Notes From Last Week

When I wrote up last week's Council Meeting I missed reporting that part of the Mayor's Report was to get authorization to sign an application for the controversial Gateway Project. The application for the $20,000 ODOT grant is for a landscaping project between Rt. 7 & the 3rd St. off-ramp around the kiln. The grant is intended to make that area a mini-park with benches, shrubs & such. This morning's papers said it was "to enter an agreement" with ODOT for the grant. It's controversial because the former members of the Tree Board voted to table the application for this until sometime next year. There were serious, legitimate questions about just how much can be accomplished with that amount of money for what they want to do in that location. Seems someone at Village Hall is pushing for the application despite questions about costs. The motion authorizing the Mayor to apply was made by Councilman Tony Cataldo and seconded by Randy Allmon and was passed by all.

The Viet Nam Memorial Moving Wall was in EL's Thompson Park this past week-end. We'll have more on it later but I wanted to mention that for many of us it was a heart wrenching occasion just seeing it with the thousands of names. For a lot of folks in my generation some of those names were personal acquaintances.

Giant Eagle announced last week that their pharmacy will be giving out free antibiotics for prescriptions for 10 different drugs. In a Pittsburgh Trib-Review article a company spokesman said they are figuring with this and the $4 generic drug program they will get enough new business to pay for the program. A nurse that works in a free health clinic in a big city not far from here told me they give their patients a list of all the $4 drugs and free antibiotics for them to take to their personal physicians. It's to see if they can substitute some of their long term medications with ones on the list to save some money on their costs. In today's economy it's not a bad idea.

There will be a county wide waste collection to be held once again this year according to Tom Giambroni in a MJ article yesterday. It's to be held Sept. 12 from 9 - noon in the CC Court House parking lot on the south side of the building. It's open to all county residents and is a good time to safely dispose of all kinds of hazardous wastes. The list of acceptable items include oil based paints, paint thinners, stains, solvents, aerosols, driveway sealers, pool chemicals, antifreeze, transmission fluid, oven cleaners, pesticides, household batteries, wood preservatives & fluorescent light bulbs. The collection is being underwritten by WTI. EL City hospital is swapping new digital thermometers for old mercury ones.

There's still time to get some chances on the jerseys that are being raffled off to raise funds for the football team. There's four left and one more winner will be drawn at half time of this week's varsity game against Lisbon. The #58-Jack Lambert jersey is gone. See or call Nick DaLonzo or Anthony Lombardozzi to get your chances.

The WHS Varsity football team is now 2 - 0 with a narrow victory over the Red Knights at Toronto last week. With five Tiger fumbles is was shaky. Wonder if anyone on the team had to do a "Willie Parker" carrying around a football all week when he had fumbleitis? Game time Friday night against the Blue Devils is 7:30. Good luck Tigers.

Speaking of fumbling.... We went up to the opening ceremonies at Thompson Park last Friday and rushed home to hear the last half of the game on wkmxlive. It was off the air. One of the announcers explained to me that something came unplugged and they were unaware of it. With head phones on they can't hear the cell phones. By the time they got plugged back in I gave up.

Wanted to say congratulations and "job well done" to WPD Chief Joe Scarabino for the presentation he made to Council at last week's meeting. He told us he had been working on that with the Village Fiscal Officer. It was a well documented and researched presentation all with precise figures. As noted in earlier reports Joe had a convincing case.

Don't forget the Robert's Family "Evening of Entertainment" they are sponsoring for the benefit of Vickie McCombs this coming Saturday at the SOI. For $5 you get to taste Marlene Corbisello's sauce with a spaghetti dinner & all the fixings. Then later on for $10 you can get your groove on with the Route 45 Band. There will be door prizes, a Chinese Auction, raffles and much more. Tickets are available at Robert's Funeral Home. Dinners start at 4 and the band takes the stage at 8. Billy guarantees you will thoroughly enjoy it.

September 18 at the high school from 4 - 7 p.m. the girl's volleyball team will be holding another spaghetti dinner to raise funds to support the team. It's $6 for adults & $3 for children. That's the night of the Southern Local football game. It's at home.

Got word they are getting started on lining up another Alumni All-Star Lip Sync for later on this fall. Right now they are just in the planning stages. It's been a while. I'm looking forward to it.

My understanding of Gateway Projects is that only trees can be planted. I didn't think a park could be established with this funding.
St. Clair Twp. had a gateway project in calcutta in the triangle area bordered by Dresden Avenue and SR 11, only trees, no park, benches, etc.
Maybe I'm wrong but that was what I thought. And didn't think there was ever plans for a park at the kiln area where this gateway project is to go

I'm not sure either. That's just what I was told a few months ago when I asked what the Gateway Project was. Maybe my source of info had visions of grandeur.

I was told Nunzio said months ago, he would not help with this project. Dawn knows if he does not help, it won't get done, case closed. She has no workers that can handle a project like this, she ran them off.

That does not seem like a good area for a park. Too much traffic
