Chamber-of-Commerce April Luncheon 2009

The monthly Chamber luncheon was held this past Thursday, April 30, at Dalonzos on Main St. After invocation by Paul Blevins, Chamber President Randy Allmon got things started by showing the fold-out map of the ville that will be the center part of the new promotional brochure. The theme of the new brochure will be "Wellsville: A Rising Star on the River". Allmon remarked "I couldn't think of anything more appropriated, because Wellsville is a rising start with Baard coming". He also said when the finished, colored edition is completed there will be 10,000 copies printed.

Other announcements made was that the Chamber is donating $100 to the Wellsville Memorial Council for this year's observance of Memorial Day. Don Brown told me last week that plans for this year's event have been completed and will be announced shortly.

The 16th Annual EL Area Community Prayer Breakfast will be May 7 at 7:30 A.M. at the EL Motor Lodge. This year's speaker is Rev. Walt Coppersmith, executive pastor of the Westminster Presbyterian Church of America in Butler, PA. Tickets will cost $9. The EL Chamber is one of the sponsors for the event.

Also on May 7 is the National Day of Prayer at the Gazebo from 12:15 - 12:45 P.M. Pastor Troy Warner, President of the Ministerial Association, is in charge of the program.

The Rabies Clinic sponsored by the Chamber is May 23 in the parking lot of the old Sky Bank on Main from 12 Noon - 2:00 P.M. Proceeds from the clinic will go to the benefit of the St. Francis Animal Shelter. Allmon said there was some confusion on that point and later clarified it.

Business After Hours will be hosted by Air Waves & owners Beverly & Lonnie Hentzell on May 21 at 6 P.M. at their place of business on Main St. This is a social event allowing the opportunity to get better acquainted with your neighbors in the business community.

Next month's luncheon will be held Tuesday, May 19, at Dalonzo's. The change from the usual last Thursday of the month is because it will be the annual Seniors Luncheon honoring the top 10 students of WHS Class of 2009.

Business of the Month honors went to the Amato Law Office owned by Chris & Nick Amato. Their office is located at 10th & Main here in the ville.

The guest speaker this month was Dave Marshall, pictured above and owner of the Mezzanine Mall & Coffee Fusion located in the old Olgivie building in EL. Dave is a member of the ELHS Class of '61 but has spent most of his life out in California. He is an Air Force veteran, worked in the space program and a retired realitor.

Mr. Marshall came to speak as Chairman of LEEP (Leadership Education for Economic Progress). Dave told us there is opportunity in this valley and we all need to pool our forces and our resources to get things accomplished. It's not unusual to find six different groups in our tri-state area individually working on the same goal. This just splits up the forces and often leads to being overlooked by the politicians who dole out the money for various projects. Personally I couldn't help thinking of the lack of stimulus money that came to this area.

Marshall said the different Chambers in the different communities have to get together. We have to get involved with the different Ministerial Associations and other organizations to pool our forces. The greater the number the more the power there will be to get things accomplished. By pooling these forces together we can demand things from the government, not just ask for them. This can work on all levels of government from the county to the state to the federal. We don't have to be the forgotten Ohio Valley.

Marshall wrapped up his talk saying "get off your butts. Get active. Things can get changed in the whole community if we get together". It is certainly food for thought.
