2010 WHS All-Class Reunion Opening In The Square

Wednesday - June 30: Prior to the Lip Sync performance we were on hand for the official reunion opening in the 4th Street Square. Two class mates from the WHS Class of '55 got it started. The Honorable Mayor Joseph Surace welcomed every one to the 2010 Reunion edition and the Rev. William Betteridge offered the invocation.

A surprise visit & performance for the opening entertainment was the world renown Sgro Brothers. Shown with the Mayor in the lower left corner of the collage above is Tony, WHS Class of '52, with the cigar and Dominic, WHS Class of '50. They came down from Elmira, NY, to join in the festivities and volunteered to do a set playing their harmonicas accompanied by the Generations Band.

Born and raised in Wellsville, the Sgro brothers started performing in the 1950s. They performed early on as The Marine Corps Own Harmaniacs while serving in the U.S. Marines. After their discharge in 1955 they recorded for RCA in New York City. Over the years they performed with Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and once did a command performance for the Queen of England. They have played Vegas, appeared at Nashville's Grand Ole Opry and on the old Ed Sullivan television Variety Show to just name a few spots.

To this day they never forget Wellsville. The Sgros went to Weirton last Thursday to play at the Lou Holtz/Ohio Valley Hall-of-Fame induction ceremony. Both Dom & Tony were made members of that Hall in 2006. They again entertained Wellsville alumni before the big dinner last Saturday with the Generations Band. The Sgros own a restaurant/night club in Elmira and still perform there on most Friday & Saturdays.

Also shown in the collage are some of the members of the WHS Alumni Activities Committee being introduced to the audience. We wouldn't dare start naming names. Not everyone was there Wednesday evening and we wouldn't want to miss anyone. They are all special people with their dedication and hard work.

We apologize for the quality of the pictures. That sun was brutal on a cloudless afternoon. We tried our best but even our photo touch-up program couldn't offer much help. Incidentally, you can left click on any of our pictures to enlarge for a better look. Right click if you want to print anything.
