WHS Tigers Outnumbered At McDonald

Tuesday - February 2: We didn't make the trip. It was probably a good thing. We would probably still be a guest at the Mahoning County Jail! We talked about the lop sided officiating the Ladies faced the night before up there. This was worse, much worse. It reminded us of a NYC mugging - lots of innocent by-standers and no one called the police.

From listening to the game it was apparent that McDonald put eight people on the floor. Three of them had striped shirts on. It started out in the first quarter with one WHS Sports Station announcer stating the base line referee hadn't made one single call. He must have been blind or mute or both. That same announcer stated more than once that the officiating was a disgrace to the OHSAA.

In spite of being out numbered we were hopeful. The Tigers took a ten point lead into the locker room at the half with a 34 - 24 score. The newspaper reported McDonald appeared to be beaten at the end of the first half. They were missing foul shots and "numerous lay-ups". The Tigers had a commanding lead with 23 rebounds to only 10 for the host team. One announcer said McDonald looked tired. By the end of three it was all tied up at 42. Then it just got to be too much in the fourth. The McDonald Eight outscored the Tigers 16 - 5 in that last frame making the final Blue Devils 58 - Wellsville 47. It's the second loss to McDonald this year and the Blue Devils are not the better team. Earlier in the season the Tigers dropped a two point loss to them in the last few seconds of that game.

Mike Johnston led the Wellsville scorers with with 13 points. Jeremy Carter had a double-double with 10 points & 10 rebounds and Jalen DeSarro had 11 rebounds and six points. Johnston, Nunzio Lombardozzi & Jordan Dalrymple each had one three pointer. The Reserves lost 41 - 34 to McDonald with Tiger Chad Elliott hitting 17 points.

Even playing at McDonald that should never have happened. We have to agree. The officiating was a disgrace. The McDonald coach was observed patting one of the refs on the rear end several times as if saying "good game". If Bug Thompson had tried that, besides getting a technical, he would probably have been sitting out the rest of the game in the locker room.

The Tigers return to action this Friday night at Jackson Milton. Last Friday's game against Sebring has been reschedule for Feb 23. We haven't heard when last night's cancelled game against Southern Local will be played. Both of those games were cancelled because of weather. They are both home games.

The Tigers will probably meet McDonald for a third time this year in the District Tournaments. On a neutral floor you'll see a different result.
