OK, I need some help here. Found this picture on a site called epodunk.com. It is a post card picture of Wellsville High School. I don't ever recall seeing this one. At first I thought of the old McDonald school building but I don't think this and McDonald were the same building. I remember the old McDonald building before it was torn down and replaced. It too had the same kind of fence across the front. Where was this building?
Incidentally, the post card was signed by Rebecca Aughenbaugh. Does anybody know who she might have been?
I just love these mysteries.

Although I am not from the Ville originally, I believe this school was located where McDonald's Hamburger joint currently is.
Never heard of the name of the woman who signed the card.
Either that or the old Garfield on 18th str. But the one your speaking of was named Mckinley.
From talking to some of the people that are older and wiser. That is the old Wellsville High School. It sat on the same lot as McDonald school now sits. There still are some old timers that still remember that building.
The other building where McDonalds restaurant sits was a elementry school. I have other pics of it and the old Acme Sheet metal factory.
My bad it was the American Tin Plate factory
I didn't remember the old McDonald school building having the turret like structures on both sides. Of course that was nearly 50 years ago and I could be wrong. The building pictured must have been the high school before the one was build on Center Street.
From what I've been told the American Tin mill was quite the sprawling complex back in the early 1900s. About the only thing left of it anymore is the building that is home to our American Legion on Wells Ave. That particular building use to be two stories before a fire several years ago. From what I understand it was because of the tin mill, coal & clay mines and potteries that gave Wellsville our cultural diversity.
After seeing this picture, I went to Ebay - Wellsville - all categories and lo and behold there are two postcards there of this school for sale. It is called Wellsville High School (1909).
The reason I thought it was on the site of the existing McDonalds Hamburger joint is because when Pusateris' were excavating for the McDonald's Restaurant they removed huge sandstones that were said to be from the old high school. In addition, if you look on Riverside at a retired Dentist's home (not Ravelle) you will see an old wrought iron fencing. It is my understanding that fencing was a small portion of what was shown in the picture. Again, I am not from here just some things I have heard over the years.
nib...you are really coming up with some interesting topics for your blog. Keep up the good work!
Just my opinion.....
It reminds me of the High School that was built in East Liverpool, where the clock tower is now. I can not imagine what the energy losses were in that type of school construction.
If you would like to post that postcard picture of the tin plate factory, let me know and I will try to figure out a way to get it to you. In fact I have some other pictures of the 'ville that you might want to share with the bloggers.
I am reluctant to give out my e-mail address because of spammers.
The picture is indeed the old high school where the Macdonald School now sits. If anyone has the histroy of wellsville book that may shed some light on this topic and many others about Wellsville history.
