Haugh Makes History In Wellsville

Friday – December 30: There were tears of joy, smiles of hope and hugs galore for well wishes as history was made yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Susan A. Haugh was sworn in as the Village's newest Mayor. Peggy Miller's little girl Susan became the first female ever elected Mayor in the history of Wellsville. According to Wellsville historian Brass Beresford, prior to Mrs. Haugh's election this past November, the highest elected female Wellsville official in the past was a President of Council several years ago. That was when Wellsville was classified as a city. Mayor Haugh is the daughter of Peggy Miller.

Mrs. Haugh was the top vote getter among four candidates running for Wellsville Mayor in the November General Election. Haugh ran as an independent and is the wife of Jeffrey T. Haugh. She is a native of Wellsville and was serving as a member of Village Council at the time of her election.

Columbiana County Sheriff Ray Stone officiated for the swearing in ceremonies that took place at Village Hall Friday afternoon. Also sworn in were newly elected Council members Don Brown, Diane Dinch and John Morrow.. Brown & Dinch have prior Council experience. Morrow is new to the Village political arena. Re-elected Councilman Tony Cataldo was not present at yesterday's swearing in ceremonies.

Councilwoman Rosie Goss was Master of Ceremonies. Canton, Ohio music teacher Sandy Larsuel offered an opening prayer and sang the song “My Grown Up Christmas List”. Mrs. Larsuel is the sister of Councilwoman Goss and was assisted by Bria Larsuel.

Mayor Haugh reported that one of her first goals is to meet with CC Port Authority Tracy Drake to determine how Wellsville can help in developing the Intermodal Park into a more active, prosperous river terminal facility. In the mean time she said she will be setting up the Mayor's office over the holiday week-end in order to be ready for the first day of her new administration when the doors open on Tuesday morning. Tuesday, January 3, will also be the first Council meeting she conducts. That meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 PM at Village Hall. She be able to use that new gavel that was gifted to her in honor of the historic occasion.

The former mayor and council men should have been present to witness the swearing in of our new mayor. To me it appears as bad sportsmanship. I am thankful for the new people in office. No more bickering and petty differences. As Rosie Goss's sister sang, " This is my grown up christmas wish." No more wars, only peace.

I hope council voting won't be 5-1 or 1-5. At least I see the majority council possibly getting along better than the old. I agree, Mayor Joe & other council should have been there. Mayor Joe shows where his heart really is...not here...

I appreciate the encouraging words "anonymous #3". I like the excitement in the air around town and spoke with a couple of people who are ambitious about getting involved in town. Wellsville's future is bright. Thank You for your support.

It is not surprising they were not there. They werent there all the years they held and still hold office. People keep electing Cataldo. Go figure

I believe Tony, although he seems to think everything is funny, brings a great deal of knowledge to the table where municipal government is concerned. If he uses his knowledge to work with the others things will be fine. As for those who didn't attend it's not a surprise. Their candidate of choice wasn't voted in and therefore they can't pull the strings from afar. We can't expect good sportsmanship now now if it was nonexistent when they were in office.

We believe Mr. Cataldo is a very private person when it comes to his public personna. His experience will be an enormous benefit to his fellow Council members as was witnessed tonight at the meeting. We sincerely hope that his spirit of cooperation will be applied to his new term in office. It's is apparent that the voters of this village are looking forward to working toward achieving goals that will benefit all. We think what has gone on in the past should be chalked up as lessons learned. It is time to move on...

"No more bickering and petty differences. "

if you think this will happen, either you are wrong or this is a bunch of "yes men" who got elected. EVERY public body has differences that are aired in public and if they don't then they're making decisions in private, out of the public eye.
NO body should agree all the time on every single issue.
hopefully, there will be some differences of opinion, some heated discussion but always, a spirit of cooperation and fairness among council members and the mayor. that's what village government is all about.

We shall see... It's very early in the year but we aren't foolish enough to think everything is going to be smooth sailing. We do think decisions will be made openly and above board and explanations for those decisions will be readily available to everyone.

There is a difference between disagreeing and point blank causing problems where there aren't any or pitting people against each other and disregarding rules entirely. Even if the the new group makes a few mistakes the community is going to benefit from this leadership.

No doubt there will be mistakes made and there will be differences of opinions with the new administration and Council. No one is perfect. Differences of opinion is only normal with individual thinking. However, we feel, any mistakes made will honestly be corrected without being swept under the rug and differences will be worked out.
