Economic Development/Lender Relations officer Tim Ensch, of the Cleveland office of the US Small Business Association, was the guest speaker. Mr. Ensch spoke on the mission and function of the SBA. The SBA has been a federal agency since 1953. The Cleveland office covers most of northern Ohio covering 28 counties.

Mr. Ensch stated the SBA is not a lending agency but aids in small businesses getting loans from commercial banks. The SBA provides guarantees on those loans and nationwide have guarantees on 30 to 40% of small business loans. The SBA covers loans up to $5 million maximum. Ensch remarked there are two words to bear in mind when applying for loans through the SBA - perseverance and patience. Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream started out in an old gas station in Vermont with help from the SBA. It took them four tries before they landed a loan to start up. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.

The Cleveland office of the SBA is located at 1350 Euclid Avenue in that city. For more information and advice you can call them at 216-522-4180. Mr. Ensch is at Ext. 213 or through e-mail at timothy.ensch@sba.gov. Mr. Ensch is pictured above with Chamber member Sheryl Gibson.
