Memorial Day Ceremony

Thursday - April 8: Wellsville's Memorial Council met Thursday evening at the VFW Post on Main Street. This group of volunteer veterans have been busy for a few months now in preparation of the 2010 Memorial Day Ceremonies. Many of the things most folks don't think about are being taken care of by this group. From their dedication for their desire to honor all that served or who are now serving they spend countless hours taking care of the details. We believe the Memorial Day Ceremony organized by this Council is one of the nicest in the area. Their efforts really pay dividends.

Korean War Veteran Don Brown has been spearheading the Wellsville Ceremony for more years than we can recall. We were young 4th graders when Don first joined the Vets. Don is assisted by a core group of helpers that includes Debbie Koffel, Dale Barnhart, Hootch Shepherd, Todd Farnsworth and Mike Shepherd.

Don Brown advised that the agenda is mostly set with the participants in this year's observance. There are just a couple of spots left for the names to be filled in before the program can be printed.

The Ceremonies will begin at 9 A.M. at the 4th St. Memorial on Monday, May 31. It will be followed by a short parade and conclude with exercises at Springhill Cemetery. We'll have more information later on the line-up.

Flags will be placed on Veteran's graves at Springhill on Saturday, May 8 beginning at 11 A.M. Anyone willing to lend a hand will be welcomed. On Saturday, May 15, the Memorial Council will be conducting a Tag Day in the Village. All donations will be greatly appreciated. Anyone wanting to send a donation in can send them to the VFW Post marked attention to the Memorial Council.

In addition to supporting the Memorial Day Ceremonies donations are used to purchase the flags and they also cover the expense of the cement base for the foot stones for the graves. Uncle Sam donated the foot stones. Wellsville's Memorial Council makes sure they have a solid base to sit on. The Council also pays for the breakfast at the VFW for all participants.

Before closing we would like to wish our good friend Mel Boggs a Very Happy Birthday a little early. Mel is a WWII vet now confined to Adkins in East Liverpool. Mr. Boggs was for many years very active in the VFW and still keeps the organization close to heart. Boggs will be 91 on April 19. God Bless, Mel...
