Dear Santa

One of our commenters on an earlier post said that they wished we had a decent grocery store in ville. They remarked that Save-a-Lot was cold, dirty and didn't have much to offer. After reading that I stopped in there the other day. Of course I had a winter coat on but I didn't notice it being exceptionally cold. What I did notice was the store was pretty dingy in appearance. The ceiling and floor tile are probably the same ones from when that place was built and opened as Wellsville IGA. The lighting isn't so great. All together it makes for a dull, boring shopping experience. Although most of their merchandise is generic off brands that many haven't heard of, the store serves its' purpose. However, except for an urgent last minute item needed right away, there isn't much to entice me to shop there on a regular basis. Even with off brands I've never noticed much of a price difference with what can be found elsewhere. It's a hometown store and I like to support hometown businesses but when it comes to groceries I prefer my name brands. Call me a snob if you want.

That being said I thought it would be interesting to get a wish list started for things we would like to see in the ville, things that would entice us to spend our shopping dollars in town. This is purely a dream list. There are many things I would like to see that my practical side says we just don't have the market to support. However getting into the Christmas season we'll let the folks with the fat wallets consider the practical side.

I'll start the wish list, a sort of "Dear Santa" letter. Please feel free to add on. You never know who's reading our letters.

Since it has already been mentioned I too would like to see a "full service" grocery store opened here - one with fresh cut meats, fresh baked goods and deli items. Preferably it would be one of the chain stores that has the wherewithal to keep prices competitive with the Wal-Marts, etc. and can afford to keep the doors open in lean times. Giant Eagle, Riesbecks, Kroger - it makes no difference. If the prices where just as good or even a little less why would you want to drive to Calcutta?

I would like to see a full service gas station reopen in town - one you can get not only oil and gas but needed minor mechanical work done in one stop. One you could get your oil checked and wiper blades replaced if needed. I know we have a few good auto shops in town but none of them offer both mechanics and the ability to get gas in the same spot.

I would like to see a new car dealership open in the village - one that offers a full line of cars and trucks.

I would like to see a decent restaurant that offers good, home cooked food that isn't prepackaged and prepared in a microwave, thrown on a grill, or dropped in hot grease. It would have to be one where you can have a cocktail or two while you wait for your dinner to get ready. Again I'm using the phrase "full service" but I would like to see an eating establishment with a full service menu that offers fine dining or just some good home cooked grub.

I would like to see a good taxi company in the village - one that doesn't force you to be crammed into a cab with total strangers sitting hip to hip. You call a cab. It's yours and the driver's until you get to your destination.

I would like to see a municipal swimming pool right downtown in the village proper - one with kiddie pools and a big pool with diving boards and water slides. Hammond Park is nice but it ain't within easy walking distance. There's a lot of kids that would practically live there during the summer months and there are a lot of us older kids that would appreciate having a place to take a dip once in awhile.

I would like to see the Revitalization Committee find the funding to have a Riverside boardwalk complete with benches built from 3rd to 12th St. Wouldn't that be a wonderful addition to such a beautiful, scenic area? Even the occasional passing train wouldn't detract from that.

Finally, and this is more a regional thing, I would love to see a public transit or bus service in the area. It would be one that would start in Wellsville, swing out through Calcutta, back to East Liverpool, cross over to Chester and take Route 2 to Newell, stopping at Homer Laughlin and Mountaineer, on down to Weirton, cross over to Steubenville up around the mall area and come down the hill taking Route 7 to Toronto and back to Wellsville. It would have to be 24/7 service and have four or five buses so there would be a regular time schedule. It could even have one bus going one way and another going the other. In spite of my run on sentence wouldn't that be nice to have?

Dear Santa, I promise to be good. See what ya can do...

Dear Ole Nib and Santa, I would like an old fashioned christmas where people were friendlier and cheerful, and kids are kids laughing and smiling....also i would like a hardware store come in so i wouldn't have to drive to Lowes to get what i need to finish my house.......

I would like to have a really nice grocery store, an antique mall, because I have always thought the antique mall in Liverpool is what keeps that down-town alive. A train car restored into a restaurant, Appalachian art museum,(you could have 3 or 4 train cars with the restaurant, art museum, etc) Wellsville should be the first to get a boat that ferries people to Mountineer. A collective factory owned by the citizens of Wellsville. (utilize abandoned building) Now is the time to have a toy factory! Harness local money, talent, skills, volunteers etc. We could do all of this and more.

Anonymous said...

Someone shake Ole Nib I think he's having a dream.

I have to disagree with you all about Save-a-Lot. It has a nice selection of goods, albeit not name brands, and if you've shopped at Giant Eagle in Calcutta lately, I don't know how you could possibly say the prices are competitive.
GE's prices are sky high compared to SAL or WalMart, although they do have the best fresh produce, lunch meat and baked goods.
SAL has the best meat around, except for perhaps Beresford's.
It would be wonderful to see the kinds of stores you wish for, but it seems that is a thing of the past for river towns.
Salem is growing like a weed and I just don't understand the difference between it and East Liverpool, why ELO just can't seem to thrive.

gotta say hats off to the wellsville road crew today great job .... you guys got out and jumped on it ... and ill thank you for it ....good job guys

Anonymous said...

guess what everyone???? Wellsville boys basketball team did it again...They Won....WAY TO GO TIGERS KEEP UP THE WINNING STREAK....YOU ARE DOING A FANTASTIC JOB COACHES

Anonymous said...

How about one of those buses that look like old trolly cars. You could use it to take people to Mountineer. It would be hard to have a boat because of the r-r tracks. Transportation to Mountineer could be a very profitable business.

Anonymous said...

Wellsville shouldn't the be the one to finsnace a ferry with all of its expenses. If Mountaineer wants a ferry, then Mountaineer should finance it. They are making billions of dollars over there...and a ferry would make them even more money. And since the river belongs to West Virginia they can put some video slot machines on the ferry and make money during the trip.

Anonymous said...

And I know a great place for an antique mall or a bed and breakfast! Or maybe a combination of both! I'm surprised someone hasn't snapped up the Yost house for those purposes. It's beautiful and it's on sale for not very much money, and even though there was a tragedy there, my mom always said that it's the live people, not the dead ones, who will hurt you.

Anonymous said...

How much are they asking for the Yost house? It would make a good antique place.

Anonymous said...

I think a ferry is an excellent idea and I think that the old Wilson's Landing would be an ideal place for it. You don't have to walk across the tracks there. With the build up at Mountaineer I would bet it would get well used. It would eliminate the hassle of driving up or down WV Rt.2. The village can't afford to get into something like that but it's a great opportunity for someone in the private sector. It would be a win win for the ville plus a bonus for Mountaineer.

Anonymous said...

The last I saw the Yost house was listed for $79 grand. It surprised me and if someone would want to turn it into a B&B I'm guessing that the Immaculate Conception Church would be open for a deal on using their parking lot.

Anonymous said...

There is a ferry on rt.7 close to Marrietta. I can't remember the name of the town but that might be a good place to start getting information.

Anonymous said...

Wellsville had a really nice grocery store---Russell's on Second Street. The prices were competative with every major grocery store chain. Why they went out of buisness I dont know, but I wouldnt be surprised if it was because people drove right by on their way to Wal Mart.

In the last few years we have lost a nice grocery store, a hardware , an auto parts store, and a full service gas station .

We got what we deserve.

FLY OHIO IS THE NAME OF THE LITTLE TOWN WITH THE FERRY BUT I DONT BELIEVE IT GETS USED MUCH ANYMORE,, YEA I KINDA LIKE THE IDEA OF A FERRY BE PRETTY COOL .. AND DIFFERENT TO THE AREA

Anonymous said...

to anonymous 503 what store did you visit on second street cause the one i went to was very overpriced they never had anything i wanted and the workers were not that friendly at all they acted like they did not want to be there... alot of those other stores went out of business because you could get stuff cheaper out of town like going to autozone... dont forget we used to have a furniture store a jewelry store a car dealership alot of things so dont say we lost them a few years ago we started losingthese things when people started losing their jobs from the steel mill and you know it. we also had 2 potteries ..... the sad thing about this town is that when people try anything new they protest it and then they get everybody in an uproar .....so until we change our attitudes wellsville will be going downhill

Anonymous said...

about peoples attitudes for example a ferry going over to the mountaineer people will protest about it will stink up the community with the fuel it takes....stupid right.....the B&B it will bring in the unwanted out of towners ...again stupid.... people in wellsville only want to see the bad things in every situation....

Anonymous said...

I remember that ferry on 7. It seems to me that you ring a bell and they come down and take you accross the river. If someone or even a few people invested in something like that I think it would bring people to our village.

Anonymous said...

To weneedto change - I think attitudes are changing in the ville and I think things are looking up. After the doom & gloom that blanketed the area with Crucible closing its' doors I believe that many are beginning to realize that this village is a viable community with promise and a good prospect. In the past few years we have seen developements - Broadway Park, the floodwall murals and the Pete Amato boardwalk to name a few - that we can take pride in. They may be small things but they are a definite plus for our hometown. It gives hints of more good things to come.

Anonymous said...

Ole Nib, I agree and I think that there are many people now who want something more and who are willing to work for it instead of sitting back and complaining. I give our Mayor much credit for nurturing an exchange of ideas and creating a community of committees that are dedicated to progress in Wellsville. He could end up being the Mayor who has had the greatest impact on this village and one who will be remembered for years to come.

A skateboard park for the kids would be a nice thing.

weed need to change ; i do not agree with you about Russells's grocery store. I found the employees to be very freindly ; Jim ( the owner ) was frequenty in the store and always made a point to say Hello, they had a great deli with hot foods, and most items were no ore than what one would pay at Giant Eagle. Of course G.E. can be expensive , but like most stores , you will find some things less expensive than others. My shopping experience at Russells was great and I always patronize local buisnesses.

I do agree with you regarding people driving to Auto zone because it's less expensive. But if every person's goal is only to shop at the least expensive store , all we will be left with is Wal Mart.

Many years past, J.C. Lawson , owner of Lawson's 5 & Dime made a comment to me. He had decorated his store, ordered lots of new merchandise for Christmas , and stood at the door watching the bus carrying shoppers to East Liverpool. It's seems to be a natutral tendecy for people to think they are going to get a "better deal" out of town. Sometimes that is true , and sometimes not. I recently purchased a water filtration unit at Rite Aid , and it was exactly the same price as Wal Mart. Even if it had been a few dollars more , I dont feel it would be worth the cost of gasoline and the wear and tear on my car to drive to Calcutta , just to save a couple dollars. Unfortunately ,many people dont think that way. They will drive to Lowe's in Steubenville to buy a furnace filter.

Hey Ole Nib, if you consider Dalonzos still in Wellsville, I cant get enough of the Chicken Primavera Nick puts together. Or better yet, he has a Jack Daniels sauce chicken dish that is unmatched. I see Nick quite often and your comments about the home cooked grub is what he's about. Have you seen his slogan,"Dalonzos, your home away from home cookin" He makes all his sauces homemade and the pizza dough is made homemade everyday, try the hommade breadsticks, mamamia.
I think you should try his wings with homemade hot sauce too. Well I'm sure Nick will like to hear my comments, and no he's not paying me. Don't forget, have a cocktail while your there.

I like you always patronize local businesses, I go to the A&M where they have the best breakfasts and the best green pepper soup around but they are only open till 3 the waitresses are nice but there is one that is gone that I miss, she treated everyone really nice and she always teased everyone and really was glad to see you there. Dalonzos has the best spaghetti and Nick is spectacular, the pizza is great too. Whenever i am there he always takes the time to talk to you and he really cares about people, however there are stores in wellsville that i do no go to, or the bars, it would be nice to see businesses coming in that is not a conglomerate and that is owned by hometown people those are the places that i would go to. where everything is on a personal level and not on a business leverl

FYI..went to Save-A Lot toget some waxed paper and guess what? They didn't have it! Thank God for The Dollar Store.

Anonymous said...

Who the hell uses waxed paper anymore and for what?? I can't even imagine why a store WOULD carry it...and I don't mean this in a snotty way. I really can't imagine what one uses it for with the advent of plastic baggies, aluminum foil, non-stick spray, etc.
Enlighten me, please!

Anonymous said...

Wondering:
Wax paper is great for a lot of things, especially this time of year.
If you put a piece of wax paper down and then the flour and put your pie crust on it to roll, you will have very little cleanup on your countertop.
It is also very useful for when you're baking lots of cookies. It keeps the cookies from sticking to each other if you put a piece of waxed paper between the layers.
I also use it when I'm separating hamburgers before I freeze them. I make the patties and put a piece of waxed paper between each piece before I put them in the freezer bags. That way, when I go get a couple of burgers, they don't stick together like they do with plastic wrap and they don't get freezer burn like they do with foil.
Waxed paper is also great to put over food when you're microwaving it, because plastic is toxic when it melts. Waxed paper doesn't melt.
And if you want some more uses, just google it. I did and I found this great site:
http://www.rd.com/content/extraordinary-uses-for-wax-paper/

I can't believe I'm up at 1:40 a.m. extolling the virtues of waxed paper. Insomnia sucks.

Anonymous said...

Any store that calls itself a grocery store should have wax paper. Sav-A-Lot doesn't carry anything that exotic. I'd be surprised if they had other exotic items like: salt and pepper or catsup and mustard.

The property on ninth street where the old pottery was would be a great place for a municipal pool.

I am happy that the mind set is changing somewhat in the Village. Projects like the floodwall and the boardwalk are huge and they happened because the committe started it, but people in the Village came out in full force to support it. I think that is the beginning of real change. Complainers should keep it to themselves if they arent going to jump in and join in the change.

Anonymous said...

I use wax paper. It has multiple uses one of which is keeping things separated in those plastic bags or tin foil that was mentioned. Put a layer of wax paper between the stuff and it don't come out one big clump. That way if you freeze something it is easily separated if you only want one or two pieces taken out of the outer wrapping. Geezzz, I feel like Heloise!

Nick Dalonzo is a good man. He's struggling to survive up there on the hill. They have good food, and Nick will make sure that you get treated right, support WELLSVILLE businesses, before long we'll be left with nothing.

Anonymous said...

Wow, that's quite off subject, there. And you must not know Nick like I do. Haven't you heard what kind of things go on up there?

Anonymous said...

Nick Dalonzo said, I don't have a google account. To 856, I'd like to know what your refering to. I host an array of things up on the hill. B Day parties for the kids, class reunions, numerous benefit fundraisers, one last week for the Nazarene Church. Athletic fundraisers, fire Dept fundraisers, benefit auctions, Potter Players Plays, ladies card clubs, but they don't use real money. Lions Club meetings, Democratic meetings, the list goes on and on.
Please tell me your refering to a big techno music fest, because that's the only thing I can think of that might be questionable. By the way, my last and final one was last Feburary. They seem to last too late in the night and are quite loud, not to mention a lack of parking. The last party, for Valentines day drew in about 600 people. so there will be no more. I had a Pittsburgh music promoter put these on. Heck, they even brought in a DJ from England to spin records for 2 hrs, then he flew back to England. This promoter brought his own security team of about 6 guys and 4 gals to put it on. Every person entering went through a search and pat down. I, myself had 3 of my own bouncers also. Let me say this, these groups of people that attended never caused a lick of trouble. If I had to hand pick a large crowd for any event, these people would be it. They came from all over just to support the DJ's.They loved the space the old school had to offer.
I could go on and on, but won't. I do take offens to your comment though. I am indeed a struggling business owner in this town we call home. I would not jepordize my business or my reputation for the almighty buck. I have to stop here, work is calling, the Chamber of Commerce is having there Christmas Dinner party up on the hill tonight. If you get a chance, stop up, I'd be glad to cook my heart out for ya.
Ps. thank you to the other nice comments left earlier, that's why I try. Nick D.

Anonymous said...

Nick, I can't believe you won't host another one of those parties just because they "last too long" and are "too loud."
Any event that brings 600 people into the area is worth doing again, especially if, as you say, there was no trouble.
You know what they say: If the music is too loud, you're too old.
I have no idea what kind of party it was but if you don't want them in Wellsville, send the info to ELO or St. Clair Township because surely SOMEONE in our area is willing to host an event that attracts that many potential tourists!

9:o5.... i heard the same rumor as you about the open drug use there and people flying in from all over to attend this thing, and it was not just one person who said it. i just find it hard to swallow that people would fly in from england to DJ a party at a small business in a small town without the knowledge of it being something more than a "techno fest". besides, arent raves a real big thing in the UK and Europe? I will give Nick the benefit of the doubt though because i wasnt there. could be heresay could be truth. Im hoping it isnt true because hosting something like that at your place of business and the place you make your living is definitely on a downward spiral

Sometimes, it takes a child to remind us of what is really important.
We must always remember who we are, where we came from and, most
importantly, how we feel about others. The clothes on your back or the car
that you drive or the house that you live in does not define you at all; it
is how you treat your fellow man that identifies who you are. Going to
church just to go doesn 't make you a Christian no more than by standing in
your garage makes you a car

I dont think I know of anyone more generous in this town, than Nick. You should all be ashamed. You dont really know what happened in Nicks personal life, and it is none of your business. It certainly isnt fodder for this blog. I dare say, that you who are slandering Nick have been helped at some time to his generosity, and I would bet my arm, he does more than any of you who are throwing the stones for his fellow man. His marriage is off limits for discussion. Do you people ever think, maybe Little Nick could read this garbage you are spewing. I dont think any of you would be happy if you were the subject of speculation. Grow up.

opinion..well said and very true. Nick is as generous as the day is long. He is certainly more honorable than the gutless wonders who have slandered him.

I spoke with Nick yesterday, needless to say he's devistated by some of this garbage on here. Nib, I think it's time for log-ins, put an email address with the comments. This kind of libelous crap about a man who does nothing but try to help his fellow neighbors in this little village of ours. I hold high regard for Nick, and for Nick's whole family. They're some good people.
One other thing Nick shared with me. That party last Feb was the last one he's hosting. Hosting being the key word. He rented the space to a promoter, who put the party on. There was no trouble or any thing, but Nick chose not to have anymore. I kinda wish he would, because it was a blast, but he won't have it. That says alot, when you think of the money that was made. Happy Holidays to yall,T.C.

Nick is a good person, I have worked with him on many projects and know of many other things he has done that I had nothing to do with. If you don't want to eat at Nicks, dont. But, you are throwing speculation out about Nicks personal life, and that is wrong. Maybe we should all make up some things about you and post them all over here as fact. As a former employee of Nick's, it makes me sick to see what you ignorant, malicious people have to say about him. He has done nothing but try to make Wellsville a better place to live. And as for his restaurant, he has put his entire life into it. Nothing makes him happier than to see people happy with the food he serves. Honestly, people need to own up to their animosity and post a name. Finally, leave his personal life out of this. It makes me sick to hear all of this hostility towards a genuinely nice man looking to make our lives better.

I would like to see the boardwalk by 45 connected to the trail that runs in the back of 45. I would also like to see a marathon directed there. The views are superb and it would be quite a challenge to go up 45 and 39 then through town hell why not make it an ultra, I would be glad to be the race diertor.

How about a nice artsy coffee house. Where they used to have that dive of a bar, oh what was it called, Coyote Ugly or something? WEll that place would make a great coffee house and you could display art from town and maybe have local bands perform and a book club. Neat. I love coffee. It would definately have to be great coffee though to keep in competition with starbucks in case they decide to move in to Calcutta.

I would like to see the boardwalk connected to the nice trails behind 45. It makes for a great run but having to run up 45 is kinda dangerous and it would make things easier if the boardwalk led to the trail. They should also host marathon that goes up 39 and down Russell Heights.

the comments about the save a lot store I would like to say it may be an older store but the people are friendly and I have never had any problem with the service if you ask for something they will try to get it for you, and if you are not satisfied with that then maybe you should go to wal mart where you stand in lines for ever and there prices are going sky high and have you ever tried to talk to some of there employees not so friendly
