Fireman's Carnival

It'll be here before you know it. The 2nd Annual Rejuvenation of the Wellsville VFD's Homecoming is scheduled to begin Wednesday, May 27, and run through Saturday, May 30. Mark it on your calendars. They have something for just about everyone. It's a fun way to help support the volunteers who are so vital to this village.

Once again the carnival will be held at the 20th Street ball field. That's the large field that sits behind the football stadium. Rides, games and food will be offered each day from 5 P.M. - 10 P.M. Rides are provided by Brown Amusements. Starting on Thursday they have entertainment that includes karaoke and bands. There will be bingo and those ever popular French fries.

Saturday, the last day of the festivities, will start off with a parade from Kwik King to the ball field. Registration & line up for the parade will begin at 1 P.M. There will trophies awarded to the top three units, the Chief's Choice and the J. Herman Heiney Award. The Heiney award is presented to a fire department in memory of all who have served as fire fighters. Following the parade there will be a Fireman's Challenge which includes a bucket brigade & tug-of-war. A traveling plaque will be awarded to the winning department. The parade will begin at 3 P.M.

Capping off the four days of fun will be a fireworks display by Pyrotecnico of New Castle, PA. at the ball field. Fireworks are to begin at 10 P.M. and were made possible by generous donations from 19 different businesses and organizations. The fireworks is a tradition that goes back to days of old that these donors made possible. Pyrotecnico is the same company that does the Calcutta Memorial Day events.

Advance ride tickets are now available at the Fire Station for $5 for four tickets. Each ride requires one ticket. There will be a Saturday special with a ride all day bracelet being sold. You won't need ride tickets if you purchase the bracelet for Saturday.

Heading up this year's event is "Chairman-for-Life" Jamie McMahon. For additional information you can call 330-532-2253, 330-831-9061 or 330-532-1338. Any units wishing to get in the parade can call one of these numbers too.

See ya there...

I have to say the Firemen did a good job last year, knowing how much time goes into doing events like this, for it being their first year, my hats off to them, the parade was the best I remember in Wellsville in a long time, it was nice having them come down Clark Avneue for a change. I can't wait to see a real fireworks display in Wellsville for the first time in 25 odd years, Saint Rocco's were the last to my knowledge, I remember sitting on the hood of my Dad's car on blankets on Route 7, waiting for the show to begin. Ah the good old days.
