Shown here is a picture of part of 10th Street Extension that is going to be repaired with the grant money Council voted to accept last week. The car in the picture is west bound and quite a bit left of center to avoid the rough surface. As you can see there is not much ditch there to keep run off water diverted off the roadway. Watching about a dozen cars in the short time I was there only one of them didn't move into the other lane.
Council meets tonight in regular session at 6 P.M. at Village Hall. It will be the only regularly scheduled meeting for this month. If you want to address Council and be on record you'll have to do it tonight or wait until next month.
We finally got a little bit of Stimulus Money when the Village received a C.O.P.S. grant to add an officer to the WPD. Wellsville was only one of three communities in the county that was rewarded this grant. According to a piece in the Pittsburgh Trib-Review, across the entire US there were only 1,000 grants awarded for this program out of about 7,000 applications.
Yesterday in Common Pleas Court Eric Dillard was sentenced to 23 years to life after being found guilty of murder and gun violations. The prosecutor for the J.C. Amato murder trial asked for an continuance. The status hearing scheduled for August 10 has been changed to a motions hearing.
In an ER article about the new state budget for the schools it was noted that the Wellsville School District will lose $43,824 in funding in the next two years. We'll probably have to wait until the next Board-of-Education meeting to see what effect that will have on our district. They meet August 17.
The Columbiana County Fair opened yesterday over in Lisbon. The first county fair was held in 1845. The fair runs through next Sunday.
Wellsville resident Nikki D'Atri is getting a support group together locally for families with children with Downs Syndrome. Until now the closest support group was located in Jefferson County. Anyone wishing for more information can call D'Atri at 330-532-3684.
The Wellsville Revitalization Committee has got the ville featured on the Discover Ohio web site. It's listed under "Artist Paints the Town". As you well can guess it's about the floodwall murals. Chuck Franklin on his http://www.pow-peopleofwellsville.blogspot.com/ did a nice piece on artist Gina Hampson back in June.
The Italian Festival kicks off Thursday this week. This annual three day event is held on Main Street in front of the S.O.I. Club with lots of entertainment and good eats. Saturday evening they award scholarships. Each night has a different local band as part of the entertainment. Check out http://www.wellsvilleohio.net/ for the whole schedule of who, what and when.
Next Saturday at noon the Broadway Park dedication ceremonies will be held. It's open to the public and I believe will be in the 7th Street area of Broadway. Among other dignitaries ODNR Director Sean Logan is suppose to be there.
On August 12th the Buckeye Water District is having an open house from 2P.M. until 4 P.M. at the new Water Treatment Plant out on Route 45. There will be guided tours for anyone wanting to see the state of the art facilities. It's something to see.
