Welcome PPCT To The Ville

This afternoon the Wellsville Chamber of Commerce welcomed the Pottery Players Community Theater (PPCT) as a new business to the ville. The PPCT was formerly located in East Liverpool but have recently taken up residence in the old Nazarene church building on 15th Street. ELO's loss is our gain as this enthusiastic group of thespians brings a touch of culture to the ville.

This is the same group that a while back was given the old Liberty Theater on Main Street. However that building is far from ready for occupancy. They are hoping that eventually they can raise enough money to refurbish the old Liberty and get it ready to move in. They told me they expect that will take some time and in the mean time their home base will be in the historic church building on 15th.

Their next performance will be January 16,17,23 & 24 at Dalonzo's Pizza with dinner at 7 P.M. and the show at 8 P.M. The play they will be performing is called Forbidden Broadway which one web site called Off-Broadway's longest running musical comedy. It "debuted 25 years ago and is constantly updated, pokes good-natured fun at such Broadway hits as Spamalot, Doubt, Jersey Boys and Wicked" according to that site. The PPCT will also be offering matinee performances of this play Sunday afternoons, January 18 & 25, at the church at 2 P.M.

In addition to their performance of Forbidden Broadway they will be holding auditions at the church this coming Sunday and Monday for their next show. The next one is the female version of the Odd Couple and auditions will begin at 6 P.M. Here's your chance to get on stage.

When asked if they would be keeping the name PPCT I was told that eventually they are considering a change with holding some sort of contest with audience participation to come up with a new name.

Anyone wanting any additional information on the upcoming play, auditions, donations or anything pertaining to the PPCT can call 330-532-5540.

Pictured above cutting the ribbon is PPCT member Mary Morse. Standing from the left is C of C members Cheryl Gibson and Vickie McCombs. Next to Vickie is PPCT member Rich Coburn, C of C member Dolly Brophey, PPCT member Cheryle Pierce, and C of C members Connie Bauer & Randy Allmon.

Please join me in welcoming these nice people to the ville.

Come on, this is getting sicking. Since when is a theater group a business. I have seen it all now. Anything to get in a picture. It's really getting old now. The papers need to put a stop to it.

OK , obviously i haven't been to church for a long time, but what happened to Pastor Dirk Hall and the congregation?

They moved down the street to the corner of 17th & Maple to bigger facilities.

This is great news; Potters Playhouse moved from East Liverpool to Wellsville. Theater groups are business. Support your Chamber of Commerce and grow up!! It is not about a picture, it is about announcing to the public "Wellsville's has entertainment". I will purchase tickets and attend the plays. C of C please continue to support any group of individuals or any individual who invest in Wellsville. There are some intellects still in the Village!

Perhaps they could at least "ACT" like they are working on the Liberty.

PPCT has been a member of Wellsville Chamber of Commerce for a couple of years now as we have been anticipating our move to Wellsville. The Chamber has businesses, church groups, and other non-profit groups such as ourselves. The Wellsville Chamber does a lot to promote community growth in Wellsville and we are very appreciative of their continued support. Hope to see a lot of new faces join our group! We can use anybody...have you ever thought of being onstage? Would you like to learn how to work backstage or with lights? Can you paint or sew? We have jobs for anyone and everyone! Give us a call and we'll be glad to get you started!!

Someone stole my thunder! The first commenter on this piece bothered me but I held back responding because I didn't want to come off as petty as they seem to be.

The entertainment industry has long been considered a business. Think about it and get your head out of your posterior. Although this group is small in number their goals are to be commended. We are fortunate they have decided to locate in the ville. On the business end their first performances in the ville is dinner/theater at Dalonzos. Even though I believe the PPCT folks are volunteering their time the planned event at Nick's place is not a charity event. I don't know what the tab will be for dinner and the show will be but you won't be able to attend just by showing up with your hands out. That my pall casting negative friend is what they call doing business.

The picture with the C of C welcoming them to the ville has nothing to do with getting their mugs shown on here or in the papers eventually. You think those members of the Chamber wanted to go out on a cold windy day just to get their picture taken? Like the commenter above said "Grow up". Those members of the Chamber were taking time out of their day to get some publicity for this new addition to the ville's step-by-step process of moving forward. If you can't see or understand this then you are so full of sour grapes you need to gargle with vinegar to get that taste out of your mouth.

Also, to the person that made the snide remark about acting that they are at least working on the Liberty, there is no acting to it. When asked they, the PPCT members, were very up front and sincere in telling me that their mission is to hopefully raise enough money to finish the renovations on the Liberty. It's going to take some big bucks to get that building up to code and presentable before it can be reopened as a theater. You only need to peek in the front doors to see there is much to be done. That's the main reason the BOE declined the invitation to take ownership of that building. The PPCT members realize this and because of their dedication have taken on the challenge to some day accomplish that goal. That my friend is a positive step forward for the ville. There is no pretense about it. It's a mission that simply because of available funds is going to take some time.

I fully support this group and hope that many do. I plan to be there on the 16th and hope it's SRO. See you there.

Mary got a few words in while I was writing my last comment. Thanks for joining us Mary.

There you go folks. There's something for everyone. Once again the number is 330-532-5540.

Bet some of those Alumni All Stars would make a welcome addition.

In case you do not know this Master Thespian, NO one gets paid at PPCT. It is a volunteer organization. Most people pay out of their own pocket to perform plays. They give a place for children to act in this area. If you have not been inside the Liberty Theatre in a while, then you have no idea how much work has been done there. I bet if you called PPCT they would gladly let you volunteer to help.

As for what happened to Dirk Hall's church, when Rev. Rudder moved New Life Ministries to main st. adjoined to the Harvest House Dirk moved his church to New Life Ministries old location.

We at PCCT are not professional actors. We are a small community theatre supporting what we love, the art of acting.

We don't have a lot of money. In addition to usual operating expenses (electric, phone, heat) we pay royalties on all our productions. They can be very expensive. You add in scripts, set design, props and costumes and the price of a ticket doesn't cover it. We need money. Simple enough. That is where you come in. We need someone that can write grants. We are actors, not grant writers. If you know of anyone who would be willing to help us, please send them our way.

Our first show at 417 15th Street was our children's Christmas show. We had about 25 children. Ages ranging from 5 to 17 from all over the area. They need to have the theatre experience. This is their chance to learn and grow. If you are involved with theatre you know the benefits. We have seen shy children come out of their shells and gain much needed confidence. They get their chance to be anything they dream they can be. They build friendships that cross over school boundaries. Also, to simply have fun.

We moved to Wellsville so we can grow as a group. And with your help, we can get the Liberty Theatre up and running for the community of Wellsville.

For anyone interested, the tickets for the DaLonzo's shows are $15.00 ea. and the Sunday matinees are $8.00 adults and $7.00 seniors/students. This show is rated PG- not recommended for small children.

Looks like a bunch of outta towners have come to suckle on the Wellsville Teet. I'm sure the Thespians at Wellsville High School will appreciate the competition from a bunch of Blue Blooded 40 somethings outta East Liverpool and their $15 tickets to a show that's not suitable for all audiences. "Sorry gang, We can't take the bus trip to New York to see a show this year like we had hoped, We just couldn't sell enough tickets." I say we got Trouble, right here in river city, that starts with a capital T and that rhymes with P and that stands for Potters Players! Hey Nick, make my pizza to go!

Anonymous said...

So the $15.00 is the cost of the show and a meal right? If that's the case, that's a great bargain. Do we choose what we want to eat or is it a buffet style? Either way, still a great price for a dinner out and a show. Count me and the Hubby in, and keep up the good work. I, for one, am glad you're in our little village.

I had the privelage of going to one of these shows when they were at the old Dalonzos on the Hill. I truly enjoyed myself, usually not being able to make this type of thing due to my work schedule. I will be taking a vacation day or two to catch the next shows.
Thank you PPCT and welcome to the 'Ville.

It's kinda ironic that the post before this one is titled, "Warmth in the Ville". When once again a (hopefully)small group of people try to convey a different message. I recently met Mary & her group and I can say first hand that they are very nice, dedicated and hard working people. When I first proposed starting the Riverside Reunion 3 years ago. The immediate response I got was, "What in the world would you want to do that for?" Shortly after, an old friend named John Springer came up to me and said, "You'll encounter many obstacles in your quest. Go around them." That little piece of advise has served me well. I think about it every time I face adversity or negativity. And that's the advise I would pass on to the Potter Players. Welcome to Wellsville!

First of all, I hope that (whether they change the name or not), that this BUSINESS will bring culture, popularity, and some BUSINESS back, to not only Wellsville, but to the Ohio Valley, especially in these economic hardships. It is great to see people trying to bring something very nice back here.

Secondly, everyone has their own opinion, but let’s face it, the members of the PPCT are VOLUNTEERS, and put in their own time, (even on the holidays), and money into this. Please, quit griping and crying about something nice that good people are trying to do for the betterment of YOUR society.

Third, people from all over the valley are involved in the PPCT, they are not just from Liverpool. Really, and truly, the name shouldn't even make a lot of difference. This BUSINESS will go towards the betterment of the COMMUNTIY, because it is a COMMUNITY THEATER.

Fourth, Master Thespian, maybe they are having trouble working on the Liberty because they just moved into a new place and are still trying to gain support from citizens, unlike you, who desire some new BUSINESSES in the 'Ville. The PPCT probably needs money, plain and simple. They are a BUSINESS. Hopefully even you know that a BUSINESS needs money to function.

And Lastly, I fully support the PPCT and hope that this BUSINESS will thrive in Wellsville so that it can bring in new people from all over the valley, bring in culture, and help the economic situation in our area. Every single BUSINESS will help our community.

Thank you PPCT for bringing something new to Wellsville, I fully support your business, and thank you to those who also support this wonderful organization. For those who don't, grow up and stop feeding your own insecurities through griping and complaining about something that might, no, WILL be great. C'mon FORBIDDEN BROADWAY!!!

Just so you all know, I am a member of the PPCT and I live in the Wellsville District. I pay taxes to your school and I don't have any kids in your school. We came her to be closer to the Liberty. We want to bring the Liberty Theatre back to Wellsville. Some want to change our name to Liberty Players Community Theatre to show are committment to the Wellsville area and the Liberty. Since our Move most of the members have been supportintg the local restuarants in the Wellsville area. I hardly ever see anyone in Pizza Hut and Dalonzo's. I know I go to McDonald's alot more now than I did before. There are some that write here that we are a bad thing for Wellsville before they even give us a chance. Come see what we do then form a opinion.

I agree, there will always be adversities. But you can't let the "What are you doing that for..." crowd discourage you. Nothing worth while is ever easy. You can't make wine without a few sour grapes! Personally, I can't wait to see a show! Good Luck you guys, and don't give up!

A theater group will be a very positive influence for the village. Many impoverished towns have successfully used art and culture as a way to rebuild when they were hit by heavy economic loses. Who knows, maybe the Potter players will be a springboard for other creative endeavors. I know you will have a lot of support from many, many people.

Welcome to the ville, PPCT, the name doesnt matter, I know you'll bring something new to our struggling town....

Anonymous said...

I agree with Anonymous.

I dont think the people that put negative posts on here understand how a business works. You can't just get the best you want as soon as you open, and especially if you need money...the PPCT needs money to build up to their main goal: the Liberty. How does anyone expect these volunteers to get the Liberty right now in its best shape? People need to think before they speak.

Anonymous said...

PPCT members, you are doing something great for Wellsville, keep up the good work!! Those sourpusses just want to complain....

Anonymous said...

Well, there sure seems to be a difference of opinions on this site.Potter Players Community Theatre is all about community, history and the betterment of the area. This area was once the pottery capital of the world, potteries were everywhere along the Ohio River and surrounding areas, hence the history. It has nothing to do with bleeding blue or orange! We are all people and we bleed red! Hopefully this little theatre group will grow in our town! If I could write grants I'd help out asap! Maybe we should step up and say " What can I do to help?" I know I will!

Hey Master Theaspian, if you want i can get you into the liberty to show you how delapidated it has became and all the work that needs done. besides it not being in it's best state, it would help ppct enomously if people would stop braking into liberty. currently there is not heat, permanent lights, water, or really anything that any normal building should have. also incase you haven't noticed have you seen anywhere to actually park in wellville close to the liberty?? sure the street would work okay for a little while, but how many cars do you think would fit along the road, especially with the bars and other businesses around?? feel free to call and see if they will let you in to look around and i'm sure once you get around the portable stage, and through all the dirt, oh and the occasional cat that has died in there, b/c of the big whole about the stage, i'm sure you will see the string of work lights, and christmas stuff from the city, and old props left. anytime you want to start cleaning it out, i'm sure someone will be more than thrilled to let you.

I can't wait to see the transformation the PPCT has pulled off to make a theater inside the church...though I feel sad that the church closed, I am glad to see that another building has not gone to waste and become vacant....I also cannot wait to see FORBIDDEN BROADWAY.. but I haven't quite decided if I should see it at DaLonzo's or at the church......OR BOTH!!! Any advice??

It depends on whether you want a night out with dinner or not. We went to the last dinner theater they had up at Nick's new place and it was very nice. The choice is yours though, they'll be glad you came either way.

Anonymous said...

I just have to say that the ticket prices for the dinner and a show are a great bargain!!
