RIP Edgar

Wellsville lost an icon this past Tuesday morning. Edgar H. Rockenhauser passed on to his eternal reward around 9 AM Tuesday at Calcutta Health Care Center. Edgar was only 75 years old. Many of you may have known him as "Edgar Peck" but Peck was his mother's maiden name. Edgar suffered a massive stroke several months ago and his recovery was a steep up-hill battle that proved to be just too much.

For those of us that knew Edgar knew that he was cut from the fabric of old fashion values. Edgar believed in giving a fair day's work for the money he was paid. No job was too demeaning, too hard or too messy for Edgar to tackle. Up until the day he was stricken he was willing to tackle any job that men half his age would back away from. Edgar would bring down a house single handedly, piece by piece. His only tools would be a hammer, crow bar and ladder. All the owner needed to do was order the dumpsters to dispose of the waste. He would top a tree only using a hand saw and ladder.

Edgar was the type of man you hired for a job to be done and knew he would do a good job at that. He required no supervision once he knew what had to be done. He was dependable, reasonable and thorough. In our opinion he was a heck of an amazing guy. He may have marched to a different drummer but he was a good man.

After posting this last night we have since received a call from a representative of Robert's Funeral Home stating that Edgar or his family had made prearrangements for his life end details. Financially everything was taken care of for his funeral and his wishes are being followed per his request and directions. Our anonymous commenter was ill informed and wrong. We apologize for the wrong information. Anyone wishing to make a donation in Edgar's memory can make one to his family or a charity of their choice. Please do not send it to Robert's.

Rest in peace old buddy...

Not to take away from this man's importance or to sound disrespectful but the law requires communities to have an indigent burial fund for residents who don't have any means of support for burial. Check with your city officials or law director

Poor guy spent his whole life doing the worst jobs that exist. What an existence.

Oh wow Nib. Wonderful write-up for Edgar. Everything you said was so very true of him.
You did him a great honor.

We were mislead about Edgar's funeral. According to Erin Roberts-Orr prearrangements had been made and everything was being taken care of per Edgar's wishes. Roberts can not accept donations toward his funeral expenses.

We went back and edited the original post to make that correction. We learned a lot just talking to Edgar from time to time. Wish he would have reminded me about Wellsville rumors. We found that Edgar had a great sense of humor. Bet he's smiling down saying "got you on that one buddy". Sorry to have mislead anyone.

Now here was someone I wish could have been a Wellsville Legend. He would have loved it. He was someone that will make people smile and tell an Edgar story whenever is name is mentioned. He had the flavor of our village all through him.

People like Edgar never get recognition until they die. A lesson for people to treat each other better in this town. Thank you Edgar for everything you did.. I am sure you did not hear that enough.

Sharen - Although we didn't publish your comment thanks for the info. It explains a lot but for dignity reasons we didn't use it. Thankfully everything got taken care of and Edgar will be able to rest in peace. You've been most helpful.

blogdog, we were going to honor Edgar as a Wellsville Legend and were prepared to do so. But when he had his stroke we decided to hold off hoping he'd recover. That's the sad part about doing something like this. It's a race against the clock in a lot of cases. In the time it took me to get the award off the ground, 4 of the people we wanted to honor died. Several of the ones we have honored have also died. Wish I had started 10 years earlier. So long Edgar, RIP.

How about posthumously hootch?

Hootch2...I think it is wonderful that you were going to honor him. He certainly was a colorful Wellsville character. It's nice to know that. Thanks.
