SNOW REMOVAL

In anticipation of more snow falling on the area starting tomorrow Wellsville Village officials are getting a clean-up plan started this evening. Starting tonight at 9 P.M. crews from Mike Pusateri Excavating will be going from street to street cleaning up as much snow as possible. Residents will be asked to move any cars parked on the street until after the clean-up.

Officers from the Wellsville Police Dept. will be going door to door asking residents to move their vehicles to enable the clean-up. Streets will be blocked off as the clean-up goes on to insure uninterrupted progress.

At a meeting earlier today Mayor Joe Surace and other Village officials met with members of the Police, Fire and Street Departments to evaluate the current situation. It was reported that as many streets as possible, as fast as possible, are being plowed. The biggest problem is the huge piles of snow scattered all throughout the Village. There is no where to go with any additional snow with the equipment the Village has on hand. When asked what would happen if we got another six inches of snow as forecasted one Street Dept. employee said "We're dust!" Piles of snow are blocking drains and hampering clean-up efforts now.

It was decided at that meeting the situation is an emergency and to call in additional help. Snow will be picked up and hauled away in dump trucks by the excavating company. They were looking at the pondage area in the lower end of town as a possible dumping ground. Any volunteers with plows and trucks wanting to join in the effort are asked to report in to the Mayor's Office or the Fire Station so a co-ordination plan can be put into to place.

All residents are asked for their full cooperation in the clean-up. This is being done for your safety. If you do not have any off street parking consider temporary parking in various business or church parking lots until after the clean-up.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for our area from Tuesday morning until Wednesday afternoon. A strong pressure system moving eastward through the Upper Ohio Valley Tuesday through Wednesday may bring more than five (5) to nine (9) inches of additional snow accumulation into our area. The Winter Storm Warning means there is a strong likelyhood for significant additional snow accumulation, which may be heavy at times, on top of the snow already on the ground. Time is of the essence in the clean-up attempts.

Your help and cooperation is essential.

I can recall during my tenures in Chicago, they had a plan in place to dump the snow in Lake Michigan. With the amounts they got, it really was a great idea and actually saved the mayor's (Daily,s) job as his predecessors all lost their re-elections bids due to the same situation.

I do not know if there is access to the river. Maybe down by the old brick yard?

Wonder what a load of snow is going for today?

I came into town about 11:00 P.M. tonight and I saw all this heavy equipment moving snow around by the Dairy Queen. I wondered what was going on until I read your post. Kudos to the Mayor or Council or whoever paid this Company to take our snow away. It takes a little money to make things bearable during tough times like this. Money well spent. Thank you!

Actually with the RR running along the river there really isn't anyplace safe to back a dump truck up to unload snow. With salt mixed in there was concern about environmental issues too. The pondage area was considered the lesser of two evils.

Being in a "State of Emergency" area there should be FEMA money to reimburse local governments. According to an article in this morning's papers it covers over-time hours, fuel and equipment usage. Let's hope so.

Wiz - Contact the Village Administrator. We're sure they can line you up a few loads at a very reasonable price!

I called! They told me you wanted first shot and there probably wouldn't be any left. Guess I'll have to wait for next year. :)
