WHS Sports Station Appeal

Now in their fourth year of bringing play-by-play action into the homes, and to places all over the world, to Wellsville sports fans, the guys are asking for help. Because of these guys and others, they have been able to bring games and other Wellsville events to an untold number of folks that can't be there otherwise. There are troops in our Armed Forces from the ville serving all around the globe that are able to listen in and get a touch of home. If they can't listen to it live many times they can go back to the replays. There are Wellsville natives living all across the country that can keep in touch with the old hometown. There are people who can't physically get out that are able to keep up with what is going on and there are those that can't make the road trips that want to follow the teams.

It started with a fellow by the name of Terry Brown with an idea he approached the Village Mayor with. It was considered a great idea that brought Wellsville to be noticed via the World Wide Web. Over the last four years it has evolved to be much, much more. Now they need our help.

It cost $50 a game just to broadcast them. That's not counting what it cost to film it and put it on the Wellsville Alumni web site. Right now they tell me if they can't raise more money before the season ends they won't be able to bring us two of the last few games left for the boys basketball games. This team has a good chance to win the district and move on. They are that good. If that happens it will cost a minimum of $100 per game and up to around $200 to film it. Not one cent goes to the guys that bring us the games. They don't even take gas money. The cost we mentioned all goes for fees for the privilege of bringing us the games.

What they have done so far was made possible with a list of generous sponsors but you can only go to the well so often. This is where you and I can help. Won't you please help with whatever you can afford. It doesn't matter if it's only a dollar, $5, $10 or whatever you can spare. Every little bit helps.

WHS Lady Tigers 0 For 2 On The Week

Monday night the Lady Tigers traveled to the Austintown area for some McDonald "home cooking". By the end of the game the Lady Blue Devils had taken 35 shots from the free throw line. By contrast the Tigers only had 11 shots from the charity stripe. You figure it out. According to the paper Wellsville scored ten more field goals than McDonald.

In spite of the lop sided officiating the Lady Tigers battled to the very end only to come up short by two points at the end of an overtime period. You got to be proud of them. The Ladies from the ville never gave up and quit. This team has really developed over the season to become fierce competitors. With only one Senior Class member they are going to be causing a lot of teams some serious head aches in the future. They are starting to do that now.

Wellsville had two players to reach double figures for scoring. Mikyla Tipton led the Lady Tigers with 22 followed by Mieka Dalrymnple with 18. Dalrymple hit five three point shots.

Wellsville won the Reserve game by a score of 43 -23 with Dalrymple recording 12 points in that game.

In action last night (Thursday - Feb. 4), at home, the Ladies dropped a 7 point decision to the Sebring Lady Trojans. Wellsville trailed the whole first half going into the locker room down 11 points by a score of Sebring 32 - 21. As mentioned above they didn't give up. They came back in the third to outscore the Lady Ts 24 - 12. With 1:33 left in the third the Tigers took a 40 - 39 point lead. In the third & fourth quarters they out scored Sebring by four points. Unfortunately that first half was a little too much to overcome. By the time the clock ran out it was Sebring 66 - 59. The paper noted that Sebring had 34 free throws and 21 turn overs in that game. We don't know how many foul shots the Lady Tigers had but they only committed 15 turn overs.

Wellsville had three Ladies score in double figures. Meika Dalrymple led the charge with 22 points. Dalrymple hit six three pointers and led all scorers. Mikyla Tipton had 14 points, five rebounds and two steals according to the paper. Irene Kiser rounded out the double figures with 12 points, two assists and two steals. There was no Reserve game played last night.

The Ladies return to action Monday at home against Southern. That will be their last home game for the season. They finish out the regular season with three road trips at Jackson Milton, a make-up game at Sebring and finally at East Palestine.

The Lady Tigers are now 6 & 10 on the season. With the way they have come together to be serious contenders we know they are going to wrap up the regular season strong. We believed in them since early last December. Now they're showing us that belief wasn't misplaced. They are a good team.

Here Comes The Snow

Friday - February 5: It started around 1:30 this afternoon. In the very beginning today it was too warm to stick to the ground. Temperatures were in the mid-30s around noon. Since then they have been dropping and as we're writing it's 31 degrees on our thermometer.

This picture was taken around 4:15. It's sticking and the National Weather Service (NWS) is predicting that by tomorrow morning we could have 8 - 14" of the white stuff in Wellsville and the surrounding area. Some areas could get up to 16" by Saturday afternoon before it starts tapering off. Then it's going to remain cold. Right now the NWS isn't forecasting high temperatures out of the 20s all through next week. It ain't going nowhere soon.

This is the first of the snow pictures Jamie. We'll try to get more as it continues. If you don't have to go out it's wise to stay home. If you have to get out in it take plenty of time and be extremely careful. This is the heavy, thick snow that is very, very slick.

WHS Wrestling

Last Saturday, January 30, the WHS Wresting Team hosted the annual Buck Bailey Memorial Invitational tournament at the high school gym. In addition to the Wellsville team there were nine others teams competing.

The late Buck Bailey was a devoted Tiger wrestling fan. He ran the clock on home matches and followed the team everywhere. He even went to Columbus when there was a Tiger wrestler that qualified for the State.

For the first time in eight years the Tigers won the tournament accumulating 148.5 points. Runner-up was Weirton Madonna with 115 points. Wellsville had three athletes win Championships in their weight class. Matt Flanigan won at 152#, Tim LaClair at 171# and Bubba Dowling at 215#. Flanigan, pictured above, was named Tournament MVP.

Wellsville split in a Tri-angular match this past Wednesday against Steubenville Catholic Central and Weirton Madonna. They beat Steubenville by a score of 54 - 6 with Jason Dowling, Tim White and Bubba Dowling winning their matches. Bubba Dowling was the only Tiger to win in the second match vs. Weirton and that was in four overtimes. Weirton picked up a 33 - 21 win in that one. According to the paper there were several forfeits in both matches.

As a team the Tigers are now 4 & 3 on the season. They travel to Magnolia tomorrow for another tournament.

WHS Tigers Bring Home Win #13

Friday - January 29: The WHS Tigers broke the Berlin Center Curse. Until this past Friday night they have never won on Western Reserve's home court. They did it in convincing fashion bringing home a 22 point victory on the bus trip back to the ville. Not being able to make the trip we did the next best thing. We listened to the whole game on WHS Sports Station via the World Wide Web. Thanks for being there Joe, Roger & Bud.

The Tigers kept things even at the end of one quarter with a 13 - 13 score. That was even with a Jalen DeSarro slam dunk with less then three minutes to go in the first. That had to be intimidating for the Blue Devils. That DeSarro dunk made the score Wellsville 11 - 6 and the Devils gamely tied it up at 13 with 40 seconds left in the first.

After that is was all downhill for the Berlin Center home team. In the second and third quarters Wellsville put up 36 points on the board compared to only 11 for Western Reserve. Stepping up the defensive pressure in those two quarters the Blue Devils had trouble getting rebounds or even holding on to the ball. Meanwhile the Tigers were making some amazing passes, recording assists, clearing the boards and ringing up three pointers. We counted four three pointers in those two frames.

Leading with a score 56 - 27 Coach Thompson started clearing the bench to finish up the last three or four minutes of the game. There's still a few of the starting five fighting the virus bug. However, just like in the last few games, those Tigers didn't let it slow them down. The Tigers finished the game with a final score of 64 - 42.

Four Tigers finished scoring in the double figures. Jalen DeSarro recorded another double double leading all scorers with 16 points and 11 rebounds. DeSarro also had three steals according to the newspaper. Nunzio Lombardozzi was third in the scoring with 14 points. Four of those buckets were outside of the three point line. Mike Johnston netted 15 points and DeShon Pullie added another 12. Pullie also had five assists and two three pointers. Nick Broughton grabbed seven rebounds and added another three points. Jeremy Carter played a whale of a defensive game grabbing eight rebounds and four steals. The Tigers finished the night with seven three pointers. Lombardozzi had four, Pullie had two and DeSarro even got one. How's that for balance? Friday's victory was number 100 for Coach Thompson. Check it out below.

The Tigers return to action Tuesday night at undefeated McDonald. Back on January 5 McDonald handed the Orange & Black their only loss by a mere two points with 2.8 seconds left in the game. It was a heart breaker. Now the Tigers are going to go up there to avenge that one. We have to agree with Coach Thompson and the WHS Sports announcers. The Tigers haven't played a better team this year. They've shown they can beat teams calling themselves the Blue Devils. We know they're going to do it again Tuesday night on the road. Don't let up for one second. Even the virus bug didn't stop you all. McDonald may be tough but they are not tough enough when you play your game.

100th Varsity Basketball Win

With a 22 point victory over Western-Reserve a very talented WHS Varsity Basketball Team presented Coach Dave "Bug" Thompson with win number 100 this past Friday night. We'll have more on the game later. Thompson went through the Wellsville School system graduating in 1972. A friend of ours recently remarked that "Bug was a heckuva athlete himself". He was part of the tradition known as "Wellsville basketball".

Thompson began his coaching career in 1987. He started out coaching Middle School, Freshman and Junior Varsity Teams. Now in his sixth year as the Varsity Head Coach he has amassed a record of 100 wins and only 24 heart breaking defeats. Bug takes each and every game to heart. That's a pretty amazing record for a guy with only five and half years under his belt.

Pictured here doing what he loves best is Thompson offering words of advice to his players during a December 19 game against East Liverpool. With 13 victories so far this season Thompson looks forward to victory 101 tomorrow tonight at McDonald. He's a nice guy and a little embarrassed with this attention. He'll talk your ear off about the players on his team and would rather be focused on that.

Chamber-of-Commerce January Luncheon

Thursday - January 28: The Wellsville Chamber-of-Commerce January luncheon was held this past Thursday at Kat's Kitchen on Main Street. The meeting portion was called to order by Chamber President Randy Allmon and Paul Blevins offered invocation.

Allmon welcomed Wellsville's Barber Shop and owner J.C. Coulter as the Chamber's newest member. Coulter opened Wellsville's third barber shop in January at 458 Main Street. See our article dated 1/21/10 titled Wellsville's New Business.

The Chamber commended two Village police officers for their heads up, alert performance of duty in the early hours of January 7. While on routine patrol around 3:30 in the morning the two officers spotted what they at first thought was a bag blowing down the street. What they found was a five year old boy walking down the street with just a blanket wrapped around him in blowing snow and 23 degree temperatures. Both officers were presented plaques in recognition of their outstanding attention to detail. Quoting Board Member Dolly Brophey "she shutters to think what would have happened if the two officers had not spotted the five year old". Pictured above is Brophey, from the left, presenting a plaque to Officer Justin Wright, with WPD Chief Joe Scarabino looking on and Officer Glenn LaClair receiving his plaque from Chamber Historian Marge Dysert. In our opinion both officers would make excellent candidates for Man-of-the-Year honors.

Allmon also announced that TechGrowth Ohio will be presenting programs entitled Re-Inventing Small Business in Appalachia and Advanced Energy - A New Opportunity for Business Growth at several locations starting February 5. US Congressman Charlie Wilson will be the keynote speaker. The events will take place in Ironton, Marietta, Rio Grande, St. Clairsville and Steubenville. A benefit breakfast will be held Saturday, February 6, for Marjorie Witherow Minor. The breakfast is from 8:30 - 10:30 A.M. at Highlandtown's United Methodist Church Inverness Hall. It is sponsored by the church. Minor is a 39 year employee of CF Bank.

Business of the Month honors went to Sell's Auction Service. See article below. Allmon remarked that the fund raising auction held last summer for the gazebo renovations was hugely successful thanks to Sell's help.

Dolly Brophey advised that she is chairing the House of the Month Committee this year along with Committee Members Vicki McCombs and Margaret Gill. Brophey said that anyone wanting to nominate a house when the time rolls around to give her a call at 330-532-1807.

Guest speaker was Dr. Laura Meeks, President of Eastern Gateway Community College (EGCC). Dr. Meeks, pictured above, received her PhD from Kansas State University. She grew up a farm girl in Minnesota. Before starting her address Dr. Meeks remarked that she was honored to be in the presence of retired English teacher Marge Dysert. With her father eking out a living driving truck, Dr. Meeks related that it was an English teacher that convinced her she was smart enough and could afford to go on to college to full fill her dreams. For that reason English teachers hold a special place in her heart.

Dr. Meeks was accompanied by EGCC Director of Infomation Ann Koon. EGCC is located at 4000 Sunset Blvd. in Steubenville in the facilities that was formerly Jeff Tech. EGCC was authorized by the Ohio General Assembly in July of last year. They offer 11 Associate Degree Programs, six Certificate Programs and currently 240 course sections. They even offer on-line programs. Dr. Meek related that courses at EGCC are primarily set up to educate future job holders or to enhance a job holder's abilities.

Class sizes average 13 - 14 students allowing for one of the best teacher - student ratios in the state. Credit hours are $96 each which means that tuition, fees and books generally cost $5,000 per year. They have six different locations with day & evening classes. EGCC works closely with local universities so credits transfer easily. For more information check out their web site at http://www.egcc.edu/. WPD Officers Jasper Cannon, Justin Wright & Glenn LaClair remarked they got their law enforcement training there, with LaClair adding it's a quality education close to home.
