A Special Arbor Day Observance

This past Wednesday, April 29, the Wellsville Tree Board held their second annual observance with planting another white oak tree at Hammonds Park. This year they made it special by including all the students in the ville's third grade. The tree was donated by ville native Pat Broderick.

The students arrived in two buses numbering somewhere around 70. Before coming they watched a movie called Arbor Day: The Holiday That Makes A Difference. From that movie they learned how a tree is started from a single seed and for it to grow it needs water, soil, sun and air. The movie also touched on the importance of what trees mean to all of us. I must say these kids are pretty sharp. They answered all the questions the committee members asked them without hesitation.

After a brief introduction each student got the opportunity to help plant the tree by throwing a shovel full of dirt. They were awed when told that this oak tree will live to be 80 to 100 feet tall.

After the tree was planted the students played a game based on the life cycle of a tree. Afterwards each student was given a memento to take home with them.

On hand for the ceremonies were Tree Board members Sid & Mary Ann Cannon, Jay & Diane Dinch, Susie Haugh & Dawn Johnson. City Councilman Joe Soldano was also there. Diane was Project Chairman for this year's events.

This year's tree was dedicated to the 2009 Class of Third Graders. Over the years those students will be able to watch the tree grow and be able to say that's the tree we planted.

Kudos to the Tree Board for making this a special event that these young folks will remember for a life time. As I said before you guys are part of what makes the ville some place special.

Thanks for being there Nib! We had a great time with the kids and I was really impressed with what they knew. I hope that day becomes a special memory as they grow older.
