Wellsville Catholics Commemorate Church Closing

Former members & friends pose after
prayer service
ICC members gathered for prayer
service

Former parishioners and friends of Wellsville’s Immaculate Conception Church gathered Saturday afternoon to commemorate the first year anniversary of the closing of the church.  The prayer service took place near the church at 11th & Main.

It was one year ago that Youngstown Diocese Bishop George Murry co-celebrated the last Mass said in Wellsville.  Since then a group of the former parishioners calling themselves the Committee to Save the Immaculate Conception Church have appealed the Bishop’s decision to close and lock the doors of the much beloved church.  That appeal now rests on a decision from the Catholic Congregation of Clergy at the Vatican in Rome.  In the meantime committee members continue to hold regular meeting to update the Wellsville faithful.  Meetings will resume in September when the Vatican officials return from their summer vacations.

A weekly prayer service is held every Saturday afternoon at 3:30 PM.  Since they are locked out of their own church the services are held at the First United Methodist Church at 501 Main Street in Wellsville.  The public is invited.

FYI: The Saturday Prayer Service loation will be changing from the Methodist Church to the 11th Street Playground. Pastor Kenny Malone was gracious enough to offer the church during the harsh winter months. Everyone is welcome to join us in the shade at the 11th Street playground. Just bring your own chair and perhaps a water bottle to the 30 minute service. An announcement of the new location will be in the newspaper this week. Our first prayer service was immediately after the closing Mass on July 23, 2011. We have held them every Saturday since than.

The Saturday prayer service starts at 3:30 PM. We not sure what they are doing if the Good Lord graces us with a rainy Saturday afternoon. Does the Committee have an alternative for inclement weather days?

Peace be with you. I am thinking of starting a Roman Rite Church in Wellsville. It will not answer to the higher ups in the diocese and will be more charismatic in nature. I am curious to see if this will be well received by ICC parishioners. We don't need he diocese to worship.

The ICC does have a very good back up plan...it's called personal umbrella...

The prayer service this Saturday at 3:30 pm will be relocated to the Methodist Church on 5th & Main ONLY SHOULD IT RAIN. Bring a chair, bottled water if necessary and an umbrella. The playground is usually cool under the big shade trees. It doesn't seem to rain for long here. Hopefully, there will no rain during the prayer service.
