WHS Alumni Activities Committee

The WHS Alumni Activities Committee held their regular monthly meeting this past Monday at the Alumni Center. Committee President Kenny DeLauder presided. Toni Figley read the minutes of the previous meeting. Carmella Boyce gave the Treasurer's Report & Shirley Shanks reported on the Dinner Committee.

Members were reminded of the bake sale to be held tomorrow, Saturday, November 6. The sale will be held from 9 A.M. to 1 P.M. at the Center. Anyone with donations are asked to have their baked goods at the Center by 8:30 A.M. tomorrow. Proceeds from the sale will go toward maintenance & upkeep of the Alumni Center. You can call Carmelia Boyce at 330-532-1932 for more information. Chances on the Lottery Tree will be available at the sale.

Plans for the annual Christmas Party was announced. The dinner will be served by Connie's Corner. It will be served buffet style with the main entrees being either stuffed pork chops or Parmesan chicken. The Christmas Party will be held Monday, December 6 and the price is $11 per person. The WHS choral group Ebony & Ivory will perform musical selections for the entertainment. Reservations and ticket purchases are due by Monday, November 22 from any member of the Committee. There will be a tree trimming party Tuesday, November 23 at 6:30 P.M. All WHS alumni and friends are invited.

With more & more money being paid out for utilities and upkeep it was voted that anyone using the Center will have to pay the going rate for hall rental. Unless a prior agreement is made by the Committee there will not be any more reduced rental rates. The rates are $225 for the large Banquet Room, $75 for the Delauder Room & $275 for both. A deposit of $75 is required at the time a reservation is being made.

A nomination committee was set up for nomination and election of officers for next year. The committee is co-chaired by Carmelia Boyce & Shirley Shanks. Nominations will be voted on the monthly meeting in January and those elected will take office in February. Officers to be elected will be President, VP, Secretary, Treasurer and one Trustee.

Finally, the menu for the next "spaghetti" dinner has been switched. To raise money the Activities Committee usually serve spaghetti for their once a month dinners. The dinners are held the third Wednesday of the month at the Center. For November they are having a baked chicken dinner with parsley potatoes & salad special, instead of spaghetti. Dinners are priced at $9 for adults & $4 for children 12 & under. Next dinner is set for November 17 from 4 to 7 P.M.

Veteran's Day Observance Set

The observance of Memorial Day honoring all veterans that answered the call of duty in service of our country is steeped in tradition. The date of the holiday - November 11 - was first set in remembrance of the armistice ending World War I on the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11, 1919 as the first Armistice Day. It was a day to remember the horrors of war and honor our veterans. It was made a federal holiday in 1938 and in 1954 Congress voted to change the name to Veteran's Day.

Also steeped in years of tradition is the partnership of Wellsville's Memorial Council and the Wellsville School District to observe Veteran's Day annually. The ceremony will be held at the high school, in the Tiger's Den, on Thursday, November 11. It is set to begin at 1:50 P.M.. The ceremony is open to the public.

This year's ceremony will be spear headed by Memorial Council members Don Brown & Debbie Koffel. Veterans of the Mid-East conflict, Specialists Dan Brown & Zachary Bowling will be guests of honor. Both of these gentlemen recently returned from serving tours of duty in the Mid-East and are Wellsville area residents. Guest speaker will be USAF Tech. Sgt. Craig Williams and Rev. Derek Marotta will offer the invocation. WHS Senior Katie Hardman will lead the Pledge of Allegiance and musical selections will be performed by the high school's Ebony & Ivory choral group. The Korean War Veterans Color Guard will be posting the colors.

WHS Men Finish On A Win Streak

Last Friday night the 2010 edition of the Fighting Tigers wrapped up their season with another exciting win. The Tigers were 1&6 until they reached Week 8 of the season. Even though they had 10 returning lettermen at the start of the season they were basically a young inexperienced team. Although Coach Skinner denied they were in a rebuilding season they were a developing team.

They developed nicely, ending the season with a three game winning streak to finish the season at 4&6. From what we could see they changed up a bit capitalizing on their talent at different positions. In Week 8 they ended a winning streak with the changes and got some of those young players to start believing in themselves.

Last Friday they played host to a 5&4 Lowellville team. At one point in the 2nd Quarter they were down 22-7. They came out of the locker room in the second half and put six more points on the board. It was shortly answered by the Rockets with another touchdown and a 2-point PAT making it 30-14 in favor of Lowellville. It didn't look good for the home team.

Being down by 16 going into the 4th Quarter they never gave up. With some nice blocking Senior Chad Elliott ground out two more touchdowns for the Tigers. The last came at the 2:41 mark left in the game making the score 34-30 Wellsville. The victory was sealed with an interception by Freshman Marcus Moxley deep in Wellsville's territory. After a couple of time outs it was three taking the knee for Wellsville to wind out the clock.

Elliott had another nice night on the ground with 116 yards on 25 carries. Jake Reed finished the night with 12 passes for 194 yards and the Tigers finished the season putting another one in the win column.

Now we have to wait until next year before we see more Wellsville High School football. There's a lot talent returning and from what we've seen there's going to be some Freshmen that will be challenging for playing time next season.

Good Luck Lady Tigers

Last Thursday the WHS Lady Tiger's Volleyball team got their tickets punched to move on in tournament play. The number one seed in the ITCL lower tier defeated the upper tier Columbiana Lady Clippers 3-0 for the Div. IV District championship. The Tigers improved their record to 19&7 for the season.

Tomorrow they travel to Solon High School, up near Cleveland, to open play in the Regionals. They will face off against the 20&4 Norwalk St.Paul Lady Flyers. The Norwalk team has been in the Regionals eight times in the last nine years and it don't matter. The Lady Tigers will be across the net and the Tigers are hungry.

Good Luck Ladies... Take your "A" game, keep your heads up and be the intimidators. You earned the trip to Solon playing one match at a time. It's your time to shine one more time. You can do it. You know you can and we do too. We're behind you 100%.

Wellsville's Newest Mural

Writing about the Revitalization Committee's auction Saturday jogged my memory about the newest mural painted on Wellsville's flood wall panels. Pictured here is a man that no one in the Wellsville area needs an introduction to.

Clarence "Bevo" Francis is shown here, in the newest mural, shooting the ball in his record setting game on February 2, 1954. It was in a game against Hillsdale College. Francis played for Rio Grande College. The game was played at Hillsdale.

On the night of that game Bevo scored 113 points for Rio Grande. It was the most points ever scored in one game by any individual. It was in the days before the 3-point line was established. It's a NAIA/NCAA record that still stands today. In our opinion it's a record that will never be broken.

Mr. Francis is a Wellsville Legend and a member of more Hall-of-Fames than you can think of. He's also one very nice man and a big supporter of area athletics. The future Mrs. Francis can be seen sitting on the bench.

The painting was done by Gina Hampson of Burning Brush and sponsored by the Wellsville Revitalization Committee. It is on the marina side of the street.

"Rollin' on The River Auction" Saturday

The Wellsville Revitalization Committee's "Rollin' on The River Auction" is set for this Saturday, November 6. The auction will begin at 5:30 P.M. at Sell's Auction House located at 409 Broadway. Wellsville. It's a fund raising benefit with over 150 items as of yesterday to be put on the block. Various merchants and Village dignitaries will serve as runners during the auction. There is even a possibility of a bake sale too and a 50/50.

Some of the items to be auctioned is Fiesta ware - a vase, a pitcher and dishes. There is a new dog house donated by Monte's Structures that was Amish made. There are Cabbage patch dolls and a gently used 10' fishing boat. Eric 'hootch2" Shepherd put together an original DVD video entitled "A Hard Look Back" on historical Wellsville. There will be a lottery tree with a $100 worth of lottery tickets and much, much more. There is just too much to mention here but the Revitalization Committee promises that all items to be put up for sale are good quality items.

It promises to be a fun time and it is definitely for a good cause. Proceeds from the auction will go toward finishing & maintaining the floodwall murals and the Committee's Main Street USA project. It's for the benefit of Wellsville. So come to the auction Saturday. It's likely you'll find a treasure for a very reasonable price and you'll be helping our Village in the process.

In other Committee news it was announced that painting murals is done for the year with winter approaching. The murals have been given a fresh coat of sealer and the Pete Amato boardwalk a fresh coat of stain. The Committee is looking for any pictures anyone might have of the old Safeway Cab Company Wellsville use to have. If you have something in your collection of old photos you are asked to call 330-532-9064. They are looking for pictures of the cabs, the building the office was located in or anything relating to Safeway. Pictures will be copied and returned to the owner.

Members of the Moore family have commissioned the mural. The mural was started but not having just the right picture forced artist Gina Hampson to hold off. Correct us if we're wrong but we think the office use to be in a building along Main St. where the Eagles Club have a parking lot.

A big thank you went out to John Evan of Howland Co.,LLC located on Wick Avenue in Youngstown. They are engineers, surveyors & environmental professionals. Mr. Evan was in Wellsville not long ago and was very impressed with the murals. Deciding he wanted to be part of it, he left a check for a mural on one of the remaining panels. He left it up to the Revitalization Committee to decide what the mural will be.

The first Business Pride award is ready to be presented. It is a very unique award manufactured by Todd Lynch and the folks at Stevenson foundry. The Committee is formulating plans for a presentation ceremony and more details will be announced at a later date. The Business Pride award is part of the Main Street USA project.

Since last reporting on the Revitalization Committee new members Tonda Ross, Susan & Grant Barlow and Bill Westley Bowers have been welcomed. Mrs. Ross and husband Rick have Tonda's Place in the 4th St. Square. The Barlows recently relocated to Wellsville from Cleveland and Bowers is the owner of the antique shoppe on Main St.

At last night's meeting Committee President Candy Bangor stated she is looking forward to having the Revitalization Committee work with the Potter Players Community Theatre group in their efforts to renovate the old Liberty Theater. With interest recently renewed it's an exciting project that will benefit the whole community. See our post dated 10/30/10 and the comments for more information on the subject.

Wellsville Area Chamber of Commerce October Luncheon

Thursday - October 28: The Wellsville Area Chamber of Commerce held their October luncheon at DaLonzo's this past Thursday. Chamber President Randy Allmon presided. Paul Blevins offered benediction.

Allmon thanked everyone for their efforts for the Citizen of the Year dinner saying it was "a huge, huge success". The news that Baard is coming, announced at the dinner was great news according to Allmon. Now we need to start getting ready he continued. We need to get investors by promoting ourselves in such places as Youngstown, Cleveland and Pittsburgh. We need to get our brouchures out and get a Steering Committee together to get ready for a large influx of people. He said there is plenty of housing available. Mayor Joe Surace advised there will be at least three businesses coming, in support of the Baard project. Allmon said with over 2,000 people expected for two or three years while the plant is being built is overwhelming. Wellsville has get their heads together, get the housing ready and be prepared.

Allmon welcomed new member, Wellsville's Perkins Detailing, owned by Bill Perkins. He also announced the Chamber is planning their first trade show. It is planned for March 15, 2011. Called "A Taste by the River" it will be held at the Alumni Center. Businesses will be able to set up displays to advertise what they do. More details will be forthcoming.

The Holiday Installation Dinner will be held Thursday, December 9th at 6 P.M., at the Riverside Roadhouse. Allmon asked that he be called at 330-843-3475 if you plan to attend. The only cost will be whatever you order off the menu.

There is no luncheon planned for November due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

Parade Chairwoman Vickie McCombs announced plans are in progress for the annual Christmas Parade to held Saturday, December 11. The parade is set to begin at 6 P.M. with lining up starting at 5 P.M. down the street from the old Sky Bank using the numbers painted on the street for the All Class Reunion parade. Holly Development has donated the use of the Old Sky Bank as headquarters the night of the parade. No units will be permitted to line up in the lot around Village Hall. Since the Parade Committee has invited Santa Clause it is asked that no substitute Santas be included in any other units.

Entry forms are available at Center Pharmacy at 447 Main St. The invitation is open to anyone wishing to enter units or bands. Forms can be dropped off at Center Pharmacy or returned to McCombs in the attached envelop. Donations are being accepted to help pay for participating bands, trophies and candy for the children. J C's Wellsville Barber Shop was named Business of the Month. See our post dated 10/28/10.

New Wellsville Animal Control officer Heidi Pecorelli, pictured above with Chamber Speaker Chairman Paul Blevins, was the guest speaker. Pecorelli and husband Gary are the parents of one daughter and guardians of her niece. She is hopeful of someday operating her own kennel and grooming service. She was appointed Animal Control Officer by Wellsville Village Council in September. Pecorelli can be reached at any time at 330-383-0225.

Mary Beth Morse announced the Potter Players Community Theatre will be putting on a play December 3 through 5 entitled "Scrooged Up'. It's a comedy and Morse said it's "very, very, very funny".

Dolly Brophey thanked everyone for their votes for her for Woman of the Year saying it was special with her nephew Nicholas being named Man of the Year. Making it extra special was that 25 years ago her brother Chuck & Marge Dysert were so honored.

Allmon wrapped up the meeting saying Congressman Wilson was hoping to stop by to say hello but was unable to make it. Allmon said Mr. Baardson told him the help the Congressman, along with State Representative Linda Bolen & CC Commissioner Penny Traina, gave Baard was tremendous. Without that help they may not have been able to announce the plans to proceed with the new plant. Wilson's help was above and beyond to make it happen.
