The Wellsville BOE met in Special Session Tuesday afternoon in the Superintendent's office. In attendance was Board President Tom Brophey, members Ed Bauer, Mike Cook, Karen Dash, Danielle Meek, Superintendent Rich Bereschek, Asst. Superintendent Lisa Ferguson & Treasurer Coleen Wickham.
The purpose of the meeting was to consider the appointment of veteran Wellsville educator James R. Brown as interim principal of Daw Middle School. School started a week ago today on Wednesday, August 26. On the Friday before that, August 21, Daw Middle School Principal Dave Buzzard resigned to accept a similar poisition in Columbiana. With the power invested in him by the Board, Superintendent Bereschek appointed Brown as a temporary interim principal and had him on the job for the opening of the new school year. The Superintendent has the authority to fill vacant positions if necessary between regularly scheduled Board meetings.
Brown retired five years ago as Superintendent of the Wellsville School District. At the time of his retirement he had 35 years experience, all as a Wellsville educator. He started as a grade 7 -12 history teacher. Over the span of his career he also served as Principal of McDonald Elementary, Assistant Principal of Daw Jr. High and High School Principal.
After opening the meeting the Board retired to Executive Session. Eighteen minutes later they returned to vote unanimously on a motion to appoint Brown as interim principal retroactive to August 28. Brown will be paid on a per diem basis based on a 204 day school year at $55,000 per year. Bereschek remarked "that is a $19,790 annual savings over what was previously being paid for that position".
In the mean time the job will be put up for bid in-house. If that fails to get a successful candidate the job will be opened to any qualified applicant. Brown will also be eligible to bid the job. Brown was not at the meeting yesterday.
The next regular Board meeting is Tuesday, September 14, 6 P.M., at the Garfield Elementary School.
Welcome back Jim...

I have to say, I was in school with Mr. Brown, from Kindergarten all through High School, and that position could not have gone to a better person! Welcome Back Mr. Brown!
Ok let me correct myself a little bit...... He was principal all through school!
So Helen, you're saying you're not as old as Mr. Brown? You were under his tutelage thrughout your school years. Got it...
