'THE REVIEW' Upsets Wellsville Mayor
Saturday - February 13: Wellsville Mayor Joe Surace reported today he feels the WHS Boys Basketball Team was insulted by The Review in this morning's edition. We have to agree with him.
Last night both the boy's & girl's basketball teams traveled to Jackson-Milton for a double header. The girls won the first game beating the Lady Blue Devils by a score of 68 - 35. In this morning's edition of The Review they got a well deserved write-up for that victory. Area leading Lady scorer Mikyla Tipton contributed 29 points toward that 68 total. The Lady Tigers are heads over heels improved from the early stages of the season. They have really come together as a team and will finish the season strong. Sophomore Tipton is an aggressive sharp shooter and usually has a hot hand but she'll tell you herself. She is only one of the five players on the floor. From watching the Ladies all season we can vouch she is a team player. The Lady's game last night deserved every one of those nine short paragraphs they got in this morning's Review.
What wasn't deserved was the two sentence report at the end of the article on the Men's game. The Tiger men played an outstanding game. With two of the starting five sitting on the bench the Tigers put a whooping on the Blue Devils winning the match 89 - 57. Quoting from The Review those two sentences said "The Wellsville boys also defeated Jackson-Milton. The Tigers won the boys game, 89 - 57". End of quote. What's up with that?
Working with the same material the Morning Journal did much better. At the end of each game the home team faxes the stats to the newspapers for their next day editions. Last night Junior Michael Johnston was on fire scoring a career high 41 points. He was 16 of 22 attempts that included netting eight 3-pointers. While Johnston was doing nearly half of the scoring his team mates were impressive in other ways. Quoting the MJ "DeSarro totaled 18 points and seven rebounds and Jeremy Carter collected 10 points, nine rebounds, eight assists and five steals. Jordan Dalrymple dished out nine assists and Sean Hudson grabbed six rebounds." The MJ took the time to give us customers a good report on the area's best basketball team this year.
As a result of this slight by The Review the Mayor asks, that if you feel as we do, to call and register a complaint. Ask for the Sports Editor or THE Editor. If you don't get an answer leave a voice mail message. Let them know, in no uncertain terms, that their many customers in Wellsville back the Tigers. We customers deserve better coverage. The Mayor said he has already called.
Also, the Mayor wanted to extend a special thanks to Florida resident Jim Bright and Doug & Bob Logan of LSW for their generous donations to the WHS Sports Station. Bright is a native of the ville and the Logan brothers dad and grand parents are former Wellsville people. They're just a few that want the chance to at least listen to the games broad casted on the WHS Alumni web site. You can help too by sending whatever amount you can afford to MCS or WHS Sports Station, 1200 Main St., Wellsville, OH 43968. Every bit goes to paying the fee that the League demands. Guaranteed. Surace, along with Bud Ceneviva and Roger Miller, are the announcers that bring us the play-by-play. If they can stay out of trouble the Tigers are going way beyond the regular season this year. They are awesome.
Don't forget to call The Review. The phone number is 330-385-4545.

Better yet cancel your subscription to the Review and get the Morning Journal. The MJ usually has the same articles as the Review and much better coverage of the Inter-Tri County League games.
Personally we enjoy both publications for various reasons. The MJ has better coverage for what's going on in the northern part of the county. It helps us nibby folks in the southern part of the county satisfied on that part. Plus, as you say they have better coverage of the ITCL in Sports. On the other hand the ER has better coverage of our neighbors across the river in Hancock County. It seems to us we don't see much of that in the MJ. If you're a sports enthusiast the ER has better OVAC coverage.
Both papers are owned by the same publishing company and are both printed on the same presses over in Lisbon. A year or so ago they consolidated reporter's jobs and many, such as JoBob, now supply coverage for both editions. Frankly we're surprised the publishing company hasn't consolidated both publications into one newspaper, especially in these economic times. We would hate to see it come about. It would mean more job loses and both publications have a rich history that goes back to the 19th Century.
We were born & raised in an era when the print media was our most reliable source of news in our area. We still enjoy getting ink on our hands.
