Open Letter to Jake Lunders

Dear Jake,

You don't know me. I'm just an old guy (BL Class of 65) that's retired and likes to blog. A member of your church, Wellsville's First Christian, first told me of your accident and injuries. Shortly afterwards it was written up in the local papers.

We are terribly saddened with your situation and have made room in our hearts and prayers just for you. From what we've been hearing, reading and seeing we learned that you are a step above many of your peers in attitude, spirit and enthusiasm. We pray not only for your quick recovery but, also, that this bump in the road will not discourage your continuing efforts.

Miracles do happen. You have proven to be a guy with a very positive, up beat attitude. Eric Lowe, the Beaver Local Athletic Director, remarked on the internet this past Friday after the game that you are a leader academically, while playing sports and with your friends and classmates. We hope that you look at this set back as only a temporary one and continually keep your attitude while working with your therapy and recovery.

Although it may be difficult to appreciate at the moment you are a very fortunate young man. The compassionate and overwhelming support of your classmates, friends, your fellow church members, pastor, and the whole community is very impressive.

We stopped by the benefit dinner this past Thursday. Before we even got inside we ran into State Rep. Linda Bolen and family just leaving. Words can't describe what we saw once we got inside. It was elbow to elbow with the people who came to show their support. Rev. Warner told me they planned for 500. By 6:30 that evening they were already approaching 600 meals being served. The folks in the kitchen made a few more trips to the grocery store to resupply and keep feeding all that came in the door.

We took a few pictures posted here of what it looked like. We hope you get to see them. We're sure you'll recognize some of the faces. Before closing we want to say keep the faith. It's been proven that prayer is powerful and can accomplish things some doctors never believe possible. With a combination of therapy, prayers and your positive attitude you can beat this temporary set back. Believe in yourself. It's possible.

We're praying and hoping for God's speed in your recovery.

Very truly yours.
