elected seat when she ran for it. If she can't meet the requirements, then get off. Voters deserve council to at least show up for meetings. Heaven knows they dont show up for anything else that goes on or show any support for other things that happen in the village. They all need a clear job description of what the voters in town expect from them, and if they dont want to do it, give it to someone who does.

Anonymous said...

It's simple, when any member of Council is going to miss a meeting, call and let someone know when and why you are missing. This should be reported at the meeting, the public has a right to know.

Anonymous said...

Allmon better watch himself or he may end up be labled as a trouble maker like Dinch.

Anonymous said...

The public has a right to know what? Why a council member misses a meeting? How would you like that reported? Simply by saying they are working or illness or personal reasons? Or would you like more detailed information such as the person has suffered a loss in the family, a serious illness or to hung over to attend or maybe suffering from cramps and bloating. Geesh, I'll agree that a council person should let another one know they will be unable to attend but you people act like it caused a big problem at a meeting. Hell, if a member missing a meeting makes headlines, apparently there wasn't much happening at the meeting. Former council people missed meetings because of work, one missed because of a sick relative, and another showed up intoxicated most of the time. If the people on this blog are unpleased with Goss then maybe you need to be running for council. That's the problem people, no one wants to run for office in this town, so you're stuck with what's available. Wonder how many people currently sitting on council has a job?

Anonymous said...

peas and carrots: you always seem to think everything should be done behind closed doors. that's that gets public bodies into trouble.
Allmon had every right ---and obligation --- to question why another council member is absent and to do it in public.
what part of "PUBLIC OFFICIAL" don't you get?
The last poster is correct. If you can't be at a meeting, call the president or mayor and explain why, and the excuse should be made known at the meeting before a motion to excuse is even made.
THAT's the responsible way to do things.
I don;'t even know any of your council people, but this is just the way it should be done

Anonymous said...

Yeah, if you have someone who is actually trying to do something, and fulfill campaign promises, you sure are a trouble maker.

Anonymous said...

Not so Rosie, you hit the nail right on the head. Dinch did control her, she did her work for her, in return Goss voted how Dinch told her to. Now Dinch is gone and Goss is on her own, and does not know the first thing about being a Councilperson. You are right, she needs to quit, Dinch can't do her job anymore.

Anonymous said...

One poster stated that a former council person came to meetings intoxicated most of the time. Why was that never an issue? Why was that tolerated? Why wasn't that person held accountable? Why was that behavior never brought up when the press was there? Why didn't other council members care about the public enough to address that issue then? Did that behavior go on for years without a peep from anyone on council. I am not saying I agree with Ms. Goss's behavior, but the double standard is so big you could drive a Mac Truck through it.

Why don't you run Dolly, you think you know everthing. You don't know crap.

Anonymous said...

Wellsville Dolly on here again. When she talks nobody listens.

Anonymous said...

Who is Dolly and what do they have to do with this topic?

Anonymous said...

Please don't encourage her to run for office..things are bad enough!

Anonymous said...

She should also get off all these committees in town that people are trying to think of ways to throw her off of. She should leave on her own, and quit driving the powers that be nuts. Won't happen. She needs hit over the head, and then that isnt near enough.

I've been to many, many councili meetings when the councilman you all keep saying was drunk was present. Iknow who you mean and I've never seen any indication he was impaired.

[Quote:I'll agree that a council person should let another one know they will be unable to attend but you people act like it caused a big problem at a meeting.]

It's not the point of missing "a" meeting at issue. If it becomes a habit and there's not a legitimate reason (i.e., health, work, family emergency), then it's apparent the council member is shirking his or her duty.
That's why some record needs kept on WHY a council person misses meetings and how many. I think most public bodies have a policy (maybe it's a law, don't know) that outlines how many meetings a member can miss before they are kicked off.
If a public official misses many meetings, then what good is he or she to the community he/she is serving?
peas and carrots just can't grasp the concept of "public" official and the obligations they have and responsibilities they have to the PUBLIC (translation: TAXPAYERS)

Anonymous said...

There have have been 3 meetings so far and Goss missed 2. Ok...she should have called someone. But, wasnt there a council person who missed quite a few meetings towards the end of the year. I like and respect this person, and his family, but he didnt call everytime he was going to be absent. He was excused without any of the council berating him in public. Yes, the sad truth was that he had lost a family member and he deserved his time to grieve. But if we go by Allmon's belief that this is a job and you should treat it as such, well not too many work places give you that kind of time off for a death in the family. Maybe thats why the other members of council didnt say a word in regards to Goss because they know that things happen when you least expect them. Maybe Allmon should follow their lead and handle this differently instead of trying to badger the little woman on council. I hope at the next meeting Goss addresses the issue. Until then I hope that nothing serious happened and that all is well.

Uh...so if you really want to run for council, mayor.etc....you should be unemployed, retired or disabled?? What a shame that we want to rip on another human being who works hard and feel she should quit council because she has a job. Some jobs dont give you the luxury of picking and choosing your work days and shifts. If this is the only thing Allmon can find to complain about well I cant wait to see what the rest of his 4 years will bring.

Let me understand this. You dont mind as a taxpayer paying someone who you, (if you bother ot vote) elect, to not do their job. You are every elected officials wet dream. Every taxpayer and voter worth their salt would like to see their elected officials held accountable. Rosie Goss doesnt get a pass for any reason. They are PAID to do the villages business. They arent volunteering their time stupid.

I rejected one comment from an anonymous commenter about the council situation. They were trying to introduce the gender & racial card and I won't allow it. Any person - I don't care who it is - should be judged on their own personal merit. Period.

So you are saying Goss should not be excused, or any other council member for that matter, for any reason whatsoever?

Opinion you are heartless if you think that a council member who is human and has a life outside of village business does not get an excuse to miss a meeting if it pertains to their jobs or families. I would suggest you run and let us all know who you are so we can vote for you and then we will keep track of your attendance record!

Anonymous said...

To Opinion.....yep I vote....but I didnt know that I should have voted for someone who is unemployed. I commend those who decide to step up and run for any office. But...when that time comes and these same people we pay go down to 1 meeting a month..should they still make the same wage????
Remember that when your spouting your self righteous bull about how wrong Goss is. If You start pointing fingers at 1 person you better take a good hard look at all of them.

Anonymous said...

First of all, how do you know the council member who lost a family member didn't call to say he would not be at the 2 meetings he missed. I happen to know he did call and told several people he would not be attending a few meetings after the passing of a relative. So get your stories straight, and have a little respect, if you have any. He always let us know when he was not coming. Now Goss, that's another story.

Anonymous said...

I thought I told you to get off this site Dolly, nobody cares what you think.

Anonymous said...

I would like to say to the idiot that brought the death of a council members relative into this. First of all not only did he let the Mayor know, but also the president of council also knew when and why he would not be there. Also, his first meeting back, he thanked council and the VILLAGE RESIDENTS for understanding his grieving the passing of his mom. Please have some respect and leave him out of this Allmon--Goss issue, because that is really what it is. God bless you Joey, and your family.

Anonymous said...

I did not say that no council member should never be exused for any reason from a meeting. But if your job, which you already had when you ran for the office, keeps you from attending another paid job, then you shouldn't have run. I would love to have a job, get paid for it, and not work. Don't put meaning that I don't intend. Ofcourse, every person has to miss work for reasons out of their control. But, as I said, dont run for paid office, if you cant fulfill the requirements. It isnt a hard concept to grasp.

Anonymous said...

She ran for Council, because at the time, the Cataldos, Tony and Jack, were giving Surace fits. So not only did he talk her into running, but he campained hard for her. See he wanted to get rid of Jack, Tony was not running in that year because he was in the middle of his term. The plan worked, Goss won and Jack lost. So Surace got his wish, however it backfired, because Goss can't stand Surace and vice versa. So see, that's why she ran, she knew she worked turns at her job, and so did Surace, but they didn't care. Just so Jack was gone. Now Surace wishes he never asked her to run. Thats politics folks, take it or leave it.

Anonymous said...

Sorry, I meant to put my user name on the last post.

Anonymous said...

Well if that was her reason for running, it will be easy for her to come up with a better one to resign. I used to hear her at the council meetings before she was elected, and she sounded intelligent and like she would do something. That sure went to hell after she was elected. I think I more agree with the Diane Dinch scenario of why she doenst show up.

Anonymous said...

You're right, the mayor did want Rosie on council because he thought she would be a yes person and she would hopefully help with votes when he ran again. His plan blew up in his face and Rosie is her own person. She has been on council for 2 years, and starting a third term, and nobody has complained until Allmon came along. She has missed 2 of 3 meetings this year and you people are ready to get rid of her? What a joke. Half of you could only dream of having the courage to run for office. Real easy to sit back and sling the mud, isn't it? Rosie isn't going anywhere and the more you try to battle her, the more determined she will be. Keep complaining because you only fuel her fire........HA HA HA!

Anonymous said...

Nah, she will mess up, plus she's deadweight. Believe me Allmon was right, Goss can't just talk a good game, she has to take the JOB seriously, she hasn't yet. She can defend her missing any way she wants, but the other council members don't have to take her bull. They will have just cause to kick her off, no matter what her excuse is, she misses too damn many meetings. She does not have the time to devote to council, and she knew it when she ran. She's only kidding herself, residents and the other council members know better.
