Wellsville Needs Volunteers Saturday

As noted in yesterday's papers there are a couple of clean-up projects going on in the village tomorrow morning. Members of the Wellsville Fire Department are looking for help in clearing brush along the floodwall & levies. The other is the Tree Board's litter clean-up along Village streets and mulching the young trees in Broadway Park.

Fire Chief Bill Smith was quoted in the newspaper article saying that the brush along Wellsville's flood system needs cleaned off in preparation for an inspection next week. Late last fall a crew from the Southern Baptist Convention Disaster Chain Saw Crew was in town to assist the department clearing off trees on the levies in the lower end of town. Fearing erosion has weakened the nearly 70 year old levy system the Chief has arranged for members of the US Army Corp of Engineers to do an inspection. In addition to the concrete flood walls there are earthen levies included. Anyone wishing to help is asked to meet at the Fire Station at 9 A.M. tomorrow morning, May 15. Volunteers are asked to bring gloves, eye protection and suitable foot ware for muddy conditions.

The other clean-up project is the Tree Board's. As Dawn Johnson announced when the Tree Board met with a Village Council Committee, they got a $2,000 Litter Clean-up grant from the Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources to be used on Village streets. Provisions in the grant allow for 10% of that amount to be used to purchase mulch. Volunteers will be given a free tee shirt and be treated to lunch at the First United Methodist Church at 5th & Main St. following the clean-up. Anyone wishing to help with the Tree Board's efforts are asked to meet behind Village Hall at 8:45.

While all this is going on Wellsville's Veterans Memorial Council will be having a tag day from 9 A.M. to noon. Proceeds will help pay for the flags that decorate Main St., the veteran's graves and costs for the annual Memorial Day observance.

Please consider donating a few hours tomorrow morning to lend a hand for these worthwhile projects. It's all a part of what makes Wellsville some place special.
