Wellsville Rid of One More Eyesore

This house that was located at the corner of 18th & Commerce Streets is gone. It had been abandoned, condemned and for years declining into steady disrepair. Last year the Village purchased this property for a little over $5,000 at a Sheriff's Sale. It had been foreclosed on for of nonpayment of real estate taxes.

The Village is considering using this corner lot to make the turn wider on that corner for tractor trailers to use as a possible alternate route for trucks going to and leaving the Wellsville Terminals and Marathon Oil at the lower end of town. Currently trucks leaving or going to the Nevada Street businesses travel back and forth on Main, 17th and Clark Ave.

The picture of the house above is nearly two years old. Since then the house began leaning to one side.
Village officials felt it was increasingly becoming a safety hazard and the Mayor declared it an emergency. A contractor was hired to bring it down. The second picture is what the lot looks like as of yesterday.

Except for additional cleaning up and filling in the basement this lot is ready to go. The demolishion of this house was not part of the Neighborhood Stabilization program.

That would be a real smart decesion on the Village's part. Let's make a truck route right down the street that a whole bunch of kids play. Sure the Houseing Authority will love this one.

Remember we said they were considering it as an alternate. No concrete decisions have been made. Their first choice is to build a street along the railroad tracks from 18th to the Intermodal Park to exit onto Route 7. Whichever way they got it's not going to happen anytime soon. There's simply not the funds available at any level of government to do the project. However, for the price they paid for that piece of property, we feel it would've been foolish not to acquire it.

I think the village got ripped off. They probably have about $10,000 invested in a worthless lot.

Thought that about the street sweeper that was hauled in after purchasing, how many years ago, and has how many hours on it? Thought that when they paid someone to tear down a perfectly good building to store salt, and purchase a canopy to store it. Thought that when they hired a consultant for how many thousands of dollars, and for what? Thought that when they purchased a utility trailer that is behind village hall, which is packed full of documents, with no heat in it.Thought that when money was spent for The Spring Hill Cemetery home, was refurbished, and to only see it sit empty, no heat, and getting destroyed. Seen hundreds of pictures of the renovation of that home, before, during and after, and can't believe what they have done. You say they would have been foolish to not purchase the property for what they paid for it,alittle over $5,000, and in the same breath say this village is broke. Where they get the money?Look at all the foolishness so far, and this is only SOME of the examples of wasted money. Thought they did not have any money? Is that not why SOME PEOPLE are sacrificing? And heaven forbid some council members not take a cut,and sacrifice. I must say, sure showed alot of responsibility and dedication to our village on that comment.

Sounds like an excellent idea! Just have the trucks cut the corner through the yard and hope some poor kid isn't ran over in the process.

Don't expect rational thought after all of this time. I remember when they were so broke that they built a pavillion at 18 st playground in the middle of December so ice & snow could hang from it for the next 3 mths. As if there weren't more pressing matters if they found some extra funds.

Wonder how many corners are being cut and permits not acquired to do the Sterling China Project? Might just have to do some asking.
