Ike Blows Through The Ville

Starting late yesterday afternoon and going into the evening the remnants of Hurricane Ike blew through the area. There were wind gusts of up to 60 mph that sounded like a freight train going down the street. Ike was the hurricane that hit the Galveston, TX area late last week and then swung toward the northeast after making landfall.

Compared to other areas in the county Wellsville came through the wind storm relatively unscathed. Amazingly there were only trace amounts of rain while all that was going on. There were some trees blown over, some power lines down and tree limbs scattered all over but nothing major. The lights flickered at times but we never lost power in the village. There are some areas in the county that folks are saying will be without electricity for several days.

Cruising around the village this morning I really couldn't find any major damage. Pictured above is village crews cleaning up a tree that was blocking Commerce Street near 6th when it was uprooted. They cleared up enough of it late last night to open the street and were back at first light today to finish it up. The other picture is Riverside near the memorial. This tree looses a limb every time we have a stiff breeze.

We were indeed fortunate. Maybe it has something to do with those rainbows!

I was surprised to see that Broadway Park was unscathed.

Thank the Lord & the Shade Tree Committee those old trees were taken out last year. It could have been disastrous for the folks on Broadway with all the rotted trees that were there.

Jeff & Susie Haugh have an excellent video clip on wellsvilleohio.net of some of the damage in town. It's much better than the few pictures I got. Click on where it says "Click here to view the storm damage..." to down load it.

There were some people in the village that didn't have power. In fact my power went off on Sunday evening and just came back on about 10:20 tonight (Tuesday). Seems like you didn't get all of the correct information that applied to the whole village.

Hate to tell you this but some of us folks on Broadway did indeed lose power, some of us got it back tonight, Tuesday at about 10:25pm, some of the folks on Broadway still are without power.

You're both right. I didn't do an in depth investigation on the outages. I was just going by what I saw. The only thing I noticed was that the lights in the park were out and didn't realize that it affected some of the residences. Must be that some are on different feeds. One got hit while the other didn't. Glad everyone got their power back. Sorry to mislead anyone.

old Nib, I was wondering if I could use your site to spread a little awareness? There is a growing problem in Wellsville that is not only affeecting me but also my child, and actually every citizen. The highschool kids in this town do not know the speed limit. I only bring this up because today was the last straw for me. One of them blew past me on Commerce St., while i was moving, and then slammed his brakes on to avoid hitting a small child! Things like this happen on a regular basis. Everyday I pick my son up from Garfield Elementary and I have to drive through the Indie 500 to get home. I know that a cop sits in the highschool parking lot when school lets out, but they don't speed in the parking lot. I think the police need to pay more attention to the streets, most of all Commerce St.. This is the 4th time i have seen a small child almost get hit by a highschooler since school started. It is horrible to think how easily one of these kids could run over a smaller child trying to cross the street. They pile 4-6 teenagers into one car. They are screaming out the window, talking on their cell phones, and at least going 10-15 miles over the speed limit. I know that kids need to have fun and feel free, but there is a time or place for everything. This needs to be stopped! This is what needs to be discussed at the next council meeting! We need to put an end to this before someone gets hurt or even killed. If it comes down to it I will start turning them in one by one. I don't want to see anyone in trouble but I fear for the small children that walk home alone. I couldn't relax knowing that my child was walking through a raceway. Please help me spread the word especially to anyone with a grade schooler walking home. Thank You, A Concerned Citizen and Parent

Anon - There you go. Hopefully your impassioned plea will get some one's attention. From what you're saying Commerce needs patrolling when school lets out. It could easily be done. It's just a short period of time before it clears up. Maybe a few traffic citations will help make them aware that the speed limit is 25 MPH. Endangering young pedestrians is not worth the amount of time saved by speeding off and show boating. Thank you for bringing it up. Don't be bashful. Call the mayor, the administrator, the chief or all three. Jot down license numbers and turn them in.

I don't think the word Power Outage should apply in this case.
A more accurate term might be as follows:

Statistical & Strategic Power Shutoff in Sections of
Columbiana and Other Counties, for Federal and State Funds.

A day after the winds from IKE had passed, on a clear skied and wind calm evening,
My power went off up here on the hill at about 7:30 PM

I called (my local grid manipulator) AEP and reported the outage.

After 24 hours, I again called the AEP and ask them when the power would be restored and they about floored me when they said Sunday.

The only acceptable reasons for losing power for six days on the (Grid System) in my mind is losing a (four hundred and forty thousand volt transmission line) even that should only be three to four days. A power Plant fault would be acceptable and other similar reasons.

So I called (AEP) and got them back on the phone and I said: this to them.

“Could you tell me exact ally what the problem is and where the problem is located?”

They said: “No” we can’t tell you that (they said). I then ask them can’t you pull a service ticket or repair ticket up on your computer and give me some idea of what the problem is, and she replied “no, I can’t do that”.

I said: Lady, I don’t mean to seem indelicate and I know our grid system has been in bad shape for many years, but this is not a third world country where you can manipulate electrical power like they do in Iraq.

She said: I know that and that Americans have become spoiled by having electrical power 24 / 7.

About now I’m standing straight up out of my chair and I said: What did you just say to me? That Americans are spoiled and she said: that’s right.

Now I really mad, so I just closed my statement with, the following. Well let me tell you this: It looks to me like a massive manipulation state wide is going on to be eligible for federal dollars and that if any should get sick and die from this game plan, then someone should be sent to jail for a long time.

Twenty minutes later my power was back on.

I agree, the police need to sit on streets in town, instead of picking up people on the highway. It will take a kid or adult to get hit by a car, before something is done, that's the way it is in Wellsville. If they would sit on one way streets in town, they would have a field day picking up people. Call the Councilperson in your area, or any of them, believe me you will get more satisfaction, then if you call the Mayor. This is a big problem, and Ihope no kid or anyone gets hurt.

Spark - maybe their call service center is in a third world country! Was she speaking with an accent? ;-)
