No Flood Wall Needed Right Now

Photo is the Little Yellow "Crik" flowing under the Wells Avenue Bridge in Wellsville. It was taken this morning by yours truly. If you look closely you can see the high water line at the base of the right side. According to the National Weather Service flood stage at New Cumberland is 36 feet and the river crested at 27.9 feet at 7AM this morning. River level at New Cumberland is expected to be at 19.9 feet by tomorrow and will be down more by Monday. Gratefully the folks up on Wells Avenue dodged the bullet this go around. Hopefully we won't need the flood wall this year. I have many memories of that flood wall going up over the years. How about you?

The marker that the fire department reads is actually on the left in this picture. It looks like a yard stick " WHITE with BLACK letters ". I do have many memories of this flood wall and putting it up is alot of work.

The first time I recall watching the fire dept. erect this wall was in the early 1980s, and I was absolutely amazed at the process.
I've seen it done a couple of times since and still am amazed.
I wonder how many of the firefighters today have ever done it, since many of the old timers are now gone or retired?
This is one of the most unique and interesting features of Wellsville, and not something easily found anywhere else in Ohio.

I REMEMBER LIVING UP ABOVE THE FLOOD WALLS ON HIGHLAND AVE AND LOOKING DOWN AT WHAT WAS A ROADSIDE PARK AT THAT TIME AND PEOPLE WERE OUT IN CANOES AND SMALL BOATS, EVERYTHING LIKE SHELTER HOUSES AND BIG OLD MEMORIAL CANONS NOWHERE TO BE SEEN, JUST ONE HUGE LAKE,CUT OFF FROM THE TOWN BY THE FLOODWALLS AND A FIRETRUCK PARKED ON THE SIDE OF THE STREET UP ON OUR HILL.

You wonder how many of todays fireman have ever put the wall up? I would say ever last one of them unless they are new hire's that just started in the last two years. The wall was put up in 2004 and was used, and a test set up was in 2002 I beleive to make sure everything would go smoothly. I love this wall myself and it works great.

Thanks to the Army Corps we have this baby.

RE: The Army Corps of Engineers...Now there is one heck of a union. Membership is voluntary, wages are set in stone (and raised or lowered only by the "union hiearchy) plus 30 days paid vacation per year...all medical provided free of charge. Discounts always available at the "Company Stores." For those truly interested and inclined, a college education may be provided for merely guaranteeing future years of service. If one becomes disenchanted simply retire when terms allow. Partial retirement provided after 20 yrs and full retirement after 30 c0mes with full pay. Gee, why isn't this taught in schools?
