WHS Lady Tigers Basketball Season Is Over

Thursday - February 25: Falling to the McDonald Lady Blue Devils in Round 2 of the Hubbard Div. IV Sectional Tournament this past Thursday evening closed the book on the Lady Tiger's 2009 - 2010 basketball season. Although the 76 - 63 loss to McDonald dashed the hopes for many of us it was an exciting season watching this group of gutsy Ladies fight adversity all year long. They started the season with just 12 players. Two of them left the team over the holidays and that left only 10 determined young ladies to finish out the season. There was only one player from the Senior Class. There were only two returning letter winners from last season. The balance of the team was short on experience, numbers and a lot times at a height disadvantage.

Over the season we saw a team greatly improve over how they were playing in December to finish the schedule as serious contenders. Early in the season the turn overs almost out numbered the points they put on the board. It was exciting to watch them transform from that to see some pretty nifty ball handling. We saw a group that was mostly timid in the beginning turn into an aggressive in your face team. We saw some leaders emerge that encouraged their team mates to do their best. We saw a team of girls develop into a group of athletes.

Stand tall Ladies. Wellsville is very proud of you and finishing the season with a 9 & 13 record is nothing to be ashamed of with all you had to endure this year. Each and everyone of you are winners. You hung in there through 22 games with grace and determination. You made your coaches look good. The only losers were the girls that didn't go out for the team.

Thanks for a great season. Hopefully next season you'll have some help with more players. We're certainly looking forward to see all nine of you back next season. We would like to see Sarah back too but... From our vantage point any WHS opponents are in trouble when they face off against Wellsville's Lady Tigers.
