Carnival Returns

After years in hibernation the Wellsville Firemen's Carnival is back at a new location. This use to be an annual event at the 13th Street ball park but that location was lost when they built the new high school. Now they are at the practice field behind the football stadium along Danbury.

The carnival runs through Saturday with entertainment, food, games of chance and lots of rides for the young ones. On Saturday there will be a parade from 3rd Street starting at 4 P.M. that will go to the carnival site. There will be a Cornhole Tournament starting at six tonight and at six on Saturday they will have the Fireman's Challenge and a Tug-o-War & Bucket Brigade. There's something for kids of all ages and the proceeds go to support the activities of the VFD.

Pictured here are some scenes from yesterday's activities. You can click on any of them to enlarge. Perhaps someone you know is in one of them.

Nice pics ole Nib. GOt an email from a man in Michigan tonight. We are going to open a video rental store within the radio station buidling in town here. SO that we can keep the doors open and offer more radio/internet programming for everyone. and give wellsville something that they dont have to leave town and goto calcutta for...Anyway This person asked if I could turn the camera in the window back to the street for toorrows parade. THat got me thinking..weather permitting. I mihgt jsut film the parade and put it over the internet for people out of town to see instead of a window cam.. So lets keep our fingers crossed that the weather guy is wrong..

Hey good luck with both the store and today's weather. Hope you can get the parade on. From what I can see on the weather maps this morning it looks like the storms and rain will be moving out of here in ample time for this afternoon's parade.

Am I remembering incorrectly, or did they used to hold the Fireman's Carnival on the 4th Street Square and part of Riverside? I can remember a carnival there, but am not clear about who sponsered it.

Parade was nice, glad they took it all the way through town. What was up with the four dollar firemen fries, a little expensive like the rest of the carnival. Other than that it was a nice first year event, hopefully they can build on that and make it better.

I just wanted to take a minute to congratulate the Wellsvillle Volunteer Fire Department on their carnival and parade. I know what goes into planning and running an event like this. You guys did a great job in doing both. We all remember growing up going to the carnival and having fun. You brought back memories for a lot of us. I thought the parade was great also, I was honored to ride in it. I also enjoyed looking at all the kids faces getting candy thrown at them. To all who planned, set up, and worked both, the carnival and parade, great job, you brought joy to Wellsville residents, and showed us what teamwork can do. So set back, take a break, and start planning for next year and years to come. Keep us proud guys, I salute you.

I think the festival password is remembering might be the St. Rocco Festival. Can't recall when it ended but seems like it was held in the 1980s.

St. Rocco was held at the 13th St. ballfield, as was the Firemens carnival. When the new high school was built, they had to find other places to hold their events. I do think St. Rocco did end in the 80's. The firemen did have one in the mid 90,s in the field now housing the Dollar Store.

It was a nice Fireman's Carnival. A place that you can take kids to and no BEER being sold. Good Job Fireman.

I Guess I should have been a little more specific. There was a carnival held at the Fourth Street Square back in the 60's. I just can't remember who sponsered it. I knew it wasn't St. Rocco's. I thought maybe it was the Fireman's Carnival. Can anyone remember?

Maybe thats why I didn't see alot of cops around, no beer for sale!

Red-on-the-head - I couldn't let your comment on Butcher get on for obvious reasons. However, if it's true it should not be sweep under the rug. That's like sitting on a powder keg.
