Primary Not Needed

News came out today from Tom Giambroni that one ville petetioner for one of the two council seats to be decided this year was disqualified by the Election Board. There were only three petitions filed for those seats and now with one being thrown out the need for a primary election is negated. There are no levy issues to vote on in May in Wellsville.

Rosie Goss was the only incumbent to file for re-election. According to the newspapers she had 54 signatures and three of those were disqualified for various reasons. That left her with the 50 that are required but one of those was additionally disqualified for a nick name being used by one signer that is not derived from her given name. According to Giambroni that's an election law. According to that law if someone is named Thomas and signed a petition as Tom that is a recognizable nick name and is allowable. Heck, I didn't even know Babe's real name is Angela!

The other two petitioners are both former councilmen. There is Demorcrat Jack Cataldo and Republican Bob Marcin. With no other opposition they both advance to the November General Election. Goss can still get on the November ballot if she decides to run as an independent. She can also run as a write-in. I was unable to contact Rosie today for her thoughts. We'll have to wait and see what develops.

Personally speaking I got the opinion that Ms. Goss is not easilly intimidated and stands up for what she believes is right. I like that kind of diversity on council. I hope she does run as an independent.

I am not so sure that she can run as an Independent. You might want to check with the Board of Elections. Giambroni might have jumped the gun with his article, before he checked.

Not to change the subject but after checking out a web site with all of Columbiana County requests for the stimulus monies I noticed that Wellsville is missing from the many requests. Columbiana, Lisbon, Leetonia ect. all have their hands out for some project(s). I guess the ville does not need anything ! ?? Streets, sidewalks,Hammond Park, fire dept.

I am curious why someone would run again when the people have already shown they did not want them by voting someone else in. Do they need the little bit of money they get that badly. It can't be because they want to do something great for Wellsville, they have already had plenty of opportunity to do something...anything. Can someone enlighten me?

Independent candidates do not appear on the primary ballot. They only show up on the November general election ballot. The filing deadline for independents is May 4 and that's ample time to get a new petition. Any registered voter of legal age is eligible to run as an independent. All you have to do is pick up a petition, get the signatures & have it filed by the deadline.

On the Stimulus requests - The mayor put in requests for something in the neighborhood of $13 million dollars for various projects for the ville. I saw the letter he sent to Rep. Bolan and he assured me he put his requests listed in that letter on the web site that was created for that purpose. Why they are not appearing is a mystery to me too.

I try to go to all of the Wellsville Council Meetings, I have gone to meetings on and off for the last 20 years. From what I have seen, there are only 2 people maybe 3 on the current Council, that do worthwhile things to help the Village. I see the other members simply going through the motions, but not supporting any good things for the Village. In todays times, you can't have 2 or 3 people doing all the work. I do not know any Councilmember well, just know them to see them, but I am a good judge of people,I ASK THE RESIDENTS OF WELLSVILLE TO COME TO MEETINGS WHEN YOU CAN, COME AND JUDGE FOR YOURSELF. WE VOTE THEM IN, AND WE VOTE THEM OUT, BUT SEE FOR YOURSELF WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT, JUST READING ABOUT THE MEETINGS IN THE PAPER IS NOT GOOD. SOMETIME THE ARTICLE IS WRONG, OR IT DOES NOT COVER ALL THE BUSINESS. IN CLOSING, WE CAN ELECT 2 COUNCIL MEMBERS IN NOV. PLEASE TAKE TIME TO CHECK OUT THE CURRENT COUNCIL, PLEASE, WELLSVILLE CAN BE A LOT BETTER PLACE IF MORE PEOPLE CARED WHO THEIR VILLAGE LEADERS ARE.

Sorry Nib, but what the mayor says and what the mayor does is usually two different things.

If we get 13 Million does that mean pavilions on every block? Maybe just a 13 million dollar pavilion.Watch who gets these contracts.

What pisses me off, is these Cowards who are a Democrat, or Republican, but will run as an Independent. All that is, is a way to get out of running against an opponent in the primary. If you want to run do it like the true candidates do, that just shows the voters that you are scared to run. I like these people who say, " WELL I JUST DECIDED TO RUN AND IT WAS TOO LATE SO I WILL RUN AS AN INDEPENDENT". That's nothing but a crock of shit. Now if you have been an Independent for years, fine, but this doing it just to get a free ride to the general election, get out of town, because the public knows your game.

I hope you are correct about the stimulus money Nib. I would hate for the village to miss out on "our" tax monies.

I saw on the stimulus request that money was requested to replace 20 miles worth of sidewalk in wellsville

Some have switched to be independents because they don't want to be affiliated with a party any longer. The county democratic party has left a bad taste in many mouths. An elected official does not have to be affiliated with any party nor does it have to stay true to any one party. Who cares what they run as so long as you get a chance to elect the best people for the job. I'm curious as to who the anonymous poster, mentioning this subject, is referring to.

Bullshit, they are taking a free ride. Not to many Independants seem to win, wonder why.

Independents have anything but a free ride. They disassociate themselves from a party affiliation by running as an Independent and that probably means losing any financial consideration for their campaigns. Getting signs made up and ads in the media ain't cheap. That's just one consideration. I'm sure there are more.

Why anyone files as an Independent is their business. The important thing is that they step up and give us voters more choices. Some commentators have been screaming that we need some new faces. I don't know why anyone would be disgruntled to have more choices on the ballot. There's no shame running as an Independent. I'm glad we have that option in our election laws.

If memory serves me correctly, an Independant almost took a seated Democrat's Mayoral Seat. Vote for the Person, not the Party affiliation.

Getting back to the Stimulus wish list. Someone on ORL gave a link to see what officials have put in for. That link is http://recovery.ohio.gov/more/. It's a MS Excel format and there is over 1600 pages. If you don't have Excel you can use Open Office. That's a free program that is similar to MS Business Office. That's what I used to peruse the list.

Anyhoo, Wellsville has $13.5 million in requests listed. It's everything that the Mayor told me about. It's on there under Saracco's name. It's doubtful we'll get awarded that much but as the mayor said "you have to shoot for the moon and hope you land on a star". It would certainly be nice but right now it's wait & see time.

Ty - You're absolutely correct and if memory serves me correctly that mayoral candidate took some convincing to get him to decide to throw his hat in the ring. Rosie Goss tried to run on the partisan ballot but got shot down with the lack of valid signatures on her petition. Rumor has it she hasn't given up.

We all know of someone we think would do a good job on council and serve us constituents well. There are some saying to themselves "heck, I can do better than that". Like that mayoral candidate they just need a little encouragement. I encourage anyone who thinks they can do that to pick up a petition and give it a go. It's far better to have tried and not make it then to say I never tried.

For those of you who think Kim Meek over at the Election Board should have bent the rules simply because she might know that Babe is actually Angela I have to totally disagree with you. To do so would be a serious infraction of the rules and could very well get her fired. I feel she had no choice and I doubt that she could have made such a move in the first place. She did the right thing.

BY THE WAY DO NOT INSULT ANYONE FROM THE SURACE CAMP DO HELP YOU OUT WITH YOUR ELECTION BECAUSE WE WONT DO IT OR WE WILL NOT GIVE YOU OUR VOTES SORRY WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND
