This Year's Legends

The Riverside Reunion will be here before you know it. Below is a note from Hootch2:

"I just wanted to announce the Wellsville Legends for 2008 who will be honored at the Wellsville Riverside Reunion. If you'd like to put this on a different thread feel free. Being honored on July 3rd will be, Robert "Brassy" Beresford, Nunzio Lombardozzi, Marjorie Dysert, Jim & Phyllis Thrasher, and The Checkler Brothers. Johnny, Jimmy, Albert, Nance, and Nick. We'd like everyone to come out and thank these people who have worked hard all their lives to make this a better place to live. It'll be a great day in Wellsville when we have them all together to pay tribute. You can go to www.theriversidereunion.com for more details on the weekends festivities."

Thanks for the heads up Hootch. I'm looking forward to it.

I don't understand the Brassy Beresford choice, but I will be there to support the others.

Snookered - I have to disagree with ya there. I think Brassy is an excellent choice to be one of the ones honored. Just off the top of my head I recall he was a one time Wellsville cop, a deputy sheriff and County Sheriff for many years prior to his retirement. He had a distinguished law enforcement career and always made the ville his home. Today, along with his wife, he is very active with the Wellsville Historical Society. Just look at the WWII Living History exhibit they held this past week-end. Because of the Beresford efforts the ville got a lot of good press for that event. I'm sure there are many other things that Brassy is involved with that I don't know about. Maybe others can fill us in. I'm not a personal friend but I have known him for years. I think Brassy is great choice.

One of the funniest stories I ever heard was back in the days when Brassy was a WPD cop. In the wee hours of the mourning he got a call of a brawl going on at the old Pop's tavern in the lower end of Wellsville. By the time the police arrived they had seemingly settled down but it was in the air that they were just waiting for the police to leave so they could get back to slugging it out. Nobody was pointing fingers and there were too many to put them all in a squad car. So Brassy got them all lined up on Main Street, marched them up to the old police department at 5th & Main and let them sleep it off in cells until the next morning. There wasn't any more fighting that night and no one got charged. That was told to me by one of the fellows that had to do that march. Can you imagine about 20 drunks trying to keep in step going up the street in the middle of the night?

Now can anyone tell me which of the Checkler brothers had the barbershop/sporting goods store in the corner of the square. I know it wasn't Johnny. My dad bought my first baseball glove for me there.

I appreciate your feelings about Brassy, but he has done a very dishonorable thing to my family which colors my picture of him completely. He should not be running the museum, and soon people will know why.

Congratulations to Marge and Nunzio! These are 2 people who truly deserve the title of Wellsville legend. I have to agree with snookered about Mr. Beresford. I don't get it. I do however, applaud the two great choices of nunzio and marge. I think they represent what a Wellsville legend is and should be.

That would be Jimmy Checkler.

curious2,

Ole nib,

My father told me the barber on 4th and Main St. was Jim Checkler and he sold hunting/sporting supplies from his shop. Hope this was helpful.
GO BRASSY!!!!

I don't get the Checkler brothers or Brassy, but hey, I'm not the one who is making those decisions. I agree that marge D. and Nunzio L. are great choices. I was hopeing they would choose Edgar. He is a true Wellsville character.

I too was hoping Edgar would make the cut. His life's story is a treasure trove of tales. I found him interesting when I got him to talk with me. Sometimes you have to separate fact from fiction. He once told me he never sleeps! I think he had a twinkle in his eye when I challenged him on that. To be honored as a "Legend" would be a highlight for him. Maybe next year...

We'll be adding a feature to our Web Site to allow people to submit their choices for Wellsville Legends. In the meantime, to get the award established, the Riverside Reunion Committee has been selecting the recipients. I said before, don't be surprised to see Edgar honored as a Legend.

I cant help but think when you mention Brassy's distinguished law career, that it would be great if he followed the law, since is an expert at it. Legend going down. My experience with him has been that he has held himself above the law, and will be soon causeing a law suit for the museum, which they can ill afford. I also feel sure, he has not let his board know that this is coming. Real legend in his own mind. We'll see.

To all of you that are showing disrespect or distent to bassy. Why? He is a good man that I respect alot. I have only lived in Wellsville for about 13 years and I even know about the story of the suppossed dishonorable thing he has done, it sounds like you don't have a leg to stand on or a change of making you case. From my understanding of this person that is going around making accusations and calling foul against other individuals. You need to count the people behind you, I can say with certainty more people think alot higher of bassy than they do of you. Sounds like you burnt alot of bridges and this looks to be your last one, an the sparks are starting smolder more and more.

I know of the story also. Lawsuit-what a joke. The accuser doesn't have a leg to stand on. Go back and look at records, I'm sure they have some at the museum they would be more than happy to share when they need to. The last poster was correct-almost all the town would stand behind Mr. Beresford. I have known him for about 20 years and not one time has he acted above the law or better than anyone else. Sounds like this "lady" better get her facts straight before making accusations-especially ones she can't stand behind legally. Go Brassy,I'll be there to cheer you on and so will half the town.

Could someone please tell me what they are talking about with the Brassy thing? From what I heard so far I get the feeling it's a case of sour grapes on someone's part. So far I haven't heard anything to change my opinion of Brassy. That would take some convincing. What's the story here?

If i might intervene..everyone is not going to agree with the choices that have been made now or probably 10 years from now. wellsville is to small a place for that. One person's saint is another person's sinner..that is life. I think both parties and friends of the parties involved believe they are justified and could go on forever.
My advice..let it be. Being a legend involves more than this single issue, it is the totality of a life.
