Yesterday's Papers

It's been a slow week in the ville for news. I guess that is mostly due to it being the end of the month and most of the organizations have all of their meetings out of the way for this month. Seems like our hooligans are behaving themselves or at least laying low. Of course I wonder how much attention is paid to police activity in our fair village. Both of our local papers have police reports just about daily but to me it seems Wellsville is seldom mentioned.

Yesterday's papers were filled with pictures and what little news was available about the bomb threat over in Lisbon Thursday. If I was betting I would put my money on the perpetrator being some jerk that was suppose to be in court over there and was attempting to put it off. Did you catch the Aaron Rudolph picture on the front page of the MJ? I couldn't help but thinking that the Sheriff was saying "Can you hear me now?" into his cell phone as he stood on the Court House steps. Then standing behind him was Lisbon Police officer Mike Abraham. Is it just me or is there anyone else that can see a striking physical resemblance to Curley of the Three Stooges? I've never seen or heard of Officer Abraham and there is no insult intended. It was just a first impression I had before I even read the caption. Seriously though I hope they find the person/s responsible and get him into the justice system quickly. Terroristic threats are no joking matter. Thankfully it was just a hoax and no one got hurt.

Perry Twp. Chief Ray Stone picked up a few more votes to be the Republican candidate for sheriff in November's election in the official vote count. However the difference in vote totals still requires a recount by law to finally determine a winner. In an another Rudolph photo buried on page 12A of the MJ was pictured the ville's Kim Meek looking all official working at her new job at the Election Board. If Chief Stone holds on after the recount he will be facing off with Wellsville's John Soldano.

Zane Carter continues to rack up the honors for his basketball talents. He was named Player of the Year and given a first team position in the ER's All-Review Teams for high school round ballers for this past season. It was a nice write-up. Younger brother Jeremy was breathing down his back for those honors according to Mr. Glavies. Congratulations to all those from WHS that got mentioned and to Coach Thompson for being named Coach of the Year. It was all well deserved in my book. By the way, Zane said he is kicking around either Mount Union or Rio Grande. We had a WHS girl that played for Rio Grande not too many years ago and then, of course, there was Bevo Francis a couple of years before that.

The Alley Cat Aid Brigade got into action this week. With the help of the CC Humane Society it was reported that they set out traps at the old Sterling China for their initial TNR mission. According to their web site it was very successful. We been told that the old Sterling China is a very popular gathering place of the feral felines. They like the shelter that does not have a lot of humans around. If you see any stray cats with one of their ears partially lopped off in the near future you'll see one of the patients that went through the program.

Chamber-of-Commerce member Lucille Huston resigned as secretary at this week's meeting. Lucille use to cover Wellsville before she retired from The Review. No reason was reported for the resignation but I'm guessing she is lining up more time for gardening and her grandchildren. The kids are year round blessings to enjoy and it's fast approaching time to play in the dirt. Enjoy it all and our best wishes go out to Mrs. Huston.

In yesterday's ER there was a multi-extra section titled Focus on Business. It covered various businesses from all over the tri-state area. Five Wellsville businesses and the Chamber-of-Commerce were honored among the many pages. Two of the five that I'm counting have headquarters in East Liverpool but have a very viable presence as entities in town. Those are the Port Authority and Martin-Maclean Funeral Home. The other three were Robert's Funeral Home, Central Federal Bank and the Dairy Queen. Although there are many other businesses in the ville I can't help but think of businesses we no longer have. It's kind of sad but really it's a story that can be applied to communities all over the area. It's been said that the economy runs in cycles. Let's hope we get an up swing in that cycle soon.

Enjoy the bright sunshine today.

Lucille Houston resigning from the Chamber of Commerce is welcome news. Some other dead weight ought to leave also. With BAARD coming in our Chamber needs to quit being a social club having lunch once a month and passing a business of the month plaque around to the 5 places left in town. Diana Spencer has the daunting task of transforming the Chamber into a real entity with a real purpose besides a Christmas Parade. I wish her all the best. It is badly needed, and if anyone can do the job, she can. Progressive thinking and organization our strong suits of hers. It would be really helpful to her if alot of you people who really don't have a reason to be there, went home and the Chamber could function like it should. Maybe even start getting other area chambers to come to our meetings and start working together. I just don't think they will do that to plan a 10 minute parade and eat lunch in a church basement. I know this sounds harsh, but it is the reality. We need to take bold steps to make more needed changes to move the Ville forward. You can't always worry about peoples feelings. The Village has an opportunity. I think we should be ruthless and take it.

opinion..I do not think you are being harsh, just realistic. It is time to move forward and the people who hold you back should move on.

Nib, I agree that many things that happen here are not reported. There are crimes that have been committed and you just don't see it in the papers. People should be made aware of what is going on around them so they can take precautions.

If Lucille was secretary of the chamber while she was covering Wellsville, that was the height of conflict of interest. No reporter covering a town should be part of a group that is constantly in the news (well, SHOULD be in the news, if it's doing more than having soirees for members).

I don't know if she was secretary then. I was not saying she was. But, maybe she was. I am just glad she is gone. The big question is, who will they put in as new secretary?

She was never Secretary, she is a member. Marj Dysert is Secretary.

Chamber Member:
I am just curious. What are your qualifications to be on the Chamber of Commerce. Do you own a business, are you an official, involved in committee to move village forward? Or are you just a resident who joined the Chamber of Commerce without real business ties? I dont expect you to give your name or anything, I am just curious. Also, what as a member, is your function on the Chamber? Also, what does your vision for the Chamber look like, if you think there needs to be changes to the Chamber at all. I would really appreciate if you would answer. Thank you.

Lucille was secretary of a group inside the chamber. Finance committee or something like that.

Yes, I do own a business, I'm not the most active member, becuse of that. I am quite busy to get overly involved. The most recent event for the Chamber, if you recall, was the dinner for Baard Reps. That was a huge sucess, and more like this are in the works.
It would be a lot easier to do a lot more things if we had more money. There is great ideas brought up, and a good many ppl behind those ideas. I think more things would happen if the funds were there. We are trying when we can, beautifying some places, meeting with important members of companies, groups, etc. I hold true to my optmisim, better things will come. These older members we have are the backbone of the group, they've been there, done that. Ya know you could join, and try it out, lend a hand on some things, even if you don't own a business.

About the Chamber, the Board should consist of business leaders, owners or officials.
Associate members are encouraged to join and attend events.
Who is on the Board for the Wellsville Chamber? Does anyone know?

I have to disagree. C of C board members should be anyone who is interested in filling the seat and doing the job. I just have to mention Marge Dysert to prove my point. Mrs Dysert is not a business owner but her dedication to Chamber activities and their mission have been proven for many years. She is a "Tiger" through and through.

Our C of C is hampered with a lack of funds to support a lot of activities they could be sponsoring. In my opinion they would be a lot more aggressive if they could only afford to do so. I think they have a lot of good folks in their membership but unfortunately the pockets of most of the sponsoring corporations and businesses are very shallow. It's the story of our area. Can you say economic hard times boys and girls? Hopefully that is about to change. Time will tell.

No, Matt Stewart does not run this blog. It's all me.

Thank you member for your comments. I have to think about what you said before I comment further. Also, thank you for your participation in the Chamber.

I have really been thinking about your post. I agree, the Chamber needs money to accomplish goals. That is a sad reality. However, I still feel, after much thinking about it, that it needs to stop being a social event and lunch for some of the old timers. I know this is not a popular opinion, but to get the Chamber to really do what a Chamber should, they have to change a mindset that is decades old. For example, why hasn't the Chamber promoted the Flood Wall or other projects in town. They could have contacted the proper authority, as the Chamber for Wellsville, and had the proper signage put on the highway to direct people to the murals. This, in my mind, is the kind of things that the Chamber of Commerce should be doing to promote the Village. It wouldn't cost them any money, just someones time to make the proper calls. There are lots of other things in that vein that they should be doing.

Can you imagine how fast the idiots would destroy that sign on the hiway? They brake the lights at the wall every chance they get. How bout the bashing they'd get on here for trying something like that. Ya see, there's some real a_holes out there.

I am talking about regular signs that you go through the state to get for tourism. Not a handmade sign.

Just what I thought, no comment from the peanut gallery. The Chamber should be promoting the Tree City status, the Pete Amato Boardwalk, Flood Wall Murals, Boy and the Boot Statue, etc. This is what I am talking about. Acting like a real Chamber of Commerce. My gosh, other people made these things happen, perhaps the Chamber could not market and promote them. If they don't know how, they arent really a Chamber of Commerce. This is why people arent interested in the Chamber. Tell me where I am wrong here. I don't know of any exuse, why they are not performing these tasks. They dont cost money, and it would be great for their image, and probably get more people interested in the Chamber. I would love to know. Have they even thought of doing these things? If I were a betting man, I would say no. Because if they thought of it, why wouldnt they do it. Someone on the Chamber, please answer this.

Those little State owned signs cost $800 a year.

Citizen:
If someone from the Chamber contacted a county commissioner, they could get the signs. They would not cost money. The commissioner could probably make the call for them. It doesnt cost the Village money for a tourism sign. Thats a fact.
