Wellsville's Highland Heights - c1907

Here's a picture of a post card we been meaning to share with you for some time now. We were holding off, waiting for a scanned copy to be sent. It never happened. While we're killing time for the football to begin we were looking for other pictures.

This card was post marked in 1907. So, the picture is dated sometime before then. It was one of those antique post cards that was printed in Germany.

The bridge in the picture is the one that no longer exists. It was knocked down sometime before the flood wall was built. The only part that is still around is an abutment that the deck of the Pete Amato Board Walk now sits over along Little Yellow Creek. It was before there was a Roadside Park.

This picture was taken long before Route 45 came straight down the hill to intersect with Wells Avenue. Before it was given the designation of Rt. 45 it was called Lisbon Road. At the intersection shown on the post card was the beginning of Lisbon Street in Wellsville, which crossed the bridge and came out behind the Boy-With-The-Boot. That is the only part of that section of Lisbon St. that still exists and it's still a brick pavement.

If you look closely you can see a baseball diamond to the right of Lisbon St. with some boys playing a game. A horse & buggy is nearing the intersection on the road. We've been told the field to the left of the road was used for many years for the annual May Day Celebration complete with a May pole. In later years that field was filled in with waste from the town's potteries. The houses in the background along the hillside are still there. We can recall about six houses beyond the one on the right that were taken out with the expansion of Route 7.

Wonder whatever happened to the May Day Celebrations?

I like this picture and wish there were more of the area of Highland Ave. I remember walking around up there about 15 years ago showing my kids, and noticed the same old brick pavement.

I have a scan of another picture showing the full length of the old bridge. Send me an address and I'll send you a copy
