WHS Sports Station Not Sponsored With School Funds

In last Thursday's edition of the Morning Journal there was a picture of the WHS Sports Station announcers at the Leetonia basketball game last week. They were announcing the Tigers vs Leetonia game over the internet station that is broadcast live.

The picture was entitled “Mayor on the microphone” and the caption read “Surace was speaking on the school-run radio station”. That caption was misleading. The audio broadcasts are done over the internet by a group of all volunteers with absolutely no funding from the school system. All costs are paid for through a list of generous sponsors and individual donors. Other than providing a space for them to set up and a little bit of electricity to run their equipment it is a service provided free to the school system and the listeners.

WHS Sports Station was started a few years ago and was the brain child of Terry Brown, owner of wkmxlive Internet broadcasting station located on Main Street in Wellsville. Brown approached Mayor Joe Surace with the idea and it took off from there. It was an idea to promote the Village while enabling those who can't make it to the games to listen to all the action on their computers. All the equipment was paid for with money raised through the solicitation of donations. Travel expenses for the guys that travel to the games comes out of their own pockets. Each game they cover is taped and the next day can be seen on Sparky Miller's web site at www.wellsvillealumni.com, where the games can also be heard in real time.

The group started out with WHS football games, moved on to Men's basketball and some special events in town. They cover some of the girl's basketball games when funds are available. The ITCL Conference charges a fee of $50 for each league game. Sponsors that make it possible are :
Kats Kitchen,Save-A-Lot,Amato Law Office,Heatons Tire Shop,Johnston Auto Body,Dave & Kari Storage Rentals,Joe's Bar & Grill - Drive Thru,Six Recycling,Roberts Funeral Home,Martin MacLean Altmeyer Funeral Home,Jim's Service,J.S.M. Storage,Inter - Labor Union,Center Pharmacy,BOSS Cyber School,Wellsville Lions Club,Tonda's Place,Gibby's Mini Mart plus others.

Individual donors such as Mary Ellen Reed & Nick Grande help out. Grande is a member of WHS Class of 56 and now resides in Florida. He's a regular listener and has a son serving in the Armed Forces in Korea who enjoys checking out the action. The service provided is made possible only through the sponsors and donors.

Pictured above are the guys announcing a game last month in the Tiger's Den. From the left is Rodger Miller, Joe Surace & Bud Ceneviva. Check 'em out. They'll be back this coming Friday doing the McDonald game. We appreciated all they do and think you will too.

Maybe instead of correcting it on your blog, they shouldve called the MJ photographer to correct it in the paper

Yea, that thought crossed my mind too. We waited a couple of days to see a correction thinking surely it would have been brought to the paper's attention.

With negotiations going on with the WTA I'm sure that this misleading infromation was given to the M.J. Thanks nib for making the correction on your blog. However; the Journal should print a retaction.
