Tuesday - January 12: The WAMA met yesterday morning for the first time of the New Year with the regular breakfast meeting at Tonda's Place. Present at the meeting was Pastor Troy Waner, President, Rev. Roosevelt Thompson, V.P., Rev. Darlene Zanders, Secretary and Deacon Terry McCuen, Treasurer. Also present was Pastor Dirk Hall, retired Rev. Nightingale and Bishop Bill Rudder.
For the Treasurer's Report, First Baptist Deacon Terry McCuen reported that $960 was donated at the Community Fall Revival held in November. Donations were made to the Jacob Lunder's Stay Strong Fund, the Youth With A Purpose Home and the Tobin Center. The Paint-the-Town fund remains at $297. Rev. Warner remarked he has been told the poverty level in Columbiana County is 57%. The level in Wellsville is around the 70% mark. It is important that all the area congregations pitch in together to lend help to all in need.
Thank you notes were received from the Tobin Center and the Youth With A Purpose Home.
Warner also reported some good news about Jacob Lunder. Jake is starting to experience some muscle movement in his legs. Lunder is the Beaver Local Senior and First Christian member who was partially paralyzed after a car accident going home one evening from basketball practice. That is good news about Jacob. Lets all continue to keep him in our prayers for a complete recovery.
Could those numbers possibly be right? 70% of Wellsville is living at or below the poverty level? As a former resident (who remembers Wellsville from it's better days) that makes me incredibly sad.
We're not sure where Rev. Warner got his figures but I wouldn't doubt that they are pretty accurate, especially with today's economy. What industry we got left in the tri-state area are all struggling to hold on. For the past three decades it has been one business after the other closing down with not much moving in to replace them. In that same time frame we've seen a declining poplulation all over the area and a steady brain drain with people moving out to find work. Many of the people that do have jobs around here are working for minimum wage or close to it and fall under the poverty level guidelines because of the low wages. It's an eye opener and as you say incredibly sad. However, we're not giving up. As sure as night follows day better things are in store for the ville. It's a great place to live and good things are coming. It's just not as fast as we hoped for.

We've been waiting too long. It seems it may be too late
