Wellsville's Buck Bailey Wrestling Tournament 2011


Saturday – January 29: The annual Buck Bailey Wrestling Tournament took place this past Saturday in the Tiger's Den. There were teams from 14 different schools entered in this years tournament. The annual tournament is hosted by Wellsville in memory of the late Buck Bailey.

Thomas “Buck” Bailey was a huge Wellsville wrestling fan. Back in the 1970s he had a couple of sons that were Wellsville wrestlers according to his wife Jane. For years Buck was the announcer and ran the clock for all WHS wrestling matches. Buck left us in March of 2000 and the tournament is held in honor of Wellsville wrestling's #1 fan.

Wrestlers from West Geauga, Toronto, Steubenville Big Red, South Range, Steubenville Catholic Central, Oak Glen, John Marshall, Edison, Connottin Valley, Buckeye Local, Malvern, Sandy Valley, East Liverpool and Wellsville participated in this year's matches. Edison Local took the first place team championship with 181-1/2 points. Second place went to West Geauga with 115 points, third place to John Marshall with 108 points and South Range took the fourth trophy with 90 points. Wellsville finished in 11th place with 62-1/2 points. WHS Senior Jacob McIntosh took the gold medal winning in the 160# weight class final.

In the lower left corner in the collage above is Mrs. Jane Bailey with daughter Tina Moore in the middle and grand daughter Alyssa Wellington. Jane & Buck had five children and Tina is the baby of the Bailey siblings. Mrs. Bailey presents the awards each year at the annual tournament.

Wellsville wrestlers get back to action this coming Saturday, February 5 traveling to Magnolia. They wrap up this year's season at home February 9 against Weirton Madonna and February 12 against St. Clairsville.
