Wednesday's Council Meeting

Instead of the first Tuesday of the month Wellsville's council meeting was held on Wednesday because of the elections. From accounts in both of yesterday's news papers it was a tranquil one with no new business brought to the floor. None was reported other than a couple of Fire Department personnel items. In a way that's good to see. It's an indication that our elected officials are following up on items.

Evidently there was a completion clause in the Village Hall roof repair project which is still yet to be completed. It was scheduled to be done by Dec. 16th and some think the contractor is giving us the run around. I don't know if the delays had anything to do with some of our wintry weather but how much you want to bet that the contractor is devoting more time to inside projects that they may have going on? It's not uncommon for some contractors to get your money tied up and start a project only to move onto starting a new project so they won't lose a contract. Then they play around leaving you hanging. I've seen it done more than once with some small home improvement contractors we have in the area.

They reported Jennifer Allen is making a dent in back taxes owed the village with close to $9,000 collected and suspended the driving license of 63 other recalcitrant obligators. She's got another $21 plus grand to work on before starting anew after the 15th of April. I wonder how many of those 63 with a license suspensions even realize they are not driving legal? I know the state doesn't notify them. Does the village? Most time folks don't find out until they try to renew their license or get stopped for a traffic offense. Surprise, surprise...

They have narrowed 22 applicants for the assistant fiscal officer's job down to eight and will be starting to interview those folks. That's the job Kim Meek left to go over to the Election Board. They say they are looking for a "people" person. Kim left a tough act to follow in both job performance and being a heckuva nice person.

Jim Saracco advised that residents have to renew their handicapped permits in person. He must be talking about the parking spaces. The permits are issued by the state. It wasn't reported what proof is needed. Help me out here.

Chief "Smitty" from the Fire Dept. said he is getting busy with properties that need to be demolished in the village. After he gets some legal advice he said he will start condemning some places and notify the owners. They must have got some funding for the project. Smitty said they can tear down six condemned structures at a time. I was wondering, is there a waiting period after the notification is sent to the owners and before the demolition can be done? Also if the notified owners do not respond does the property become village property? I'm not trying to start anything here. I'm just being nibby. That's how I got my name. There are too many neglected places around the village that have fallen into disrepair. I'm glad to see the project getting started.

Not related to the reports on the council meeting I saw a couple of items in this morning's Review I wanted to mention. Tomorrow the St. Francis animal shelter folks are hosting a chilly cook off contest at the SOI. Weather permitting it is a worthy cause. Even if you don't have an entry I think you can stop by and have a bowl. What a great way to warm up a winter day. Judging begins at 5 P.M.

The second item I wanted to mention is that the Crime Watch Committee is holding their regular meeting at Village Hall Monday evening at 7 P.M. In my opinion this is another worthwhile cause that can only benefit our village. We need to support it.

Hopefully by the next council meeting spring will be in the air. Think spring. Think sunshine and warm...

I go to most all council meetings. Anymore, the only councilmen doing anything are Cataldo and Soldano. They always did, now that Dinch is gone, nobody else is doing much. Don Brown seems like he lost interest, is he feeling well. The other councilmen need to start doing something, 2 or 3 can't do it all. Allmon seems to be getting into it, maybe he will be good in time.

youre right. he seems like he is coming along as time passes. honestly though, i would have thought he would be more on the up and up being that he has more time than most to work on things

I agree, Tony C. and Joe S. are very important to council, but Allmon is doing well also so far. Don B. does seem like he has lost interest, the other 2 are dead weight.

I feel either Tony Cataldo or Joe Soldano, would make a good Mayor. We can't take another Mayor like Surace. I hope one of them run for Mayor next time. They both seem honest, and they care about the Ville. Only time will tell. They are both cute too.

It's time we get a young Mayor. Nothing against older people, they are hard workers and the backbone of the Village, but we need a young guy. Cataldo and Soldano are good Councilmen, and would be a good Mayor. Please run Tony or Joey.

You gotta be kidding. Have you seen the village lately? It has been in this condition for YEARS {including the years they have been on council} because of poor leadership and apathy. By the way, just out of curiosity, what planet are you living on?

Anonymous said...

You poor people. Tony and Joe Soldono would be good mayors? And they are cute? You people need to get out of town once in awhile and see what real councilman do for their towns. Good grief.

Name a town where Councilmen don't fight and argue all the time? The only town that does not fight and argue IS Wellsville. That's funny, look at other town's, where Liverpool, yea right. What planet are you on fool, there have been a lot of improvements in the last 5 or 6 years. Tony and Joe are a big part of them. Who else does anything up there? Maybe you can run, I doubt it, sounds like you don't know crap about nothing.

most of you have no idea what council people do behind the scenes.

Anonymous said...

We have a pretty good idea what they do behind the scenes by looking at the town and seeing how the laws are never enforced.

Anonymous said...

council legislates and appropriates. nothing more nothing else.

I went down Soldano's street a few weeks ago and my front end almost hit bottom when I hit a pothole. You must not know where he lives, because the street is not new. It has not been paved for years.

Anonymous said...

You must be talking about Lincoln Ave. Soldano does not live on Lincoln ave, or any other street that has been newly paved.

peas&carrots

GetReal....are you for real?

Council does not enforce law.

Just a note on Tony Cataldo. I asked him last year when they dedicated the flood wall, why he didn't attend. He said he had to clean his apartment. That is how much they care about what is going on in town. I guess all the councilmen had to clean their apartments that day, because not one of them was at that gathering. What great support they show for the village, and groups who ARE doing something.

Now that Tom Edgell is not working at the Election Board, Wellsville Council needs to bring him back. All of Council, and Surace know that Saracco is not doing his job. He is so phony, and they know it. He can't do any better, he just doesn't have it. Council can remove him without Surace's approval. He is holding back the Village. He gets worse day by day. Edgell was 100 times better than Saracco. Please get Tom back, get rid of dead weight. You will see the difference in no time.

Anonymous said...

Amen, you are so right. Bring Edgell back, Saracco is the biggest joke this town has seen in a long time. Get him out of there guys, then he can spend all day at CF Bank. He was barely getting by as Zoning boy. Ask the people who served on Zoning for years, they will tell you what a joke he is. Do everybody a favor Saracco, resign!

Anonymous said...

Note to Surace. Saracco is bringing you down my friend. He is awful at the job, and you know it. You say you want to bring people together and work for the Village. Well as long as Saracco is there forget about it. Everyone I talk to at Village Hall knows he is worthless Surace, and so do you. You will never get the trust of the people if you keep this man around. In his time in office, all he has to tell people is excuse, after excuse, after excuse, Enough of this, we want services. Make a move before it's too late.

Go back to Clover Alley Saracco, and stay there.

Why in the H*ll would Thom want to come back and work in this Village. We had to fight to keep him here in the first place. I would be the first to fight to get him back, but why would he even consider it? He was the best thing to happen to us in a good while.

Opinion

You must be under the opinion that council people just sit at home waiting to be invited to public events. There are plenty of times that council people are not invited like the mayor is, nor are they informed of the event until the last minute. You must remember that council people have lives just like everyone else. They have jobs to go to, or businesses to run, children or grandchildren who might have an event they must attend, families to take care of, homes to take care of, friends to be with, so on and so forth. Some members have had some health issues. Maybe if council members made $20k a year instead of $2,400 a year, they would be at all "public" events. You act as if no council member supports civic groups at all. When these groups approach council and requests permission to close a road off to hold a public event in the streets, they always grant permission, this is called SUPPORT! Not putting a stop to the Tag Days that everyone complains about, that is called SUPPORT! Every action they take during a meeting is to either SUPPORT or PROTECT the citizens of Wellsville.

Anonymous said...

Well, I happen to know that the counci people were invited to that event. You can exuse them if you want, but I don't care how much they are paid, they should be at some of these events. I have a job, and family, sickness, etc. and I can still find time to support the Village with time, money and resources. If this council made 20K a year, they would still be hilljacks, without a clue how to move this village forward and sitting at meetings saying "nothing at this time, Mayor". They are overpaid now. If they had some council people who were enthusiastic and a good example, they could call on the good people of the Village to join them in their efforts. This is sadly not the case, and you know it. It sure isn't council who is spending any time on the projects that are going on. Your argument sucks. Try again. Obviously you are on council. There is no other explaination for your whinning.

Oh, I forgot. Council really looks stupid by not stopping the Tag Days aka. begging barrels. It is not safe for several reasons, and it shows no pride to have every kid in town at one time or another on the standing literally in the middle of the street, begging for money. Have a bake sale or something. Yeah, council really does a great thing by not stopping that. People wont even come to Wellsville on Sat. because they don't want to be hit up at every corner. And if they are protecting, then why do they let these people stand right in the middle of the street. What assholes. How in the world, do you defend that council? That is the mind set you have on council. Give us services, not beggers.

The only reason that tag days are held, is because groups such as Veterans, Wellsville School Sports, and many others, depend on them for the survival of their group. Sure some people get mad at tag days, but for the most part people don't mind giving a dollar or so to these needy groups. If you don't want to give don't, I have never heard of anybody being fined or beat up or anything for not giving. Have a heart, this is the way it is, these groups need tag days, and have for many years. By the way, Council has nothing to do with tag days. They don't make the rules on them either.

Anonymous said...

The groups should have good sense and keep little kids out of the street. Other than that I think tag days are okay.

Isn't there an ordinance on tag days?

ole nib

C'mon Ole Nib, don't be a lame duck. You live here, you run this blog. You should know that tag days are approved by the Mayor and Council.

Anonymous said...

No ordinance, not to my knowledge.

opinion...I think you are right but it is so engrained in Wellsville culture, you will never change the mind-set. They don't see anything wrong with begging in the street. They would rather have the kids in the street begging than helping them with a fund-raiser. They don't really care about the kids or they would try to teach them the value of working for something you want or need. It is good for the community to have different events and good for the kids to learn how to come up with different ideas and work together. Does the school endorse begging ? Bottom line is that everyone is to lazy to do the right thing for the kids and the administration can never make the hard decisions, even when it is for the greater good. My kids have never been allowed to gather around the begging barrel and I know other parents who let their kids do it but are really against it. The village needs to launch some sort of pride campaign and begging in the streets should be the first thing to go!
