Wellsville's Friends of The Old Fire Station To Hold Pancake Fund Raiser

Wellsville's Friends of the Old Fire Station will be holding an all you can eat pancake breakfast this coming Saturday morning at the SOI Lodge. It's a fund raiser to help with the maintenance and renovation costs in keeping the old station in good condition.

The menu for the breakfast includes sausage, coffee, tea or milk & juice and all the pancakes you can eat. Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 & under. Breakfast will be served from 7 to 11 AM on Saturday, January 21. The SOI Lodge is located at 327 Main Street.

Bon appetite!

HATS OFF TO WELLSVILLE'S FRIENDS OF THE OLD FIRE STATION FOR PUTTING THIS ON.
PRESERVING THE FIRE STATION TRULY IS WORTHY CAUSE. WOULDN'T IT BE GREAT IF PRESERVATION CAUGHT ON AND OWNERS OF DILAPITATED MAIN STREET BUILDINGS ATTEMPTED TO CLEAN UP THEIR PROPERTY? I HOPE THIS BECOMES CONTAGIOUS AND SPREADS.

Dreamer has the right idea about Main Street properties. Lets hope it starts with the old 5&10.

That would be nice, the current owner works out of town I am told so volunteers who would like access to fix things up have been unable to do so.

How do you mean "fix things up"? Just curious what you have in mind.

If our Mayor and Council and Andy
Beech would enforce the nusiance laws on the books and create any that are needed , and make property owners adhere to them or be fines, we wouldn't have to dream about it becoming contagious. We would have laws and codes that demanded our Village be cleaned up, just like other towns. If we wait around for people to be infected with a bug that wants them to clean up their property, we will be waiting forever.

Here's a potential idea for the constructive use of the old 5 & 10 window space (besides the obvious choice of a mini antique mall like East Liverpool has in the old Smith & Phillips building and yes I Know we already have something similar in the old Perpetual Building): when I was a kid there used to be a garage across the street from the Busy Bee tavern that had two old "gangster" cars in the window. I believe Mr. Sell that used to work on cars had them, and I believe if you drive around one of the back streets in town around 7 or 8th and Washington you'll find them tucked away in an old garage. How about asking him and the 5 & 10 owner for permission to display these 2 classic beauties on Main Street as an attention grabber. It's such a shame to have them just sitting around collecting dust. You do have a really good sandwich place right down the street and a restaurant right up the street that might appreciate an added reason for people to stop in town. I know there will be questions about insurance issues, but what would be the harm in asking. It would sure be better than looking in and seeing more construction materials piled up haphazardly. And I'm not taking anything away from the effort that was made to use it as a pool hall/arcade to give kids some sort of outlet in town. Hats off for that--and to the idea of at least covering the windows with school artwork which at least hid the eyesore for a little while until the tape failed. This isn't the only storefront that needs a little TLC and the message from City Hall and the Chamber of Commerce should be if it isn't going to be open for business, at least please make it presentable. Another idea for decoration is the window display around the corner from Naples Spaghetti House in downtown Steubenville.

I agree with Anonymous about enforcing the codes on run down properties in town. Until someone actually addresses this "elephant in the room" this town is never going to move forward for the better. I know there's been a reluctance in the past by the previous administration to be the "bad guy" in dealing with this issue for fear of losing a few votes come election time, but let's be honest, most of these people don't even live here and the ones who do and don't have any more pride in the place they live in, aren't taking the time to vote anyway.

This issue has been ignored for so long, it's grown to be too big for one person to handle. Mr. Edgell will need assistance and it's obvious the village doesn't have funds to pay for an assistant. I offered to help the last village administrator get the ball rolling but never was taken up on it. My bringing up the problem at a council meeting was viewed evidently as a personal attack and not as constructive criticism as it was intended and subsequently explained.

Look around Toronto or Chester and you won't find the same level of eyesores, and I've got news for you--compliance for the ordinances there isn't all voluntary--there's just something done about it when someone doesn't comply.

I gave a video to council members of the worst looking violations in town two years ago and more than half of those shown are still in the same shape--case in point--the brown house at 9th & Commerce with the exact same trash in back, visible from the street, as there was in the video from two years ago. Owner of record--East Liverpool address. The chimney on the house next to the old West End Bar has now fallen in. What ever happened to the notion of a safety service director? Maybe if some of the old members of council would've taken the time to watch what was provided to them, they still might hold their positions today.

I know with the cold weather it's not the most ideal time to be making progress, but I sincerely hope the new members of council take hold of the reigns and deal with this issue in a timely manner.
