It's been kinda of quiet in this sleepy river village. Translated it's been down right boring. There hasn't been much fodder for the blog mill. Except for a couple of Dave Lloyd supporters there hasn't been any campaigning going on. I mean nothing - no ads, no signs that I can find. As announced on ORL Dave Lloyd got a web site up and running for his mayoral bid. Sparky used that to give Dave a backhanded endorsement on the WHS Alumni web site. Other than that there has been nothing - nada, zero, ziltch. Here it is almost six weeks until election and I thought this was going to be an exciting one. Maybe things will heat up in October.
There wasn't even a council meeting to comment on this past week. For the lack of a quorum the regularly scheduled meeting was cancelled. Mayor Joe indicated there might be something on the police department thing this week. Lucille Huston told us there was a final interview to be conducted this past Tuesday. No meeting. No reports. Nothing. Yawn...
Eagles Aerie Demolished
The most exciting thing I've seen in the past few weeks was the knocking down of the Eagles Club on Main Street. It happened a week ago last Saturday and was done by Extreme Trucking & Excavating. They brought down the three story structure part in one day. According to news reports the building was well over 100 years old and the back wall was beginning to buckle out which presented a very hazardous situation. This one won't become a parking lot. From what I've been told the Eagles plan to rebuild once funding is secured. I think that building was home to the first MacLean's Funeral Home. I remember the story old "Cap" MacLean told me years ago how his father use to bring bodies across the river for their WV customers on a flat boat skiff to prepare them for their funeral. "Cap" said he had to help carry them up & down the river bank. I don't think he was pulling my leg and I believe he was talking about the Eagles building.

By the way Ms. Kaiser, the word is aerie as in a lofty nest of any large bird, a nest of a bird of prey such as an eagle or a hawk. It is pronounce air-eee. The demolished building was the home of Eagle's Aerie 772, not Area 772 as you reported.
Holly Development Construction Wellsville LLC
This is a new business that located in the old Perpetual building on Main St. According to the picture in The Review "the business specializes in land acquisition for major real estate development". Other than the names of the owners and other principal personnel there's not much information to be found on the company. I guessing the company is getting in position to be a major player in the future developments when Baard Energy comes to town. When Baard gets the green light there's going to be a flurry of activity all around the area. At any rate we wish Holly Development the best and it's nice to see them locate in the heart of the ville.
Wellsville Hall of Famers
Last Wednesday there was a picture of this years inductees in the WHS Athletic Hall of Fame in the MJ. There wasn't an article about the inductees and I couldn't find any information on the Alumni site about them other than the year they graduated. I remember Tommy Wilson being a terror on the basketball court and sort of remember something about Greg Pullie being a fleet footed track star. Both Wilson and Pullie were in the Class of '84. "Spike" Carter (Class of '54) doesn't ring any bells. From the picture on the plaque I'm guessing his claim to fame was on the gridiron. I remember folks talking about "Chub" Carter from my younger years. Any relation?
Class of '31 Nance Checkler was way before my time. It looks like he was also a football star and that was in the days before they had good padding in the helmets! Maybe you readers can help us out here. It would be nice to know the story about these folks and why they were chosen.
The Pete Amato Memorial Boardwalk
If you haven't been up that way lately it appears that the boardwalk is nearly completed. The flooring is all done and the railing is up. If you walk out onto the deck that was installed over the old bridge abutment and look up you can see a lovely view of the underside of the Route 7 overpass. However if you turn around you can get a nice view of the latest additions of the floodwall murals. At any rate it's a nice addition and complements the floodwall murals. I imagine Susie will be updating her pictures in the near future.
11th Street Playground
Casey Barto reported that the playground is to be dedicated to the late Bill Yost. Mr. Yost maintained that playground across from his house for years and kept it in good shape. His efforts were all volunteer and many folks passing by didn't even know who he was. As was his way he just took it upon himself to take care of the place without any thoughts of being paid. That's the kind of guy he was.

You're right, Nib, everything seems dead, and not just in Wellsville. The papers have become so dull that it's a challenge to find something to respond to. You've done a good job "bouncing things of your window," though.
I don't expect anything to happen in the Wellsville mayoral campaign unless Lloyd brings it to the mayor. Clearly Joe wants to run a silent campaign. The last thing he wants to do is get drawn into a public discussion of issues, which is exactly why Lloyd must force his hand.
Go to the Alumni Site now. Surace is taking credit for about everything but building the Town to begin with........
Spike Carter has a brother you might remember, Frowl Carter. Chubby was a cousin I think, who has since passed away.
Man if you don't remember Frowl you ain't from the ville.

Just did a quick scan of the Alumni page. I'll reserve comments for a later time except to say that Mayor Joe has finally spoken up. Lets see what comes about.

Well, Well, Well! It looks like the mayor has decided to answer some of his critics or so it appears. After reading and trying to conclude what his accomplishments are, it appears he feels anything done in the “Ville” during his tenure is based on and as a direct result of him holding the office. His response to the first questionnaire is now becoming clearer. He just thinks the voters will buy into his stance…”I don’t need to answer to anyone!"

Some of My accomplishments in the last 4 years while serving as the Mayor of Wellsville have included:
1. Working with the Revitalization Committee to get murals painted on the Flood Wall

RE: Look up the meaning of restoring. The best that can be said was that work has been done, however, THEY are not operational, are they?
5. Worked with the Wellsville Terminal to put in mounds, grass and trees to beautify the property.
RE: A better choice of words, in lieu of beautify, could be more appropriate.
6. Was instrumental in starting WKMXlive.com for High School sports.
RE: Expounding on the word “instrumental” would assist in making an informed decision.
7. Purchased new Christmas decorations through the Pete Amato Foundation and The Wellsville Alumni Association Lip Sync. (I personally participated in a performance to make this a reality, along with the Administration who purchased new Christmas banners.

8. Restored and re-painted all the equipment at the playgrounds in Wellsville, along with putting in a pavilion at the most heavily used playground in Wellsville.

is that word again “restored”. We don’t really need to rehash the “pavilion”, do we?
9. Replaced and/or paved the following streets: Lincoln Ave, 17th Street, 20th Street, Clark Ave., 15th Street, Commerce Street, as well as the alley at 12th Street and Main Street.
RE: Give me a break. Were they projects not completed based on grants? Try to be honest!
10. My Administration has made sure that the Hammond Park facility is kept clean and the grass mowed.

11. Replaced all street signs in the Village.

18. Since I have been Mayor we have purchased a Street Sweeper, 3 new industrial grass cutters, 3 trucks, several thousand dollars worth of tools, all of which helped to bring the Maintenance Department up to standard.

Of all the accomplishments, 18 in total, it would be interesting to know how many were started and completed in the last 12 months. If anyone knows, please comment. Because I believe that the majority, if not all were actually within the 12 month period. The most logical question would be why now? What projects happened during the first 3 years of holding the office?
I'll be back to question the other portions of his statement.
Wiz - Did you see this part in the mayor's statement on the Alumni site? This is copied right off the page:
"I will take credit for organizing all committees that made all of the accomplishments possible. I could not have possibly done them by myself. There is no "I" in team and I have had tremendous team players."
Seems to me he is giving credit where credit is do and not claiming he was the only one acomplishing anything.
Take a ride on Broadway. The last time I was there it appeared most of the fountains are working.
Anonymous…I am sure that no matter how I respond to your comments, I will never succeed in acquiring your agreement with any comment I make. Especially when the subject is about the current mayor. In my opinion, all anyone without bias has to do is read what the mayor wrote and my response to each. His use of words such as ; worked, restoring, seeking, instrumental, purchased, etc. are statement words. Look it up! No matter how he tried to dress it up as an after thought.
Regarding your defense of his accomplishment on the fountains. Take another look at the main fountain, that’s the one in the center that is without water.
In the words of another. Now, I have no further desire to hold a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent. Thanks!
wiz, I have read many of your comments and I have to say that you come across as a pompous ass. For some reason you think you are smarter than everyone who would dare to disagree with you. It doesn't mean you are smarter it just means you have different opinions. Your degrading and snotty little comment about having a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent is actually a rather stupid thing to say and not very clever or original. It seems like you can not have a discussion with someone who disagrees with you without getting mean and nasty. There is no need for you to insult someone like that. But maybe you do have that need to insult people, maybe it makes you feel superior and maybe that is all you have. Maybe you should grow a little, expand your horizons and realize that civilized people can disagree without resorting to personal attacks.

Because you think, that I think, I am smarter is not the issue at all. Maybe, just maybe, it is you who do not agree with the positions I take. In everything I comment on, I try to use facts, not opinions. I might add such as you have done with me, again with the smarter remark, is not a fact, just your thinking. To clarify for you, I was referring to anonymous’ skirting of the issues and providing nothing that could even be debated. Well I would like to expound further on some of your disparaging remarks. Here is something to talk about and get people involved in! The Columbiana County Victims of Homicide and Violent Crimes Support Group! The will be meeting on Saturday, October 13 at the Calcutta Church of the Nazarene. How many unsolved murders need to happen before an investigation of the Investigators begins. Mike Williams, Charlie McKinnon, Tracy Hill, Craig Roberts, and Tonia Amato have unsolved written all over them. Why haven't they been solved? The law enforcement officials have messed up and they haven't been investigated for their slipshod way of doing anything. It is time that a group of familied got together and support each other and get some changes started. Do not let people forget! It could happen to your family next and then how would you feel.
Talk about it and get involved!
I also feel the Mayor is giving credit to others. I do have to say, if he didnt have committees in town to work with, nothing would be accomplished. His council does nothing. They are not involved in any of the projects going on. The Mayor did put at least one committee together that I know of, and has worked with them to accomplish a great deal in the past 3 years. Council has had no involvemnet in that committee or project and they should all be gone and replaced with people who want to move the village forward and actually do something. Also, the Wiz gives me and almost everyone else a headache. The ville is moving forward because of the Mayor and the committees in spite of the do nothing council.
