It's been awhile since we did a "Thoughts" post and there are several things I want to get off my mind before they go fuzzy on me. I'll try to keep it brief.
Automatic Recount Scheduled
The County Election Board surprised us. Originally they said the official results wouldn't be released until the 26th but they moved it up and got it out this past Wednesday. Out of the 286 provisional ballots 68 of them were disqualified. From the remaining Surace picked up 12 more votes and Lloyd an additional 15. That narrowed Surace's margin of victory down to four more votes than Lloyd received and lines that race up for an automatic recount. According to the newspapers that will be done next Wednesday. In other words the Mayor's victory is still not official. It won't be until the recount is completed and the results are announced and certified.
Amato Death Probe
The MJ's Tom Giambroni got in touch with Mr. Grimshaw and reported that Grimshaw hopes to have something ready over the next month. According to the article Grimshaw has asked for some additional testing based on the results he has seen so far. Grimshaw was also reported as saying logistics is a problem since he lives 260 miles away. I'm betting that we won't hear anymore news until after the holidays. Since Mr. Grimshaw is retired I'm sure age and road conditions are a definite factor in making a four or five hour drive just to get here.
Baard Industries
It was reported last week that the folks at Baard are working closely with the Ohio EPA in getting their permit applications ready for the new CTL plant. Although it's a lengthy process getting the permits, it will shorten the time span getting it accomplished by cooperating and consulting with the EPA. Eventually there will be public meetings conducted by the EPA for our input and concerns before the permits are issued. Most companies submit an application and then go back and forth until all the issues are worked out with the EPA. Baard's novel approach to the process is commendable and gives me a feeling that they are indeed an environmentally responsible company.
Wellsville Terminals
In an article in the ER Tuesday it was reported that Chip Muse said they are continuing their efforts with controlling the coal dust pollution caused by drag out from their terminal in the ville. He told Jeremy Lydic that they have winterized the truck wash and are considering paving the road from the truck wash to village streets. That certainly sounds more encouraging then their previous musings. Last year it was reported that freezing temperatures prevented them from using the truck wash.
Police Manual
From last week's council meeting we learned that the police manual for the WPD is being updated. According to Fiscal Officer Dale Davis that will take time with making sure it conforms to federal guidelines and labor laws. We speculated earlier that the lawyers will be busy after the investigation report came out. Davis said the village attorneys are working on it and once it's completed it will have to be voted on and approved by council. Many people wanted to see blood after the report came out and it ain't gonna happen unless something involving gross negligence occurs in the meantime. For the time being it is good to see that cooler heads are prevailing and that steps for corrective action are in the works.
Phyllis Memorial Park
C of C rep Dolly Brophey suggested to the mayor and council that the mini park at Rt. 45 & Wells Ave. be named Phyllis Memorial Park in memory of the late Phyllis Thrasher. I like the idea. Hopefully ODOT won't have a problem with it.
Good Satire
Satire is described as "a literary composition in verse or prose in which human folly and vice are held up to scorn, derision or ridicule". Many comedians employ satire in their routines. It is meant to be funny, to get us to laugh and entertain us. It is intended for us to see the lighter side of events and actions of our fellow men. In this day and age of enlightened political correctness good satire is not meant to be malicious with racial overtones. Just ask Don Imus. In my humble opinion to use those themes is not amusing and displays an immense lack of maturity and quite a bit of selfishness.

Nib, A few of us suggested nameing the park after Phylis when she was still with us. It is a shame it didn't happen then when she could enjoy it. But, I hope it will get done now. God bless her.
I think matt's satire has an evilness to it that makes it weird and not funny.
Opinion,
You are from Wellsville and you can't laugh at what goes on in your little village???
Your kidding right???
HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH
I keep seeing the word "attorny's" (plural) for the village of Wellsville. Is there more than one?
Andy Beech and ??
Everyone should remember that Matt suffers from Abused By A Joe Syndrome. That poor bastard can't even buy a cup of Joe without being tortured by this debilitating illness. I think if anyone really cares about Matt, they will send him to the nearest Abused By A Joe Rehab Center as quickly as possible.
Dale Davis was quoted in the paper as say "the attorneys" are working on the manual. I do not know if that was in error or he was referring to the law firm that did the investigation. Nothing was mentioned by the reporters covering the council meeting. I would think that would require council approval for additional expenditures. We have only one village solicitor which as mentioned is Andy Beech. Maybe someone can clarify this for us.
Yea, we can laugh at what goes on in our place called home but when the attempt at humor is nothing more than pure spite it's not a laughing matter. We have a great sense of humor and often kid one another. However our humor is not intended to be hurtful. As Mr. T would likely say pity the fool that makes fun of us with nothing but contempt. He is full of rage, has serious issues and is sad. That's not funny.
THANKSGIVING AT THE STEWART HOUSE
Matt, would you care for another helping of sour grapes?
Why sure Wiz, I'd love another helping! These are the best sour grapes I've ever had. I'll bet I can eat more sour grapes than you!
Bullshit Matt! Nobody likes sour grapes more than me. I'll out eat anybody when it comes to sour grapes.
Gee Matt, this is the best Thanksgiving ever! Just think, if Dave Lloyd had won that damn election, we wouldn't have all these sour grapes to munch on!
Your right Wiz, we really do have a lot to be thankful for.
Gee Matt, too bad John's not here to enjoy these sour grapes with us.
Where the hell do you think I got em Wiz? John has a whole orchard of sour grapes. An endless supply!
Wow Matt, when you said you had a lot of friends in Wellsville, I didn't realize they were sour grape lovers like us.
That they are my boy, that they are.
Congratulations Joe! And thanks for this bounty of sour grapes on our holiday table. In the name of the father, son, and the holy Joes, Amen.
The End
And you wonder where the Lloyd supporters are? We do not stoop to the depths that you people that claim to support Surace do. I think when you ask where we are and why you hear nothing from us, maybe you should consider that we have accepted our loss and we will move on with our lives. The true Surace is coming out in all of you. Just look at the posts on this forum and Matt's. There are so many lies, half-truths, and threats printed. Kind of like life with Surace at the helm.... The good guys will win in the end, just wait and see. I am no supporter of McClleland and I am certainly no supporter of Surace or Scarabino. Congratulations Joe (s). I hope you can handle the heat coming your way. 'Cause it is going to get hot in the ville.
To :-)
You people have accepted your loss and moved on? It's you folks that keep these sites going. Matt is writing these weird pieces that he thinks are satires, but which are really just racist and stupid. He actually was heard telling a reporter that he considered the race "a fight between good and evil." How weird is that. And he's your main spokesman!
Re:-)....You really sound like you have moved on. As far as I can tell your still trying to threaten people. In one breath you say you have moved on and in the next you say you will win in the end and hope we can handle the heat coming our way. So which is it psycho? Or do you even know? Why don't you just organize a big loser group so you all can meet once a week and cry and make threats and keep the village divided. My mistake, I guess you have done that already. So don't try to move on and do something for the good of our village. Just sit back like you always have and throw stones at the people who do.
I think there is an Abused By A Joe Rehab Center in England. What a perfect location for matt. It will be just like he is in East Liverpool. As mat so cleverly pointed out, these cities look alike. You can tell by all the well cared for historic buildings and cozy little alleys.
YADA, YADA YADA.....
Is it just me or do others feel this way. Matt's story on today is normal stuff, that I once enjoyed reading. But now I don't want to even read it. Then there's wiz with her long heart felt post, again, don't want to read it. There's just too much poison associated with them. Any thoughts?
Don't read it. Do you have to ask why? Stay away from the blog. You have that right, just not the ability.
I agree. The normal thing he posted today almost makes you uncomfortable, because you feel like there is a big slap in the face coming for the ville. Maybe in time, he can get his site back to normal and it wont be the war zone he turned it into. I liked it when others wrote things, poem, stories, etc. and he posted them. Maybe some of those will come back. I think Matts site exhausted everyone for so long, and the insults wore out Matts welcome. We'll have to wait and see what lies beneath.
Do we really care what lies beneath? I think we all know that he will continue to keep bashing Wellsville. What lies beneath is nothing of substance. It is as shallow and hollow as the messages of ridicule and scorn that flow so freely our way. We have come a long way and have just started to bring about a sense of pride and accomplishment here and it will go on regardless of the hate messages that are mercilessly piled on our people and our village. He has no power over anyone or anything that happens here. His rantings have been reduced to pure entertainment value. We have persevered and his pen has turned from a sword into a flacid body part. Let him rave on..we can always use a good laugh.
I'm no Matt fan, heavens knows that. But you folks and your fear of his sudden nice post just feed into whatever power it is he has. I'm thinking that maybe he's gotten bored with the whole Wellsville thing, too, and since his posts are starting to dry up on it, he's just doing something else for a little while. Plus, people were tagging his blog site to the blogspot folks, and maybe he decided to tone it down a little.

Now that is good satire..hats off to Falcon Eddie and Want To Help.
I saw in the Review today that the old Homer Laughlin mansion was torn down so Kent State can have a parking lot. Now that's progress! East Liverpool has the same old uncreative and destructive mind set that has kept it from being a beautiful little river town for tourists. Maybe they will put one of those nice bronze plaques there to mark the spot where they destroyed yet another historic site.
Anonymous:
You are right. They have torn down so many beautiful structures in East Liverpool. I couldnt believe it when they got rid of the Elite Diner. Now getting another parking lot for Liverpool is very progressive thinking. They are really on the way up. Pretty soon, the whole town will be one big parking lot.
Yes, it is hard to beleive they would get rid of that great old diner. Imagine if they had the old hotel by the river, the Elite Diner, the old theaters and the original clock tower. I am lost and amazed as to why they continue to just tear it all down.
I just heard that the old Homer Laughlin building was torn down by order of none other than Mayor Joe Surace of Wellsville. Chief Joe Scarabino was on site and actually swung the wrecking ball a few times.
I heard Kent was considering a "Boy With a Boot" replica to be placed in the center of their new parking lot.
The Elite diner was a raoch infested little trailer, their food was shit.
White Paul:
I heard the same thing. I also heard that this is all being orchestrated by none other than Matt Stewart. You know, aka Trashman, remember that washed up Review Journalist and one time blogger. I wondered what had happened to him. Last I heard, he escaped from the Abused By a Joe Center and was wandering aimlessly thru East End begging for dog biscuits. Guess he got himself back together. Good for him.
I was going to respond, point by point, to some of the comments on here about East Liverpool "getting rid of" the Elite and the former U-Club but what's the point?
You have all read on ORL, if not here, that the CITY did not cause the demise of those buildings...where the hell is the city supposed to hundreds of thousands of dollars to buy and then renovate old buildings when it can't even pay to repair the streets?
It's a general decline in this area...check around; you'll see MANY old (yes, some say historic) buildings that NEED torn down because there is no one willing or able to pay to have them renovated.
And that's not only in ELO but in Wellsville, Toronto, Steubenville, Mingo, many river towns.
Steel is no longer God to these towns along the river, and when it left, so did the money.
Some of these posts on here are so childish it defies reason.
That said, I will respond to this:
[QUOTE: Imagine if they had the old hotel by the river, the Elite Diner, the old theaters and the original clock tower."
They would be sitting there, empty, most days, as are the museums, restaurants and other attractions in the city...there are no people left to patronize them as in the past.
"Those days (jobs) are gone and they ain't comin' back," as the song goes.
If you imagine them still being here you also have to imagine that people were innovative and creative about how to utilize them. One reason these places are gone is because of the we can't do that attitude. Other places do it and so could east Liverpool.
Wheeling, WV has revitalization grant money available for restoration of the Victorian buildings, and some of them are really beautiful right now. East Liverpool needs someone to go after that grant money. There is a building in the Diamond that is beautiful and on sale for only about $55,000, and I think about how great it would be to buy it and put a huge apartment upstairs for myself and rent out the bottom floors, but it would cost $200,000 to make that building right again...and not very many people have that kind of money.
Ole Nib, I heard Baard is a long way off, if they even do build. Do you or can you find out when and if they are building? I sure hope it happens and fast. It's our last hope for this dying town. There's no money, no jobs, no hope.
While everyone was squawking about the mayor and all that, this was on the front page of the Review a week or two ago:
http://reviewonline.com/News/articles.asp?articleID=11103
To answer that Baard question. Sorry, didn't introduce it.
I'd like to know WHO authorized "the attorneys" to revise the police (employee?) manual, what will it cost and where is THAT money coming from?
Has anyone (including reporters) ever asked those questions?
Wouldn't council have had to voted to pay for something like this? Did they? I don't recall ever seeing anything about such a vote.
Or is this another behind-the-scenes deal like the pavilion?
to just wondering,
you wondered to far and got lost, you would think you would like the idea of a police manuel being made up so then the problems in the police dept. will finally be solved,
Nick Dalonzo's got a nice place for kids to hang out, why don't anybody think of that.
Nick does have a nice place for the kids. And my daughter has spent lots of time up there. Eating pizza, playing games. Maybe Nick should capitalize more on that. It isnt downtown, but parents should be glad to take the kids somewhere like Nicks.
Hey I heard that Nick Dalonzo has a myspace page anyone know how to get there?
Yeah, I've seen it. just myspace.com/dalonzos. I'm going up tonight for the Nazerine Church benefit speghetti dinner.6 bucks, all you can eat
Nick does have a nice place we do all our parties there and it is not expensive either, food is excellent and Nick is such a nice person you feel at home there, my kids have been there quite a few times, C-YA soon Nick
