According to a Tom Giambroni article in both this morning's newspapers J.C. Amato was arrested this past Wednesday for having guns in his possession while under a felony indictment. That's a no-no. Amato is currently under indictment for murder in the killing of his wife Tonia in their home on Commerce Street in July '07. He was out on bail with one of the conditions being he stayed at his parent's home in Yellow Creek Township. That trial recently got pushed back to February '09.
While searching on a new warrant for more evidence connected with that shooting deputy sheriffs and BCI people found a shot gun, a rifle and another hand gun in young Jack's bedroom. They also found some small pipe bombs in the house. J.C. was arrested again for having weapons while under disability. I think that was one of the charges against him in the '07 case. Bail was set at $100,000 and J.C. was sent to the county jail while he waits for his preliminary hearing on these latest charges. That is scheduled for 1:00 next Tuesday in CC Municipal Court. There may be additional charges filed in connection with the pipe bombs.
While J.C. digs his hole even deeper it makes you wonder. What is his state of mind? From how I'm reading it those guns they found could have been kept anywhere else in the house and there would have been a factor of deniability. His father is known to be an enthusiastic hunter and an avid gun collector. Is J.C. arrogant, naive or what? What is he thinking?
The pipe bombs they found make this even more scarier. Surely they are illegal to possess. Giambroni reported that several were found. What's going on there? Thankfully they were found and disposed of. Wonder what Sheriff Stone is going to figure out with this?
It's no only scary. It's sad. I'm sure there will be an abundance of theories and ideas about this latest development. I'm surprised it took two days to come out.
It definitely makes you wonder...

He needs locked up. He's going to hurt someone. I think he gets his jollies by this, let daddy get me out of this again. It needs to stop.
Pipe bombs? What were they made of? Were they actually bombs? Why no description of the devices? Were they gun powder in a can?
Why are they looking for another gun? did JC ever have another 45? Did his father ever have A 45? Did they find any guns that fit that description? Why isn't any one questioning what is going on here? Is this a rush to judgment by the press?
Do you know anything about the state of mind of an individual who has lost a close family member? How about one that has lost three? He is not getting jollies from "all of this" - it is quite the contrary. How would you feel if one of those loved ones was dead at your hands? Regardless of the outcome of the investigation, JC will crucify himself many times over for the actions taken in July, 2007. Get a grip and stop hate mongering.
Anon - I'm sure sheriff deputies and BCI personnel would know the difference between canned gun powder and what they conceive to be pipe bombs. They are the experts. Why would you need a description?
No mention was made in the Giambroni article whether they found what they originally was looking for. Giambroni was reporting on a Sheriff's Office news release. I thought it was very objective and did not see any kind of judgement by the press. Nowhere did I see the reporter making any kind of mention to his personal thoughts.
I can't speak for anyone who has lost loved ones due to tragic circumstances. However I think if a loved one lost their life at my hands, whether it was accidental or not, I would not want to have anything to do with guns ever again. I would never forgive myself. If I was prohibited by law to have a gun I wouldn't want them around with a chance of being caught and loosing my freedom. This not only happened once it happened twice. If J.C. had abided by the law there wouldn't have been any guns in that house on Commerce Street and his wife would probably still be with us today.
Yea, someone is questioning what is going on here. I know of one who is trying to understand why this mess came to happen. I'm sure I'm not alone.

After reading they were looking for another 45, I wondered why. It made me think about all the guns at Dr. Amatos home. Is it possible that he brought a gun from his home to the crime scene after JC called him, and before he called the police? Just a theory. I am not assigning blame. Just food for thought.
Why are they looking for another gun? To me it doesn't make any sense that J.C. would switch guns after he admitted to shooting his wife.
How can anyone blame the media for this mess? That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.
If not for the MJ, particularly, which has kept trying to bring out the TRUTH in this debacle, this guy would probably have been set free by now.
The MJ also has since reported they are looking for the actual gun that killed Mrs. Amato, which has mysteriously disappeared. How convenient.
Also reported was that it wasn't pipe bombs but the workings for pipe bombs. What's the difference? Not somthing a person on HOUSE ARREST should have, do you think?
I know a man who is a member of the safety forces, who has lost several family members under tragic circumstances and he isn't making pipe bombs.
Just because a person loses loved ones doesn't mean he or she has to go off the deep end. There is help for such things...called counseling.
Don't try to make excuses for this guy. I'm sick of hearing them and so is most of the community.
After the last article on the 21st stating that no actual pipe bombs were found, but only the materials needed to make the pipe bombs, I,m sure that they will have some "happy Words" on tuesday so that they can let him out on bond again. Surely the people following this case are outraged.
As stated in one of the comments above the newest search warrant was an attempt to find the actual murder weapon. In yesterday's MJ Tom Giambroni reported that the bullet that killed Tonia Amato was recovered. It had her DNA on it but it was not from the .45 that J.C. claimed he had used. Giambroni reported "three or four .45s...appeared to have been seized from the home..." Giambroni went on to clarify that Sheriff Stone was mistaken in the press release that actual pipe bombs were found. What was found in J.C.'s bedroom was components for the makings of pipe bombs and this is probably why no charges have been filed on that particular aspect. It could be argued that true, the parts were found but not actual pipe bombs. Even a wannabe lawyer could argue that point. The question is, in my thinking, could these components be considered another type of weapon? What is disturbing is that the components could probably be quickly assembled into pipe bombs. From my understanding small pipe bombs can be compared to hand grenades. They can cause a lot property damage & can cause grievous injury to anyone near one exploding.
Yesterday I got three comments that I just couldn't allow. Two of them were quite lengthy and I have to commend the writers for their courage to write what they did and send it in. I sat on these a whole day considering what to do - approve or reject. Unfortunately there were too many unsubstantiated facts and personal thoughts that I felt could lead to potential legal problems. Although commenters are responsible for what they say I'm not the kind of guy that would want to get anyone in trouble. So, to another "anonymous" & 'Kid who wrote those two comments thanks. To surmise both your long comments you feel J.C. is a very troubled man from all that has happened in his life. I know of the family but J.C.'s dad is the only one I know personally. From what you told me and what I've heard from others since the death of his wife there is definite cause for concern to be weary. In Wellsville I would keep my mouth shut too. As 'Kid said Shakespeare himself couldn't have written a more tragic story.
Hopefully the judge will consider all this tomorrow and force J.C. into some kind of counseling program before he decides whether to yet again release him on bail. We'll see.

I'm not sure what I'm reading in the court records for today's proceedings. I'm confused with the bail part. The case for the newest charges was transferred to Common Pleas & bound over to the Grand Jury. Then it says "Bond set at $100,000 cash/surety (continued)". Does that mean J.C. is out of the clink on the original bail bond awaiting a Grand Jury decision? Guess I'll have to wait for Tom G. to explain it to us in the morning paper. It's beyond me.
I did notice in the Common Pleas docket that last Friday a denied motion was filed to get rid of the electronic monitor device that J.C. has to wear.
Meanwhile it seems like Sheriff Stone is getting the county two-step shuffle down pat in his short time in office. In an MJ article this morning Tom Giambroni reported Stone saying that, actually, there were both pipe bombs & bomb components found in J.C.'s bedroom. He attributed the mix-up to one officer finding them in the search and another officer doing the inventory of what was found. It was a paper error causing the confusion. Imagine that. This case continues with it's many strange twists & turns. I'm beginning to think that Prosecuting Attorney Grimshaw might want to consider a change of venue before the trial occurs.
