Daw Mid. School Boys Drop 2 To Lisbon

Wednesday – January 25: The Daw Middle School Boys basketball teams had a rough afternoon this past Wednesday. Both the 7th and 8th Grade teams dropped their games to the Lisbon Junior High Blue Devils.

The 7th Grade Tigers lost their game by a score of 49-32. The Lisbon team led in all four quarters.

The 8th Grade Tigers lost their game by a score of 53-25 with the Blue Devils outscoring the Daw team in all four quarters.

Wellsville returns to action next Wednesday, February 1, when they host Crestview.

Wellsville Makes Up Cancelled Council Meeting

Tuesday – January 24: Wellsville Village Council held a make-up meeting this Tuesday evening since the regular meeting last week was canceled due to a power outage. Present at the meeting was Mayor Susan Haugh, Council members Don Brown, Rosie Goss, John Morrow and Tony Cataldo. Also attending was Legal Advisor Andy Beech, Fiscal Officer Dale Davis, Village Administrator Thom Edgell, Zoning Administrator Rick Williams and 31 others. Councilwoman Diane Dinch was excused since she was working.

Immediately after roll call Council members went into an 11 minute Executive Session to discuss “appointment of Council”. Council had 30 days from the first of the year to appoint someone to fill the unexpired term on Council that Haugh left vacant when she took the Mayor's job. Letters of application were accepted through January 12 for Council to consider for the January 17 meeting that was canceled. According to today's newspaper account there were seven applications.

Upon returning from Executive Session Councilman Tony Cataldo stated that “since Councilwoman Dinch is not here we would rather have her participate in this decision and call a special meeting at a later date”. The Mayor stated that she was prepared to cast a tie breaking vote if necessary. With Council not offering a motion to vote on Cataldo's decision Fiscal Officer Davis offered to notify anyone by e-mail or phone the date of the Special Meeting when the date is determined. Mayor Haugh advised Wednesday that meeting has been scheduled for Monday, January 30 at 1 PM.

With no appointment to the vacancy Mayor Haugh also postponed the appointment of Council committees to that later date. With no committee appointments there were no Committee Reports.

In the Public Speaking portion of the agenda former Councilman Randy Allmon took the opportunity to read a prepared statement asking for members of Council to look favorably upon his application for the vacant seat. Allmon is a former two term Council member and lost his bid for re-election in last November's General Election. Allmon was endorsed by Center Street resident Yvonne Carlson.

Former Mayor Nunzio Lombardozzi stated that Council has “got to get on with the business of the city” stating he believed the January 17 meeting could have been carried on even though there was a power outage. Lombardozzi said there was emergency lighting available and enough flash lights brought out to go on with the meeting.

Village Administrator Thom Edgell reported it has been a busy three weeks since the first of the year. There was a sewer line break at the forced main pump station located at the end of 2nd Street. The repair job was given to Allison Excavating and Edgell said “it was pleasure to watch the work in progress”. He said they were “very professional” and the job was done well. He noted that they even pressured washed mud off a mobile home that is located next to where work was done.

Edgell also reported that Village employees are working on equipment, getting it ready for spring, noting patching pot holes is just around the corner. When the scheduled Council meeting was canceled last week Edgell said he mentioned in jest that if the generator that he tried to get his first time he was Village Administrator they would have been able to continue with that meeting when the power went out. He said he was advised by the Deputy Director of the CC EMA that there is a very good chance Wellsville might be able to get a large generator that would back up power for Village Hall, the Police & Fire Departments and even the garage that is located behind Village Hall. It is being looked into and if it comes about Edgell said residents would be able to safely seek refuge & shelter at Village Hall when the power goes out. Wrapping up his report Edgell said that everyone should feel free to call him with any comments, questions or complaints. He can be called at 330-532-2524, extension 14. If not available he promised to return any calls if a voice mail is left.

Zoning Administrator Rick Williams reported “things are pretty slow right now” but wanted to remind all contractors working in the Village that it is time to renew their contracting license. They have to be renewed yearly plus anyone having work done is required to have a Zoning Permit.

The Mayor echoed Edgell's remark that it has been a busy three weeks since taking office. There was a meeting held January 17 with all concerned with the new aerobic digesters being installed at the Sewage Treatment Plant. That project is almost completed. The contractor is currently installing mixers in the digester so more waste will be treated in the treatment process. The contractor was given a punch list on what needed to be done and was given a 30 day deadline to get it completed. Haugh noted she personally sniffed a sample of the waste being treated using the new process. In her opinion the odor will be negligible compared to what it was in the past. The digesters should be fully in operation by the time warmer weather returns. Another meeting is scheduled for February 1 for an update.

Once the digesters are done the next item will be the incomplete sewage forced main project. A contract was given to Rudzik Contracting late last year to renovate the pump station at 2nd Street but they have not been given the okay to start that job. Haugh explained that there was additional work done last year on the forced main. No contract or minutes of Council approval can be found for that additional work, which was stopped once that discrepancy was discovered. Once the digester work is completed it will be necessary to determine how much grant money for sewage work is left for the forced main project. Some of that grant money includes the STAG money that was left. However any expenditures from that grant has to be pre-approved by the EPA regional office before it is committed. Haugh noted that the EPA has been apprised of everything that is going on to date.

Haugh reported that she is extremely excited with the possibility of work that is being proposed on the flood control system pumps in the lower end of town. The Fire Chief, Doug Verzella and she have been meeting with Port Authority and Army Corp of Engineer (ACE) officials. There is a strong possibility to getting those pumps down there back in operation fairly soon. Meetings have also been held with United Water in regards to getting the flood control system back in the good graces with the ACE. The Village was notified months ago by the ACE that the condition of the flood control system was unacceptable and insurance ratings would be effected if not repaired. The Wellsville flood control system was built back in the mid-1930s and maintenance was largely ignored for decades. Priority has been given to getting the system back in good condition to avoid costly hikes in Village resident's home owner insurance. Also, the cut electrical line for the flood pump at 2nd Street has been repaired and is presently being tested.

If that isn't enough in the first few weeks the Mayor reported she performed her first wedding Tuesday and offered her congratulations to the new Mister & Missus Brian Conto.

Council approved an invoice for Allison Contracting in the amount of $11,511 for the repair job on the sewage line break at 2nd Street. Two ordinances were placed on first reading. The first was for appointing Legal Counsel and its officers in certain matters and providing compensation therefore. The second was approving repairs for the Route 7 bridge at Clark Avenue being done by ODOT. Council approval is required even though it is an ODOT project.

Closing up the meeting Mayor Haugh said she is in the process of updating the Wellsville web site and building a whole new one. It will eventually include such things as ordinances and Council meeting minutes, once approved, and whole raft of information. The Wellsville web site was designed by Haugh Designs some time ago to provide a reference source for anyone or any business interested in the Village. Also the Mayor invited any contractors or companies wishing to do business with Wellsville to provide Village officials with written information on their services. The information will be kept on file for future references for emergency situations.

The meeting adjourned at 6:48 PM. As noted above the Special Council meeting will be held next Monday at 1 PM. The next scheduled Council meeting is Tuesday, February 7 at 6 PM. Both meetings will take place in Village Hall at 1200 Main St.

Wellsville Winter Reminder

We dodged the bullet last night. The forecast called for a possibility of freezing rain on top of 3 to 5" of snow. Turns out we only got snow. Not sure what the official amount was but we cleaned off 4.5" of the white stuff off the hood of our vehicles. It was enough to make a mess and have the road crews out plowing & salting.

It should be mostly gone by this time next week with high temperatures being forecasted to be in the mid-30s to 40s for the next seven days. At least if you're careful, don't make any sudden moves and go slowly you can get a little traction in snow. That ain't gonna happen on ice!

621 Main Gone

The building that use to stand at 621 Main Street in Wellsville is now history. It was torn down in late December. Owner Bill Roberts was quoted in the newspaper as saying "it had a bad roof and other problems" making it cost prohibitive to renovate.

We were told that it originally was Mortland Shoe Store. Later it was Homer Hill Jewelry & Watch Repair. The last business that used the place was Grinders Coffee Shop.

Roberts said he plans to use the lot for additional parking for the funeral home. The picture with the snow was taken today. Thanks to our friend Bob Lloyd for sharing the other two.

Buckeye Water Trustees Hold January Meeting

Thursday – January 19: The Buckeye Water District Board of Trustees held their meeting this past Thursday at Wellsville Village Hall. Present was Board President Mike Ryan and Trustees Jack Call, Cal Carney, Roy Dray, Tim O'Hara, Bob Wines and Rick Williams. Also attending was District Manager Al DeAngelis, Legal Advisor Fred Emmerling, Fiscal Officer Tony DeAngelo and Office Manager Gregg Stanley.

The Board went into an 11 minute Executive Session for pending legislation. As noted in the District Manager's Report there will be a hearing on January 25 in the 7th District Court of Appeals regarding the appeal filed by the district and OPWC on Judge Pikes latest ruling on the East Liverpool breech of contract law suit. Back in December Pike once against ruled against the water district in favor of East Liverpool. Pike ruled that “the debt service reserve of $750,064 is not protected...” That fund was issued to BWD by the USDA and is bonded. If Pike's ruling stands it could have a far reaching effect on bonds issued for such accounts. It could possibly change the way financing is done for public projects. No action was taken by the Board upon returning to the meeting.

The Treasurer's Report was accepted as submitted. Board Treasurer Bob Wines noted that 2011 wasn't the best year financially but some cost cutting measures have been taken. Trustee Jack Call noted that the water usage amount for Salineville is up according to the Operations Report. District Manager DeAngelis said there have been some water line breaks but nothing to significantly increase the amount of water used by Salineville customers. DeAngelis noted that the Elkton prison is averaging 319,000 gallons a day, the most ever used by them.

DeAngelis reported the State Auditors are currently doing the annual audit. It is expected to be completed by the end of the month. The meeting adjourned at 9:22 AM. The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 16, at 9 AM. The meeting will be held at Village Hall located in Wellsville at 1200 Main St.

Weather Cancellations

There have been two cancellations because of forecasted weather that we have been advised about:

The Wellsville Tigers vs Southern Local Basketball game is the first one. That was scheduled for tonight at home. Suspect the Homecoming Queen will be selected tomorrow if the dance is still on. No one mentioned anything about it.

The second event is the Friends of The Old Fire Station Pancake breakfast that was planned for tomorrow, Saturday morning. That was going to be held at the SOI Lodge.

Wellsville Chamber Plans 2nd Annual Trade Show

The Wellsville Area Chamber of Commerce are making plans for the 2nd Annual Trade Show. This year's show will be held on Friday, March 30 at Sell's Auction located in Wellsville at 409 Broadway. The show will be open to the public from 5 to 8 PM. There will be many added attractions with samples, a Chinese Auction and other prizes. Reservations are currently being accepted for display tables according to Chamber Trade Show Chairwoman Erin Orr. The trade show is open to all area vendors, organizations, churches and clubs. All vendors will have access starting at 3 PM on the day of the show to set up displays.

The cost to rent an 8' table with electric available is $20 per table. Table covers will be provided as part of the reservation fee. The deadline for reserving a display table is Friday, March 16. This year the Chamber is asking for all vendors to donate an item for the Chinese Auction to help defray costs and to benefit the Chamber. Auction items will be displayed at the individual tables and tickets for auction items will sold at the door.

Daw Mid. School Basketball Teams Take Four From Southern Local

The four Daw Middle School basketball teams swept their Southern Local opponents yesterday. The guys traveled out to play at Southern. According to this morning's newspapers the Daw 7th Grade boys won their game 59-36. That puts them at 9&2 on the season. The Daw 8th Grade boys won their game by a score of 39-25.

Back at home the girls were hosting the Middle School Lady Indians at Beacom Memorial. Those games are pictured here. The 7th Grade Daw Ladies handily defeated Southern by a score of 30-7. In the night cap the Daw 8th Grade Lady Tigers won 39-25 to finish the sweep.

Congratulations to all the Daw Middle School Tigers. Both teams get right back in action this afternoon playing Jackson Milton. The girls play at home. Tip-off for the 7th Grade game is scheduled for 5 PM in Beacom Memorial gym.

Wellsville's Friends of The Old Fire Station To Hold Pancake Fund Raiser

Wellsville's Friends of the Old Fire Station will be holding an all you can eat pancake breakfast this coming Saturday morning at the SOI Lodge. It's a fund raiser to help with the maintenance and renovation costs in keeping the old station in good condition.

The menu for the breakfast includes sausage, coffee, tea or milk & juice and all the pancakes you can eat. Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 & under. Breakfast will be served from 7 to 11 AM on Saturday, January 21. The SOI Lodge is located at 327 Main Street.

Committee To Save Immaculate Conception Changes Meeting Schedule

The members of the Committee to Save the Immaculate Conception Church resumed their meetings for the new year last Thursday evening, January 12, at Wellsville's SOI Lodge.

With the appeal to keep the church open now in the long term process with the Congregation of Clergy at the Vatican in Rome, news will probably be scarce for the time being. By general consensus of all those present it was decided to modify the meeting schedule to twice monthly for the winter months. Meetings will be held the first and third Thursday of the month starting tomorrow, January 19.

Meetings will remain scheduled for 6:30 PM on those Thursdays at the SOI Lodge, located at 327 Main Street in Wellsville. The SOI kitchen will be open at 6 PM preceding the meetings. The meeting schedule will be revisited in April according to Co-chairman Tom Brophey.

Prayer services are still be held each Saturday afternoon at the United First Methodist Church located at 501 Main St. The services are open to the public and begin at 3:30 PM.

Remembering When

In his book “Growing Up In Wellsville” Ron Price quoted Mock Walker. A former Village resident told us he remembered Mr. Walker saying “his dad use to own the little restaurant next to the old fire station”. We didn't know Walker but we recalled the “restaurant” next to the old fire station. It has long been closed and the building was demolished just a couple of years ago. We don't ever recall it being open.

Our good friends Bonny & Brass filled us in on a little history of the place. Bonny said it was a car hop restaurant where customers pulled in to the parking lot in the back. Then the restaurant employees would come out, take your order and bring it out to you.

Brass told us there was a house there at one time that served as a convent for the nuns when the old fire station was Wellsville's Catholic church. Later it was the office of one of the village's early dentists, Dr. Hamlin Barnes. He later moved up to the little house that still stands at the corner of 8th & Main. Before the restaurant was built it was a used car lot owned by a Mr. Coleman.

Bob Lloyd provided the picture above showing what it use to look like. We don't have a date on the picture but it was before the addition was built on the library. We tried to duplicate the angle of the first picture with one that shows what it looks like today. Thanks to all that contributed.

Daw Mid. School Girls Basketball Game Delayed

We just received word that the girl's middle school basketball games with United Local has been pushed back to a 5:30 start today due to transportation problems.

Blood Drive To Honor Lingenfelter

There will be a Red Cross blood drive in honor of Chelsea Lingerfelter tomorrow, Wedesday - January 11 at Garfield Elementary. Garfield Elementary is located at 1600 Lincoln Avenue, Wellsville. The blood drive will be held at the school from 2 PM to 7:30.

Chelsea is a 2010 graduate of Wellsville High School and is in need of a liver transplant. Blood harvested at this drive will be used to help patients all through the region. Your donation will be used to help a friend, a neighbor or possibly a loved one.

Garfield Principal Lisa Ferguson said they can use any kind of help you can afford to give at the blood drive - greeters, runners and servers. If you can assist please contact Mrs. Ferguson at the school for more information.

In addition to the blood drive there will be a benefit spaghetti dinner February 4 at the WHS Alumni Center. See our article dated January 7 below.

Dash Named Wellsville BOE President

Monday – January 9: The Wellsville Board of Education (BOE) held their annual organizational meeting and followed that with their regular monthly meeting last night in the Superintendent's Office. All five Board members were present in addition to Superintendent Rich Bereschik, District Treasurer Coleen Wickham and Garfield Principal Lisa Ferguson.

Although not new to the Wellsville BOE three members were sworn in to begin their new terms in office. Shown here from the left taking their oath of office is Mike Cook, Ed Bauer and Karen Dash. All three were unopposed in last November's General Election. District Treasurer Coleen Wickham officiated the swearing-in ceremonies.

Mrs. Dash was elected BOE President & Mr. Bauer, Vice-President, for the year 2012 by their fellow members. Tom Brophey was renamed as the Board's Legislative Liaison and Mrs. Dash announced her committee selections. Mrs. Wickham was selected to attend the annual Ohio Public Records Training session. Dash announced all meetings will be held on the third Monday of the month except for February. The February meeting will be held on Monday, February 13, to avoid conflicting with the Presidents Day holiday.

In the regular Board meeting the Treasurer's Report and payment of the bills was approved. For the month of December the District took in $540,025 and expenses were $617,496 leaving a General Fund balance of $1.54 million to begin the New Year. Mike Cook got a motion passed to have the FY 2013 Tax Budget approved as prepared by Treasurer Wickham.

Authorization for Superintendent Bereschik to hire staff and accept resignations between BOE meetings was renewed. This stipulation gives the superintendent temporary authorization to act on behalf of the BOE between regular scheduled meetings.

Pending receipt of all necessary paperwork Andrew Bobalik and Elizabeth Quick were added to the substitute teacher's list. When called on Bobalik will teach Health Education and Quick will teach General Education classes.

Several coaching positions were approved. Dave Skinner, Head Football Coach, Dave (Web) Thompson, Jr., Head Baseball Coach, Randy Thrasher, Head Boys High School Track Coach, Lonnie Fields, Head Middle School Boy's Track Coach, Cissy Wilson, Head High School Girls Track Coach, Dave “Bug” Thompson, Head Middle School Girls Track Coach and Barry Keller, Head Girls High School Softball Coach, were all given contracts. Brenda Thompson will assist her husband for Girls Middle School Track. Bug Thompson will also assist as volunteer for baseball when it doesn't conflict with his Middle School duties. A three-year contract was renewed for High School Volleyball Head Coach Dan McKinstry. Bereschik noted that McKinstry is the second all time “winningest” volleyball coach in the state. Kristen Cochran was named new Assistant Softball Coach. Also approved were several assistant coaches.

For the Legislative Update Tom Brophey reported that legislation has been passed in the State House of Representatives for pilot project to screen students for dyslexia and for the County Educational Services to provided professionally trained teachers to school districts. Changes for the much dreaded HB 136 have been announced but no actual bill language was presented for review. HB 136 is the Governor's school voucher program for expanding the charter school program, that if passed will farther take money from public education systems throughout the state. Mrs. Dash noted that over 300 school districts in the state has gone on record opposing HB 136.

For the Good News Report Superintendent Bereschik announced that the old Sterling China property behind the high school finally belongs to the district. There is a confirmed wetland at the back of the property that required assurances that the district will protect if anything is ever done back there. Bereschik reported a check was issued for $19,410 to pay for that lot and building.

Garfield Principal Lisa Ferguson reported that Garfield students collected $503 in a penny drive for United Way. The latest Home School Connection at the elementary school had a 97% participation. Garfield students are eligible for a “pint size hero” awards if they sign up anyone to donate blood at Wednesday's Red Cross blood drive. The blood drive is in honor of WHS Alumni Chelsea Lingenfelter.

Before closing the meeting Mr. B announced that January was National BOE recognition month and each Board member was presented a certificate of appreciation, suitable for framing.

The meeting adjourned at 6:46 PM. Next meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 13, at 6:30 PM in the Superintendent's Office at 929 Center Street.

Wellsville Tigers Are "Rollin On the River"

Saturday – January 7: The WHS Tigers improved their record to 5&4 on the season last night as they soundly defeated down river rival Toronto. Wellsville took a first quarter lead at 19-11 and never looked back. They built on that lead in each of the next three quarters to finish with a final score of 69-38.

Senior big man Josh Carter recorded a double-double on the night with 13 points and 17 rebounds. Sophomore Jordan Sloan had a game high of 17 points that included three treys from outside the arch. Another sophomore, Camden Douglas had 2 three-pointers for a total of 12 points. Nate Scott finished out the double digit scoring for the Orange & Black with another 12 points.

In the earlier Reserve game the Tigers trounced the visiting Red Knights 49-19.

Wellsville gets back to league play next Tuesday when the McDonald Blue Devils come visiting the Tiger's Den. Tip-off for the Junior Varsity is scheduled for 6 PM. It should be a very good game. McDonald has a new head coach and lost a slew of letter men to graduation last year. The Big Orange Run & Gun machine should be in high gear at 1 Bengal Drive come Tuesday night! The Lady Tigers get a chance first. They play McDonald Monday night at home.

Wellsville Tigers Back To 500

Friday – January 6: The Wellsville Tiger High School basketball team evened their record to 4&4 on the season. Last night they played host to the Western Reserve Blue Devils. The Tigers shut out the Blue Devils in the 1st quarter and had a 14-0 lead going into the second. Nearly a full minute was gone in the 2nd quarter before Western Reserve could get points on the board making the score 14-3. Although the Devils went on to score more points in each of the last three quarters we don't believe Wellsville ever trailed in the game. That first quarter shut out keep them on top at the end of each quarter.

Sophomore Nate Scott had a game high 15 points. Senior Josh Carter added 9 points of his own and Sophomores Seth Bradford & Jordan Sloan contributed 8 points each along with seven rebounds. Sloan also had four assists and two steals. The final score was Tigers 51-43.

The Reserves opened the action on the evening winning their match against the Blue Devils 59-24. Wellsville gets right back in it tonight when the Toronto Red Knights visit in the Tiger's Den. Reserves tip-off at 6 PM.

Benefit Spaghetti Dinner Planned For Wellsville's Chelsea Ligenfelter

Wellsville Lady Tigers Defeated By Western Reserve

Thursday – January 5: The Wellsville Lady Tigers fell to 3&5 on the year yesterday afternoon in a loss to the Lady Devils of Western Reserve. The basketball game was played in the Tiger's Den. The final was Western Reserve 67-48.

The Lady Devils are 8&1over all and are undefeated in the ITCL lower tier so far this season. Getting high points for the Wellsville squad was Mikyla Tipton with 19. Senior Rylee Livolsi had 8 points and 8 rebounds. Irene Kiser had the team's only 3-point field goal.

The Wellsville Reserves also dropped their contest to Western Reserve by a score of 39-30. It just wasn't Wellsville's day.

Wellsville returns to action taking on ITCL rival McDonald Monday afternoon, January 9, at home. The Reserves get the action started with tip-off scheduled for 6 PM.

Wellsville Sewage Forced Main Line Break Declared An Emergency

Thursday – January 5: Wellsville's much talked about forced main sewage line was Mayor Susan Haugh's first declared emergency repair job. While doing his routine morning inspections of the village's sewage pump stations yesterday Plant Manager Greg Stewart discovered a leak at the 2nd Street station. Wellsville has two pump stations that move raw sewage to the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP). One is located near the flood wall at 2nd Street and the other is at the lower end of the village. Stewart manages the STP for United Water. United Water is the contract operator for the plant. Stewart or his assistant routinely checks both of them daily.

Installed sometime during the 1950s decade the aging forced main has been a replacement project on the front burner looking for funding to become available. Line breaks have become a routine matter the last few years along the line. The line runs from the 2nd Street pump station to the STP, mostly along the riverside. Although not successful Village officials have been looking for grant funding for the past few years to replace the line. Having already been engineered it is shelf ready as soon as public works funds loosen up for such projects.

With raw sewage flowing onto the ground fixing the break was declared an emergency. Allison Contracting was called in to do the repairs. The Mayor reported the leak was located and repaired around 5 AM this morning. The line is 13 feet underground and the wet ground proved challenging while excavating. The break was located practically in the same spot where recent digging took place that left the soil already loosened. As of late this morning workmen were filling the hole back in.

Here's a Wellsville building that has stood the test of time. Our earliest recollection of this building goes back to the mid-1950s when it was a drug store. Believe it was Bloor's Drug, owned by folks from East Liverpool. Back then it looked pretty much the same as it does today in the top photo.

The second photo shows a man & young girl standing in front that were identified on the back as William Hurst & Addie Hurst Mosur. It appears that it was taken before the street was paved. We believe the third photo was taken later on in time. The street appears much smoother - maybe brick by then. We're not sure but MacGillinray Notions next door might be the same building that stands there today. The ladies in that photo were not identified. Neither of the older pictures have a date on them.

The older photos are from the archives at the River Museum. The exterior has had some changes but it's appears to be the same building.

Daw 8th Graders Win A Thriller

Last night we witnessed one of the most exciting finish of a basketball games we can recall. The Daw Middle School boys hosted the Columbiana Clippers yesterday in Beacom Memorial. Overall the guys from Columbiana looked to have a distinct height advantage on both teams. However that didn't intimidate the Tigers.

The 7th Graders were trailing at the end of the first quarter by a score of 10-5. At the end of the first half they changed that around to a 32-20 lead going into the locker room. They never trailed again and finished the game winning by 21 points. The final was Daw Middle 54-Columbiana 43.

The 8th Graders also were trailing at the end of one. They turned that into a one point lead at 18-17 at the end of the half. At the end of three quarters they still held onto a one point lead at 29-28 and then things got interesting. The Wellsville men gave the taller Columbiana boys more than they could handle. When the final buzzer rang the referee also blew his whistle. It was Wellsville 39-36 but a Tiger committed a foul on a Clipper taking a last second shot from the three point range.

With no time on the clock the young Clippers had one last chance to tie the score and send the game into overtime. All he had to do is make all three of his shots from the charity line. Young or old that is a load of pressure on anyone's shoulders. He was one of their better shooters and calmly sank his first free throw. However that look of confidence on his face turned quickly to dismay when his second shot bounced off the rim to the side of the bucket. It was game over. There was no time on the clock and no way to tie the score. It was a finish more exciting than a Hollywood thriller!

Congratulations to the Daw Middle School Tigers... The Tigers return to action next Wednesday, January 11, at United Local.

Village Businessman Thom Edgell Named Village Administrator

Tuesday – January 3: Wellsville Village Council held their first meeting of the new year Tuesday evening with a new mayor and some new council members. With Mayor Susan Haugh officiating council members present was Don Brown, John Morrow, Diane Dinch and Tony Cataldo. Also attending was Legal Advisor Andy Beech, Fiscal Officer Dale Davis, Zoning Administrator Rick Williams and Fire Chief Bill Smith. First Christian Youth Pastor Brandon Russell offered the opening prayer. With the snow & slippery conditions Councilwoman Rosie Goss was excused. Goss is recuperating from recent knee surgery.

Council agreed to postpone until the January 17 meeting to name a replacement to fill Mayor Haugh's unexpired council seat. Anyone interested in applying to fill the seat is asked to submit a letter of application to Fiscal Officer Dale Davis. The letters can be sent to Wellsville Village Hall, 1200 Main St., Wellsville, OH 43968 – Attention Mr. Dale Davis. The deadline for applying is Thursday, January 12. The Member of Council term expires December 31, 2013.

Councilman Don Brown nominated Rosie Goss for Council President Pro-tem for the year 2012. The vote was unanimous in favor of that appointment. The Pro-tem serves in the Mayor's absence and also assigns Council Committees for the year. Those Committees are expected to be announced at the January 17 meeting.

Mr. Willie Murray of 10th Street asked Council why it cost $1,088 to return Christmas decorations that were the wrong size. Mayor Haugh replied it did not cost that much to return those decorations and advised Murray he would have to direct his inquiry to the Christmas Beautification Committee when he asked what it actually did cost. The Christmas Beautification Committee is an independent group of volunteers spearheaded by Councilwoman Rosie Goss. They solicited donations for Christmas decorations. Wreathes originally ordered for Broadway Park were too large for the park's lamp posts. They had to be returned and replaced.

Although she didn't have the exact figures in front of her Mrs. Goss confirmed this morning the shipping fee to return those wreathes was no where near what Mr. Murray contended. Goss also advised that absolutely no Village funds were used for the decorations. All costs were paid with donations given to them. Mrs. Goss advised there was a restocking fee accessed on the returns but has since been told that fee will be refunded to the Committee.

Council unanimously approved the Mayor's reappointment of Dale Davis as the Village Fiscal Officer and her appointment of village businessman Mr. Thomas Edgell as the Village Administrator. This will be Edgell's second time as Village Administrator. Shown above being sworn in by Mayor Haugh following the meeting, he originally had served as former Mayor Joe Surace's administrator beginning in 2004. He resigned that position in 2005 or 2006 when he accepted the job of Director of the Columbiana County Board of Elections. Wrapping up the Mayor's Report, Haugh publicly thanked Councilwoman Rosie Goss for organizing the swearing -in ceremony for her and the Council members. That took place December 30 at Village Hall. Haugh also thanked her “moving crew” of Dave Adkins, John Morrow, Dave Butcher and her husband Jeff for all the work they have done.

The meeting adjourned at 6:10 PM. The next scheduled meeting is Tuesday, January 17, at 6 PM in Village Hall, 1200 Main St.

Office Locations Bening Changed At Welllsville Village Hall

If you have to visit Village Hall this week you might find it a bit confusing. Most of the offices are being changed around to make it more convenient for visitors. For instance once everything is done sewage customers will be able to pay their bill at the windows just inside the front door. Those wanting to go to the Zoning Office will find it straight ahead after coming in the front door. There will be no need to go searching for it down the hall.

Mayor Susan Hall said the changes are being made to make it more convenient and logical for anyone visiting Village Hall. She and her volunteer moving crew have been diligently working all week-end on the changes. For right now it may appear to be in disarray but hang in there. It's starting to come together.

Wellsville Gets Hit With Snow & Cold

Wellsville residents woke up to a coating of snow Tuesday morning. It wasn't much but with the bitter cold temperatures it was enough for most area schools to call for a two-hour delay. During the day, with temperatures barely reaching the lower twenties, that snow wasn't going anywhere unless it was moved by mankind. Accumulation was about an inch from what we saw around the village. From what we heard it was heavier just north of us. Must have been some “lake effect” stuff up that way.

It will all be gone this coming week-end with temperatures forecasted to get up near 50 degrees Friday. Pictured here is Riverside at Sixth Street late Tuesday afternoon.

Haugh Makes History In Wellsville

Friday – December 30: There were tears of joy, smiles of hope and hugs galore for well wishes as history was made yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Susan A. Haugh was sworn in as the Village's newest Mayor. Peggy Miller's little girl Susan became the first female ever elected Mayor in the history of Wellsville. According to Wellsville historian Brass Beresford, prior to Mrs. Haugh's election this past November, the highest elected female Wellsville official in the past was a President of Council several years ago. That was when Wellsville was classified as a city. Mayor Haugh is the daughter of Peggy Miller.

Mrs. Haugh was the top vote getter among four candidates running for Wellsville Mayor in the November General Election. Haugh ran as an independent and is the wife of Jeffrey T. Haugh. She is a native of Wellsville and was serving as a member of Village Council at the time of her election.

Columbiana County Sheriff Ray Stone officiated for the swearing in ceremonies that took place at Village Hall Friday afternoon. Also sworn in were newly elected Council members Don Brown, Diane Dinch and John Morrow.. Brown & Dinch have prior Council experience. Morrow is new to the Village political arena. Re-elected Councilman Tony Cataldo was not present at yesterday's swearing in ceremonies.

Councilwoman Rosie Goss was Master of Ceremonies. Canton, Ohio music teacher Sandy Larsuel offered an opening prayer and sang the song “My Grown Up Christmas List”. Mrs. Larsuel is the sister of Councilwoman Goss and was assisted by Bria Larsuel.

Mayor Haugh reported that one of her first goals is to meet with CC Port Authority Tracy Drake to determine how Wellsville can help in developing the Intermodal Park into a more active, prosperous river terminal facility. In the mean time she said she will be setting up the Mayor's office over the holiday week-end in order to be ready for the first day of her new administration when the doors open on Tuesday morning. Tuesday, January 3, will also be the first Council meeting she conducts. That meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 PM at Village Hall. She be able to use that new gavel that was gifted to her in honor of the historic occasion.

Marathon Oil Donates To Wellsville Volunteer Fire Dept.

Once again Marathon Oil provided a helping hand toward the Wellsville community. On a recent tour of the Marathon Oil terminal a $500 donation was presented to Mayor-elect Susan Haugh toward the Volunteer Fire Department.

The Wellsville Volunteer Fire Department have purchased most of the old Sterling China property with the intention of building a new Village Fire Station. When built the new, larger station will include both the regular Village station along with the volunteers, the same as it is today. The development will be done in stages and will eventually include a banquet hall, recreational facilities and a small park as funding becomes available.

Wellsville Men's Basketball At 3&4 Going Into Holiday Break

It took the all senior classmen from East Liverpool nearly three full quarters to realize that the much younger Wellsville Tigers were not going to simply hand them a win. East Liverpool started five seniors in last Thursday's basketball game in the Tiger'S Den. The Tigers had one senior and four sophomores making up their starting five. At times there were five Tiger 10th Graders on the court.

The Tigers made a game of it. At the end of one quarter they only trailed by a score of 21-18. In the second they matched the Potters point for point with 19 each. Going in the locker room at the half the Tigers were only trailing a team that came to town undefeated on the season by 3 points. In the first part of the 3rd the Tigers pulled ahead of the Potters by a slim margin a couple of times before the Blue & White woke up. Before the quarter closed out the Potters out scored Wellsville 24-13 in the third. It took them that long for all that experience to pay off.

East Liverpool held on to that margin plus one to win the game by a final of 80-65. They only out scored Wellsville by one point in the fourth. The Tigers fought to the final buzzer. Except for Senior Josh Carter they may be young playing at the Varsity level but they are competitors. They don't quit.

The Reserves also lost to East Liverpool by a score of 52-46. A couple of more minutes it may have been a different outcome in that first game.

Wellsville returns to action Thursday, January 6, when they host Western Reserve. The JVs tip-off at 6 PM.

Wellsville BOE Closes Out 2011

Monday – December 19: The Wellsville School District Board of Education met Monday evening in the Superintendents office. Present at the meeting was Board President Tom Brophey and Board members Ed Bauer, Karen Dash and Bill Miller. Also in attendance was District Superintendent Rich Bereschik, Treasurer Coleen Wickham and Garfield Principal Lisa Ferguson.

The Board approved payment of the bills and accepted the Treasurer's report as submitted. For the month of November the district had $629,275 in receipts and $618,891 in expenditures leaving a balance of $1.6 million. Wickham reported there has not been any expenditures out of the General Set-Asides and that balance remains at $719,477. Current year to date interest earnings totals $32,884. There will be a Budget Hearing open to the public on Thursday, December 29 at 10 AM in the Board Offices at 929 Center St. The budget is for Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2013.

Garfield Principal Lisa Ferguson offered kudos to Aaron Bunfill and the Garfield Elementary students for the outstanding performances at both Wellsville's Light-Up Night and the Christmas concert.

Ferguson congratulated the parents and guardians for their family support of the Garfield students. There are 273 students in the elementary grades, including the 34 preschoolers. At the recent Parent Teacher Conferences they had 239 people attend.

The Daw Middle School student of the month is 5th grader Regan Pierson, the daughter of Kara & Sam Pierson.

Karen Dash was named President Pro-Tem for the annual organizational meeting which will be held Monday, January 9, 2012, at 6 PM in the Superintendent's Office. It will be followed by the regular monthly meeting. State law requires that the organizational meeting be held by January 15. The regular monthly meeting was moved up one week because of this requirement.

The high school Music Department field trip planned for next March to Nashville was canceled. It will be replaced with an overnight trip April 13 & 14 to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.

Melissa Logan was named mentor for Jenna Vallera as a grade 3 teacher at Garfield. Nikki D'Atri and Miranda Travers was approved as Temporary Short-Hour Professionals at Daw Middle School through the end of the school year. An agreement with Youngstown State was approved for two student teachers at Garfield. Julie Lawrence will student teach kindergarten and Sara Hienerman the 1st grade. Mr. Dave Ewing was reappointed to another term on the Carnegie Public Library Board of Trustees.

The resignation of 7th Grade Girls Basketball Coach Jasmine Richardson was accepted with wishes for good luck. Richardson accepted a full time position on her other job. Coach Allen Dingey will finish the season coaching both Middle School girls teams. Volunteer coaches Robbie Long for high school wrestling, Allen Bergert for high school bowling and Barry Keller for Middle School Girls basketball were also approved.

The contract with Bricker & Eckler LLP of Columbus was renewed for legal services. A service contract for a resource officer three days a week was agreed to with the Village of Wellsville for this school year. Bereschik noted the duties will be split between Police Officers Marsha Eisenhart and Shawn Bloor. The final order of business was to approve the minimum wage rate of $7.70 per hour effective with the first of the year to be in compliance with Ohio Wage Law.

With wishes for a Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year from all the members present the meeting adjourned at 6:51 PM. The next regular meeting will follow the organizational meeting on Monday, January 9, 2012. That meeting will begin at 6 PM in the Superintendent's Office at 929 Commerce St.

"Growing Up in Wellsville" Is Hot Seller

If Wellsville had a Top 10 Book list for sales the newly released “Growing Up in Wellsville” would be at the top of the list...hands down. The book was written by Wellsville High School Class of 1949 alumni Ron Price as a memoir of his growing up years in the village. Price recalls the booming years of the 1940s & 1950s when Wellsville was a very prosperous town with the rail, pottery and steel industries all up and down the valley.

Price retired after a career with Westinghouse, Inc. His Westinghouse career took him all over the country but he never forgot his roots or lost his love for Wellsville. Although no longer a Wellsville resident his heart is still with his hometown. He presently serves as a member of the WHS Alumni Scholarship Foundation and frequently returns for visits. At the encouragement of family, friends and especially his high school classmates he put together a very enjoyable book about his younger years. The book was underwritten by the Class of 1949 and any proceeds from the book are earmarked for WHS scholarships. It was recently released by the printer, The Wooster Book Company.

Classmate Earl Betz reports that since the article in the local newspapers last Friday the phone has been ringing off the hook with calls from all over the tri-state area. According to Betz nearly 50 books have been sold so far. The books that the Wellsville Historical Society had are completely gone. Since then a new shipment has been received and distributed Monday. Books are now only available at Center Pharmacy, the Wellsville Carnegie Library and Air Waves. All three places are located on Main Street in the village. Delivery of additional books is expected next week.

The books are $20 each. Mail orders cost an additional $5 for shipping and handling. Due to the late date there are no guarantees that delivery can be made before Christmas.

Santa Gets Some Last Minute Wish Lists

For more years than we can remember the Wellsville Volunteer Firemen have given Santa a ride around town for youngsters to get in some last minute requests. This year the tradition was brought back. We rode along this past Saturday evening and just hearing some of the squeals of delight by some made the trip all worth while.

Thanks to the firemen that made this possible and a special thanks to the firemen who took time out of their busy schedules Saturday night. It really meant a lot to a lot of children.

Wellsville Council Wraps Up 2011 Meetings

Thursday – December 15: The Wellsville Village Council met in the last regular scheduled meeting of 2011 at Village Hall this morning. Due to the holidays the meeting was moved up from the original scheduled date of December 20. All Council members were present. Also present was Mayor Joe Surace, Village Administrator Jim Saracco, Fiscal Officer Dale Davis & Zoning Administrator Rick Williams.

In the Mayor's Report, Surace remarked that it has been “a wonderful eight years” and wrapping up his term in office is both a sad & happy time for him. Surace opted not to seek re-election in November's General Election. Before moving on with the meeting the Mayor thanked all the Council members, his administration and wished Mayor-elect Sue Haugh the best of luck.

For the Finance Committee Chairman Tony Cataldo reported that as of November 30 the General Fund had $23,000. The total of all funds at the end of November was $383,698 and that was before paying a December payroll.

Chairman John McMahon for the Street Committee submitted a request for preliminary plans for the Port Authority to improve 0.29 miles of existing road at that facility. Engineer John Blair of Dallis Dawson & Associates noted in the letter that since the improvement is on a Wellsville street Council's approval is required prior to proceeding. The improvements will be at the Port Authority's expense with no cost to the Village. The plans were approved.

For the Sewage Committee Chairman Randy Allmon submitted two invoices from Pusateri Excavating for work done on the forced main. One was for $12,396 for the break near Wellsville Terminals that was declared an emergency. The other was for work done on the break in the line around 2nd Street where the contractor cut an electrical line to the only flood pump up there. That invoice was for $14,997.

There was much discussion on the repair of that electrical line. Cataldo noted a deadline was set by Council for that electrical line to be repaired and that has passed. Haugh explained that the contractor thought they could use aluminum wire to repair the line and has since learned they have to replace the copper wiring with copper per the Army Corp of Engineers. At present the contractor is trying to locate a supplier for the copper wire to comply with the Corp's specifications. Councilwoman Rosie Goss agreed to another deadline to have the line repaired, taking Pusateri on good faith that every attempt is being made to get the copper. The new deadline was set for February 1, 2012. Council agreed to authorize payment of the invoices.

Under the Legislation portion of the agenda four ordinances were declared an emergency, placed on third & final reading and adopted. One ordinance was to advertise for bids for repairs to the forced main that was begun without authorization. Work had to be halted when the original specifications were altered. The second ordinance passed awards Rudzik Excavating the bid to repair the forced main pump station at 2nd Street.

The last two ordinances are “house keeping” ones according to the Fiscal Officer. One was amending the appropriations for current expenses & expenditures for 2011 to put the budget in order. The last one was to approve a temporary budget for 2012 to get the year started. The actual 2012 budget has to be submitted to the County Auditor by March 31, 2012 according to Cataldo.

Before closing the meeting thanks and good-byes were made by Allmon, Soldano & McMahon, this also being their last meeting. Allmon presented a plaque of appreciation to the Mayor. McMahon noted he was appointed to fill an unexpired term his first time on Council and won the seat on his own right to his second term. Although not returning for another term he will be available to lend a hand any time he's needed.

Swearing in ceremonies for the new Mayor and new Council members is set for December 30 at Village Hall.

Buckeye Water Board Meets

Thursday – December 15: The Board of Trustees for Buckeye Water District held their regular monthly meeting this morning at Wellsville Village Hall. All Board members were present except one. Also present was District Manager Al DeAngelis, Legal Advisor Fred Emmerling, Fiscal Officer Tony D'Angelo and Office Manager Greg Stanley.

The Board once again went into Executive Session for litigation with Attorney Emmerling. This one lasted 23 minutes with no action or comments when they returned. We suspect that it had to do with Judge Ashley Pike's ruling two days ago saying BWD had to pay East Liverpool the $4.8 million breech of contract judgement.

Pike has been dragging his feet on issuing that ruling, especially since the USDA advised that in a sense the money garnished is actually theirs. It was bank rolled for loans they issued BWD for growing the water district. BWD was preparing to run water lines to Frederick Heights before the City of East Liverpool got greedy. The St. Clair Township neighborhood doesn't have the best of water from their well systems. The township trustees have been begging, for what seems ages now, to get water lines installed for those residents. The Frederick Heights project was put on hold pending litigation.

Pike must have a short memory when he was quoted by a reporter as saying ...the court beseeches counsel to make every effort to settle on a realistic payment plan...” We recall that BWD offered East Liverpool a cool $1 million cash payment plus something like $14,000 a month for a year to partially satisfy the earlier judgment. It was offered to negotiate additional payments for the balance. East Liverpool's response was to garnish BWD assets and all their cash.

Although nothing was mentioned this morning we can only speculate how this is going to turn out. BWD has already appealed Pike's latest ruling with the 7th District Court of Appeals. Earlier talk was that by forcing them to pay the full $4.8 million judgment in one lump sum might force BWD to file for bankruptcy protection. The USDA surely doesn't want to take over a water district by foreclosing. East Liverpool may have been able to balance their city budget had they accepted that earlier payment plan. Now they'll have to wait ...even longer.

District Treasurer Bob Wines reported that the District is a little over the budget but it is not real bad. Board President Mike Ryan said the District is “in the red a little bit” and both conceded it shouldn't cause any serious problems. The Treasurer's Report was accepted as read.

Board member Gene McGaffick noted that sales was down a bit compared to this year's monthly average but year-to-date it is up compared to this time last year.

DeAngelis reported there was two large leaks in Salineville since the last meeting. One was a saddle break on the main line through that village. The saddle was one installed before Buckeye took over the Salineville water system. DeAngelis noted it was one of the less expensive ones they used that didn't have any stainless steel. The other leak was at the Salineville Sewage Treatment Plant. That line is the responsibility of the Village.

DeAngelis also noted there is a leak somewhere in Wellsville and it is suspected to be between Hibbits Mill and the main line in the village. It is not a real bad leak but water is being lost. Replacing the main line from Hibbits Mill into Wellsville was one of the projects put on the back burner as a result of East Liverpool's litigation. Plans now are being made to make a concentrated effort to isolate the leak in the near future.

For New Business Fiscal Officer Tony D'Angelo advised that under Ohio Revised Code 6119 Buckeye Water does not have to pay real estate taxes and he has spoken to County officials. Yesterday's Morning Journal listed the District being $4,656 in arrears for taxes on the Raw Water Pumping Station that is located by Little Yellow Creek. County officials agreed that the District is exempt.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:34 AM. The next regularly scheduled meeting is Thursday, January 19, 2012 at Wellsville Village Hall.

Wellsville Tigers Improve To 3&1

Tuesday – December 13: The Wellsville Tigers hosted league rival Jackson Milton Tuesday evening in the Tiger's Den. It was “Bug Ball” all night as the men in the white uniforms took off running and didn't slow down until the refs blew the whistle. Wellsville took an early lead in scoring, built it up to a nice margin and didn't stop.

The Blue Jays took the floor with a bit of a swagger to their step. Must have been left over from their football season. That swagger was a bit tarnished by the time they headed back to the bus to go home. The Tigers took a 10 point lead after one quarter, went into the locker room at the half with a 17 point lead and held onto that margin after three. Final score was Wellsville 67-46 and they say the Tigers are in a rebuilding season.

The highlight of the evening had to be Sophomore Nate Scott's game high 32. Scott had six 3-pointers to account for over half of his total. When Scott is “in the zone” his three pointers are deadly and sweet. Most of them touch nothing but net. Next to Scott's hot hand had to Senior Josh Carter taking command on the floor. We saw one Jackson Milton player hit the floor after running into Carter wishing he was wearing football pads. He thought for a moment before picking himself up. The big guy finished the night with 16 rebounds and 6 points.

The Reserves had another nice win in the opening game with a 79-47 victory over the young Jays. It was a good night for the Orange & Black.

The Tigers get back to action tomorrow night, Friday, December 16, at Leetonia. Tip-off for the Reserves against the Teddy Bears is 6 P.M.

Nominations For Best Decorated Being Sought

Wellsville Area Chamber of Commerce Dolly Brophey announced that nominations are being sought for the best Christmas decorated residence in the Wellsville area. Awards will be given to the first, second and third best decorated houses. No one who has won in the last three years will be eligible for this year's contest.

Nominators are asked to call either 330-532-1807 or 330-383-0032 to place their nomination into the judging. The deadline for nominations is Friday, December 23, according to Mrs. Bropehy.

Coulter Named 2011 Chamber Rising Star

Tuesday - December 13: Wellsville barber James R. Coulter, Jr. was named Wellsville's newest "Rising Star" at last night's Wellsville Area Chamber of Commerce Installation Dinner. Coulter who is popularly known as J.C. is the owner and master barber of the Wellsville Barber Shop located at 458 Main Street. Coulter opened the shop in 2010.

Coulter is an alumni of Southern Local and graduated from Youngstown State & Hondras College majoring in real estate and journalism. He is also president of CCI call center and is a free lance sports writer for Urban Media Today.

Since opening his shop in town Coulter has done many charitable deeds for the Wellsville community. In memory of his late friend Issac Ludwig he has given Halloween costumes to anyone in need of one for the past two years.

Eligibility for the Rising Star Award requires that the nominee be under the age of 40, in some sort of business in the Wellsville area and be actively involved in the community. Pictured above to the left of Chamber President Randy Allmon , Coulter is the winner of only the second annual award.

Wellsville Chamber Holds Installation Dinner

Tuesday – December 13: The Wellsville Area Chamber of Commerce held their annual installation dinner yesterday at the Riverside Road House. Roxanne Hall was installed as the new Recording Secretary and Chamber President Randy Allmon advised that all other officers reamain the same.

Allmon remarked that the Wellsville Area Chamber membership continues to grow. Recent new members include Chris Arnott of Nationwide Insurance, Doug Verzella of the Ups of Downs Support Group, Lyndsey Mackall, Brandon Russell & Pastor Mark Blakely of Wellsville's First Christian Church and Rental Car Mama of St. Cloud, Florida. Rental Car Mama spokesman Andy Cannata advised that they enjoy a lot of business from the Wellsville area.

Allmon gave a special thanks to the Youth Ministry members of the First Christian for all their help with painting the gazebo and most recently helping with the Christmas decorations in the 4th Street Square. A note from Larry McCombs, husband of the late Vickie McCombs, was read thanking the Chamber for remembering Vickie and dedicating the Annual Christmas Parade in her name. Vickie McCombs was a very active, long time member of the Wellsville Chamber and yearly chaired the committee for the parade.

Before getting on with dinner Chamber member Paul Blevins presented Allmon with a plaque of appreciation for his dedicated service to the Chamber. In the presentation Blevins noted that the award was decided on by he and other members and was a surprise to Allmon.

WHS Lady Tigers Drop To 1 & 3

Monday – December 12: The WHS Lady Tigers let one slip away when they hosted the Jackson Milton Lady Jays last night. Except for the two seniors in the starting line up the loss could be attributed to the lack of varsity experience. We saw a lot of forcing the ball through a host of blue jerseys, missed foul shots and not using the back board for easy lay ups.

Seniors Rilee Livolsi and Mikyla Tipton did their best. Tipton was the lead scorer for the Tigers with 28 points. Livolsi wasn't far behind with 21 of her own. Livolsi also pulled down 7 rebounds.

The Lady Tigers didn't give up and quit. They had a 69-68 lead with 2:34 left in the 4th quarter only to have it taken away in the next minute. There were several times they could have regained the lead but it seemed the bucket had a lid on it.

Final score was Jackson Milton 77-72. The loss is the third in four games for the Wellsville ladies.

The Reserves also dropped the opening game to the Lady Jays by a score of 39-31. Wellsville returns to action Thursday, December 15, at Leetonia. Tip-off for the Reserves is 6 PM.

Wellsville Volunteer Firefighters Night With Santa

Sunday - December 11: In order to make last minute arrangements with Santa for his rides around town the Wellsville Volunteers threw a party for him. They invited all the members of the department and their families. After ironing out the visit details and having a bite to eat Santa took time out to talk to the children and pass out early Christmas presents for each of them.

Before leaving to return to the North Pole Santa reminded us that he will be back next Saturday, December 17, and Monday, December 19, riding around town and Yellow Creek Township with the firemen to talk to all the children. He can only spare a couple of hours each evening from 7 to 9 PM. Santa said he and the elves are very, very busy this year but he did say he will come back on Thursday, December 22, if he missed anyone. Folks out in Yellow Creek Township are asked to call the department at 330-532-1338 to make arrangements.

All you need to do on those nights is turn on the porch light and wave the fire truck down when it gets close. Please do not let children run out into the street until one of the firemen tells you it's okay.

Christmas For The Animals Held

Sunday – December 11: “Working Together” the 4th Annual Christmas for the Animals was held yesterday in Wellsville. It took place at the Gazebo in the 4th Street Square. Mayor-elect Susan Haugh welcomed all who attended and issued a heart felt thank-you to those that put on the event and to all who made it possible. The first Christmas event for the animals in the village was started by the ladies of the Alley Cat Aide Brigade four years ago. It was the brain child of Brigade member Connie Carmichael based on a similar event she had heard about being held in Boston.

Joining forces with the Alley Cat Aide Brigade this year was the Columbiana County Humane Society, Wellsville's Animal Control and Paws-R-Riding On It. The four groups working together for the first time for the animal Christmas must have pleased Mother Nature. It was the first time in four years there were clear skies and bright sunshine for the event. The bright sunshine & shadows were brutal for picture taking but it was a beautiful day for an outdoor event. There were gifts, treats and free food given out for the animals while supplies lasted. It was all made possible through generous donations.

Another first this year was rural Wellsville residents Jeff & Sue Bennett taking pictures of the animals with Santa, with professional expertise. When asked where their shop was Sue Bennett declared “we're just winging it, we're not in the business!” Jeff Bennett noted there were 35 pets photographed. Those pictures will be available for pick-up this Thursday & Friday at Air Waves, 464 Main St.

Penelope, the pot bellied pig, had to be the top attention getter. There were lots of cute kittens and lovable dogs but Penelope elicited a lot of “OH Look!” comments. Her owner says she is quite friendly, house broken and gets along well with the two family dogs. The pig was very content nibbling on dry dog food and was very cooperative posing for pictures. “Snakey”, the colorful corn snake, had to be eligible for the most unusual prize, if prizes were given for most unusual pets.

Wellsville Historical Society Installs 2012 Officers

Tuesday – December 6: The Wellsville Historical Society held their annual Christmas dinner party last Tuesday at the River Museum. The dinner was served by Bricker's Catering. Members had a choice of stuffed pork chops or Italian chicken breast entrees.

Installation of 2012 officers followed the dinner with Historical Society President Robert “Brass” Beresford presiding. Mr. Tom Davidson was installed as President for the new year. Davidson had previously served as a Trustee. Following the swearing in of president Davidson then swore in Past President Beresford as a 1-year Trustee and Tim Gane as a 3-year Trustee.

Other officers returning in 2012 are Bonny Beresford as Vice President, Joan Davidson as Recording Secretary, Carol Smith as Corresponding Secretary, Patricia Lawrence as Treasurer, Lucille Huston as Financial Secretary and Walt Hanlon as Parliamentarian. Jeff Weekley, Robert Lloyd and Mike Lynn remain as the other Trustees.

Although closed for the season private tours of 10 or more can be arranged by calling 330-532-1018 or 330-532-3941. Wellsville Tigers Go 1&1 This Past Week-end

The WHS Tiger men had a busy week-end of basketball on the road playing two long time backyard rivals.

On Friday evening they traveled out Route 39 to take on the Southern Local Indians. The Reserves had an impressive win beating the Indians by a score of 51-28. The varsity game was a renewal of the hard played rivalry it always seems to be with the young Wellsville squad coming up short in the final minute of the game. Up until then they played right along with the Indians and for much of the game had the lead on the score board. The final was Southern 51-46.

The Tigers got back in the win column Saturday night when they traveled down the river to take on the Toronto Red Knights. We didn't make that trip but from the newspapers we see the Tigers never trailed at the end of any quarter and came home with a 79-47 victory. The Reserves put another impressive win in the books taking the first game with a 54-26 final over the Toronto Reserves.

The Tiger Varsity and Reserves are both now 2&1 on the young season. The Wellsville round ball players return to action at home on Tuesday evening, December 13, when they host ITCL rival Jackson Milton. The Reserves tip off at 6 PM.

Wellsville Village Council Change Meeting Date

With the approaching holidays Wellsville's Village Council has changed the date of their second meeting date of the month. Council normally meets the first & third Tuesday of the month.

The meeting scheduled for Tuesday, December 20, has been moved up to Thursday, December 15 at 11 AM. The meeting will take place at Wellsville Village Hall at 1200 Main St.

Santa & Wellville Volunteer Fire Dept. Team Up For Visits

Once again the members of the Wellsville Volunteer Fire Department have lined up Santa to tour the village and Yellow Creek Township to hear last minute Christmas wishes from children young and not so young. As in years past the firemen will be driving Santa around in one of the fire trucks.

Santa will be in town on Saturday, December 17, and Monday, December 19, from 7 to 9 PM each evening. If he hasn't seen everyone that want him to stop by he will return on Thursday, December 22. All that residents need to do is turn on the porch lights and watch for the fire truck with the flashing lights. When spotted come out the front door and wave. For safety reasons please do not let children go in the street and approach the truck until one of the firemen give the okay.

Residents of Yellow Creek Township are asked to call the station as soon as possible at 330-532-1338 to schedule a stop. For more information call the same number.

Daw Mid. School Boys Basketball Split Home Opener With United

Wednesday - December 7: The Daw Middle School Boys Basketball teams opened their home schedule this past Wednesday. They hosted the United Local Middle School teams in Beacom Memorial.

The 7th Grade Team had a convincing win beating their United counterparts by a score of 57-35. In the nightcap the 8th Grade men lost a cost one by a score of 29-26.

The teams came right back to host Jackson Milton Thursday night in Wellsville. According to the Morning Journal the 7th Graders defeated Jackson Milton 50-20. There was nothing reported on the 8th Grade game.

The Daw boys team return to action at home Monday night, December 12, when they host backyard rival Southern Local. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 PM for the first game.

Kung Fu Panda 2 Coming To Wellsville Library

The kind folks at the Wellsville Library are once again providing some top notch entertainment that the whole family will enjoy. This coming Wednesday afternoon, December 15, they will be showing the newly released DVD movie “Kung Fu Panda 2”. This movie was just released in the theaters on May 26. Now it will be available on DVD.

This Dream Works Pictures is fun for the whole family and kids will love it. It offers action, comedy, stellar animation and lots of visual sparkle. It's all about Po living his dream protecting the Valley of Peace. Jack Black is the voice of Po. Some of his supporting cast members are Dustin Hoffman, Jackie Chan and Angelina Jolie.

Santa Given An Excited Welcome At Wellsville Library Christmas Open House

The Wellsville Carnegie Public Library and the Friends of the Library held their annual Christmas Open House this past Monday evening. The children were entertained by the WHS Show Choir Ebony & Ivory and treated to Christmas goodies. Garfield Elementary Principal Lisa Ferguson and Miss Rachel, the Children's Librarian, read stories to the children, many of them clad in their pajamas.

Mrs. Ferguson read “The Elf on the Shelf” which is about a magical Christmas elf that is very popular at Garfield during the Christmas Season. According to the Principle no one knows where the elf is going to appear each day and it's great fun looking for him. He has magic powers and may appear anywhere in the building. No one is allowed to touch him. If they do he'll lose his magic. As pictured in the collage he magically appeared on the library's Christmas tree for the Open House Monday. Miss Rachel followed that reading the book “The Christmas Magic”.

Of course the highlight of the evening was the appearance of Santa Claus, the chief elf. From the moment he came jingling in the door he was surrounded by a crowd of children all anxious to get their wishes known. As always Santa was very obliging listening to each and everyone's hopes for Christmas. Santa gave each child a bag of treats and smaller bag of reindeer food to be spread on their lawns on Christmas Eve.

Wellsville Freshmen Fall In Season Opener

Monday - December 5: The WHS Freshmen Tigers Basketball Team opened their season this past Monday playing host to the East Liverpool Freshmen in the Tiger's Den.

It was a rough opener for the young Orange & Black. Final score was East Liverpool 65-21.

The Wellsville Freshmen return to action Monday, December 19, against Lowellville. The game will be played in the Tiger's Den with a tip-off scheduled for 5:30 PM. The starting time was moved up from the original schedule.

BWD To Purchase New Work Truck

Tuesday – December 6: The Buckeye Water District Board of Trustees held a Special Board Meeting yesterday at the Water Treatment Plant. Except for Dave Lloyd and Tim O'Hara all Board members were present along with District Manager Al DeAngelis, and Fiscal Officer Tony D'Angelo. The purpose of the meeting was to approve the purchase of a much needed work truck and to discuss pending legislation matters.

Members of the BWD Finance Committee, at an earlier meeting, approved recommending to the full board the purchase of a 2012 Ford F150 half ton truck. The vehicle will have a regular cab, a 5.2L engine with four-wheel drive and will cost $21,000. According to Asst. District Manager Todd Brown the next lowest quote was $24,000 for a 2011 truck. The money for the purchase will come from the General Operating Fund. The Board voted 7-0 to accept the Finance Committee's recommendation.

The need for the new truck came about when a 1990s model Blazer with 240,000 miles blew an engine. Prior to that the district had sold four other vintage vehicles all with over 200,000 miles that were becoming too costly to maintain.

Prior to closing the meeting the Board went into Executive Session to discuss the ongoing current litigation. Board President Mike Ryan advised there would be no decisions or announcements made as a result of the closed door session.

The BWD County Liaison Committee are scheduled to meet with the Columbiana County officials in the Engineers Office Wednesday, December 7. The next regular Board meeting is scheduled for Thursday, December 15 at Wellsville Village Hall. The meeting is scheduled for 9 AM.

Dream Fade Broadcasts Parade LIve

Saturday - December 3: The Wellsville based film production company Dream Fade had the honor of doing a first for the annual Chamber sponsored Christmas Parade this past Saturday. With WHS Sports Station play-by-play announcers Rodger Miller and Joe Surace doing the vocals, Dream Fade caught all the action for a live feed over Face Book according to Producer Terry Brown. Brown was assisted by co-producer Jeff Daugherty.

Dream Fade is in the midst of producing a full length feature movie filmed in the tri-state area. The movie will be titled Muddy Waters when released.

Santa Highlights Wellsville's Christmas Parade

Saturday - December 3: The highlight of any Chamber Christmas Parade is Santa's visit to hear all the wishes. This year was no different and the children eagerly lined up following the parade to let the jolly ole elf know their wishes.

Santa (portrayed by Joe Brown) patiently listened, posed for pictures and passed out bags of treats. Once again he brought the wonder of Christmas to their eyes.

Chamber Puts On Annual Christmas Parade

Saturday – December 3: Wellsville had their annual Christmas Parade this past Saturday. The parade is sponsored and organized by the Wellsville Area Chamber of Commerce. We believe that this year's parade was dedicated to the memory of the late Vickie Cataldo-McCombs who for many years chaired the Parade Committee for the Chamber. It was her “baby” and she did it with great aplomb.

Stepping up to fill in this year was Parade Chairwoman Sheryl Gibson and she did a very admirable job. She lined up nearly 30 units and it made for a very entertaining evening. She lined up something for everyone, young, not so young and everyone in between. Vickie would be proud.

There were trophies awarded for the best float and the next three best units. Best float trophy went to the Wellsville Church of the Nazerene Youth Group. Following them was Wellsville's First Christian Church Youth Ministries for 1st Place best unit, Wellsville's Save-A-Lot in second and third went to the Tri-State Down Syndrome Support Group Ups of Downs. This years judges were Connie Bauer, Theresa Pullie and Marge Dysert.

Free hot chocolate and cookies were provided by The Family & Community Resource Center. Executive Director & Founder Cindy Slavens and son had that covered and from what we could see were kept busy. Ed Bauer served as Master-of-Ceremonies.

Wellsville Tigers Open Season With Nail Biting Win

Friday - December 2: The WHS Tigers opened their new season at home this past Friday with nail biting win over backyard rival Beaver Local. The Tigers starting five consisted of one senior and four sophomores. Some of those underclassmen showed varsity jitters which led some fans with defeatist attitudes sitting in the stands. Beaver Local had a boat load of seniors with gobs of varsity experience. When senior Josh Carter fouled out of the game late in the fourth quarter there were five sophomores on the floor. Carter was in foul trouble late in the second quarter. It happens to players just coming out of the football season.

We told one nervous fan that he has to remember that most of those sophomores played on last year's undefeated Freshmen team. They don't get intimidated. They won't quit. They will play hard until the clock runs out and that's what they did.

With just seconds to go they had a slim lead and held on until the whistle, pulling out a 2-point victory to open the season. The final score was Wellsville 70-68. It was exciting.

The Tigers return to action Friday night out at Southern Local. The action starts at 6 PM when the Wellsville Reserves look to even their season record after dropping their opening game to the Beavers.

WHS Lady Tigers Fall To 0&2

Thursday - December 1: The Lady Tigers picked up their game a little bit Thursday night over the what they did in the first game of the season. Unfortunately they were unable to post that first one in the win column as they hosted the Beaver Local Lady Beavers. The Wellsville ladies did show that with just one game so far on the young season as they played the Beavers that they are going to be a team to be reckoned with this season.

They never gave up playing against the Red & White and nearly got the win. The final score was Beaver Local 58-53 and it was all the Lady Beavers could handle. Another minute or two might well have been a different outcome.

The Reserves posted their first win of season. They defeated the Beaver Local Reserves 41-36 in the opening game of the night.

The Wellsville Ladies return to action Thursday evening when they travel to Southern Local. Action begins at 6 PM.

On Wednesday, December 21, there will be a Lady Tigers Basketball Homecoming at the Toronto game with special recognition for the 1987 team that were one win away from winning a state championship. Head Coach Ed Swogger is still trying to find contact information on the following players on that team: Melinda Boyce, Julie Feicht, Dawn Montgomery, Maggie Boyce, Angie Pollack and Kim Halfhill. Anyone with contact information for these ladies is asked to contact Swogger.

Wellsville Holds Christmas Light-Up Night

Wellsville held their annual Christmas Light Up Night last night. Sponsored and organized by the Wellsville Area Chamber of Commerce it was held at the 4th Street Square.

The festivities were started with Chamber President Randy Allmon welcoming everyone. Invocation was offered by First Christian Pastor Mark Blakely and Ed Bauer offered some brief comments in place of Mayor Joe Surace. Surace was tied up with a family emergency and unable to attend. Bob Sell played some Christmas tunes for all those attending. Dolly Brophey read the list of names of all those memorialized on the tree's Christmas bulbs.

The highlight of the evening was the lighting of the Village Christmas tree which is adorned with strings and strings of lights and the bulbs. The tree was donated to the Village by Cope Tree Farm. Entertainment was furnished by students of Wellsville's Garfield Elememtary 2nd & 3rd Grades. They sang a selection of carols under the direction of Aaron Bunfill. The smiles on the student's faces warmed up the crowd and outshone the lights.

Following the lighting ceremonies and entertainment Santa (portrayed by Joe Brown) was on hand in the gazebo to pose for pictures with the children, young and not so young, and to pass out treats. Santa will be back as the honored guest in Wellsville's Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 3. The parade will begin at 6 PM near the Fire Station. It will come up Main Street to the square.

It's not even winter yet by the calendar. We have had some snow flakes flying in the ville before but yesteday, December 1, was the first it stuck to the ground for the new 2011-2012 Winter Season. It didn't last long but it stuck to the trees and grassy areas for a short time.

Wellsville Library To Have Family Craft Night

Lady Tigers Have Rough Start

Tujesday - November 29: The WHS Lady Tigers got their new basketball season off to a rough start. The ladies played host to the East Liverpool Lady Potters this past Tuesday and they took a thumping. Playing without seniors Courtney Cook & Irene Kiser the Wellsville team scored the first four points in the game. After that it was all East Liverpool. The final for the Varsity was Potters 62-25.

The Reserves lost the earlier game by by four points. The final in that game was East Liverpool 44-40.

The Lady Tigers play again tonight hosting the Beaver Local Lady Beavers. The action is set to begin at 6 PM when the Reserves tip-off.

WHS Basketball Team Digs In

These guys not only know how to play basketball they can plant trees too! With what is normally a day off the WHS Basketball Team, along with their coaches came out on a Sunday morning and helped plant new Cleveland Select Pear trees. The trees were put in between 4th & 5th Streets in the planters that are part of new sidewalk along Main.

With a couple of generous donations the Wellsville Tree Board was able to purchase the new trees in time to take advantage of the fall planting season. Members of the team did the digging, lugging and all the work to get them in the ground. Tim Householder provided the expertise in what had to be done. Householder is the grounds keeper for the Wellsville School District and tells us these trees won't grow much taller than 25 feet.

Tree Board member Pinky Gill stopped by to check the progress. She was so impressed she booked the team for a pizza party courtesy of Nick's Pizza. Even new Mayor-elect Susan Haugh stopped by to thank the team for their community contribution.

Hopefully those trees will be in full bloom come next spring beautifying part of the ville's business district. It was impressive seeing the teamwork with everyone pitching in to get the job done in short order. We were able to make it home for the 1 PM kick-off...

New Decorations Adorn Wellsville's Broadway Park

Getting the spirit of Christmas started in one part of town was a group of people emulating the old Village Beautification Committee. Recalling the beautiful decorations the old committee used to fill Broadway Park with years ago, Councilwoman Rosie Goss announced it would be nice to try to do that again. Saying that the park is one of the nicest areas in the village, Goss recruited fellow Councilwoman Sue Haugh and together they started to get the ball rolling a few months ago. The Wellsville Revitalization Committee donated all the proceeds from their Village Yard Sale toward that goal. The yard sale was held in September.

Along with that very generous donation and with help from other groups and individuals the informal committee was able to purchase some new wreaths and strings of lights for the antique lamp posts in the park. There was only enough to get wreaths and other Christmas decorations for the middle park this year. There was enough to get strings of lights for nearly all the light poles.

The Saturday before Thanksgiving was decoration day. Members of the Wellsville Volunteer Fire Department turned out in force along with others to put up the decorations. The "Mayor of Broadway" Jack Smith kept a watchful eye on the proceedings. He and his lovely bride Garnett furnished the decorators with hot coffee, hot chocolate and brownies. Contributing to effort the Smiths donated the poinsettias for the flower pots on either side of the big fountain.

Goss and Haugh noted that hopefully this is just the beginning in the park decorating efforts. It is hoped that in years to come more decorations can be added to what was accopmplished this year. We would like to note that the group that accomplished this year's efforts are an informal group who came together with a common goal. Not one cent of village government funds was spent on the new decorations. It is just a group of folks way of saying Happy Holidays to all of Wellsville and all of its friends.

The Wellsville Crime Watch Committee wrapped up their meetings for this year with veteran news reported Jo Ann Bobby-Gilbert presenting the program. The meeting was held at Village Hall on November 17.

Bobby-Gilbert, shown here addressing the Crime Watch members, has over 30 years experience as a “newshound” in the print media. She often jokes it is believed she has printing ink running through her veins instead of blood.

Bobby-Gilbert got her start in the newspaper business first working for the Youngstown Vindicator. She has spent time with the Columbiana Ledger and the Panhandle Press, both weekly newspapers. She has been with the Morning Journal, a local area newspaper, for 27 years. Although she did not mention it to the Crime Watch Committee she got her first taste of reporting being a member of the Beaver Local Tales staff while she was a student at Beaver Local High School.

The Morning Journal is owned and operated by Ogden News which is headquartered in Wheeling, WV. In addition to the Morning Journal, Ogden also owns East Liverpool's The Review and the Salem News. All three local papers are printed in Lisbon and they share news stories from each others beat reporters. That is why you will see the same reporters by-line in all three papers.

Ogden has 40 daily newspapers in 12 different states from Florida to Hawaii in addition to nine in Ohio that include our three local papers. The company also publishes 15 magazines which include Mother Earth News, Farm Collector and Grit to name a few. Ogden also owns the Seven Springs Ski Resort and has a major ownership in the Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Club.

Until recent personnel moves Bobby-Gilbert covered Wellsville, Salineville and everything in between. She currently covers the East Liverpool beat. She concluded her remarks saying for her reporting is not just a job. It's her life.

The Crime Watch Committee will be taking the winter months off before resuming their activities. The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 15. 2012.

Wellsville Chamber To Get Village Christmas Season Started

The Wellsville Area Chamber of Commerce will get the village's Christmas Season started off beginning Thursday evening, December 1. The annual light up night festivities will begin at 6 PM where they turn this sad looking pine tree into a bright symbol of Christmas.

Students from Garfield Elementary will be on hand to entertain with signing of some carols. The litany of those memorialized on the Christmas bulbs will be read. Santa will be on hand to hear requests and pose for pictures. Pictures with pets will be permitted. All of Thursday's activities will be held at the Gazebo in the 4th Street Square. Santa will have Christmas treats for the children.

On Saturday evening, December 3, the annual Christmas parade will be held starting a 6 PM. As of the 17th there were 28 units signed up for the parade. Lining up for the parade will begin at 5 PM. Anyone interested in being part of the parade can pick up registration forms at either Village Hall or CF Bank.

Lady Tigers To Kick-off 2011-2012 WHS Basketball Season

The Wellsville 2011-2012 Basketball season gets underway this evening in the Tiger's Den when the high school ladies host the East Liverpool Lady Potters. The action gets started at 6 PM with the Reserves.

The Lady Tigers will have six returning letter winners with four senior players among them. The returning letter winners are Irene Kiser, Maleya Fultz, Meika Dalrymple, Courtney Cook, Rilee Livolsi & Mikyla Tipton. Tipton went past the 1,000 total career points last year and is on pace to set a new Wellsville scoring record.

With Tipton and the rest of a very talented team it will be an exciting season of basketball. You won't want to miss a single game.

Wellsville's Friends of the Library To Hold Pasta Extravaganza

Stop by the high school to enjoy some delicious pasta before heading on up to the Christmas Auction or the basketball game. Sponsored by the WHS National Honor Society the Friends of the Library will be holding a pasta extravaganza this coming Friday at the Wellsville High School Auditeria. The high school is located at 1 Bengal Drive. Tickets will be placed in a drawing for a $100 cash prize.

The menu will have spaghetti and meatballs or fettuccini alfredo along with a salad, garlic bread, homemade dessert and beverage. Carry-outs will be available.

Wellsville Council Looks Toward 2012

Tuesday – November 15: Wellsville's Village Council held their first post-election meeting this past Tuesday at Village Hall. All Council members were present except Joe Soldano and fellow members voted to excuse his absence. Also present was Mayor Joe Surace, Fiscal Officer Dale Davis, Village Administrator Jim Saracco and Zoning Administrator Rick Williams.

In the Public Speaking portion of the agenda Main Street resident Sherry Allen speaking on behalf of the Daw Middle School 7th & 8th Grade Girls Basketball Teams Boosters sought Council's permission to have an unscheduled tag day on Saturday, November 19. Allen explained the boosters have a joint account with the Volleyball boosters and they are broke. Any proceeds would go toward shoes and jerseys for the girls. A motion by Councilman Allmon was carried.

Riverside resident Jack Cataldo stated “I would like to publically congratulate you Sue on your win and I wish you the best of luck”. Cataldo was addressing Councilwoman Sue Haugh on her winning the Mayor's office in last week's General Election. Cataldo was one of the three opposing candidates for that office. Haugh thanked him and expressed that she hoped he'll be at the other end of the phone when she calls him.

In the Mayor's Report, Surace added his congratulations to “Madam Mayor” and Councilmen-elect John Morrow & Don Brown who were in attendance. He wished all three the best of luck.

Surace also reported that he received a call from Mike Pusateri of Pusateri Excavating who advised new conduit has been installed for the underground electrical line to the flood pumps at 2nd Street. He has been in contact with AEP and they will have the line repaired in the “next couple of weeks”. Surace was referring to an electrical line that was damaged this past spring while the contractor was digging to repair a sewage line.

For New Business Councilman Tony Cataldo advised there is a parcel of property at 1111 Center Street that failed to sell two different times at a Sheriff's Sale. Cataldo noted that the house is fixable and suggested that the Village take it and bid it out for the highest price. It was noted it would cost the village $108 for an auditor's deed and made a motion for the solicitor to petition the court for title to the property. The motion passed.

Cataldo reminded the Mayor that a Special Council meeting will be needed next week to award the bids for the pump station.

Cataldo got a motion passed that the Village apply for a Nature Works Grant for 2012 that is due in February for playground equipment, the baseball fields or tennis courts at Hammonds Park or whatever the Property Committee comes up with.

Cataldo also got a motion passed to apply for a federally funded ODOT grant for new sidewalks and lighting within three blocks of a school. It is unsure if it will be funded in 2012. Cataldo noted it's “an enhancement grant” and the Village does have to accept it if matching funds are not available.

Cataldo also advised that the Issue I project for streets and catch basins had to be cut back for 2012. Commerce Street from 9th to 15th is still being planned but Center Street had to be cut back to only include 10th to 13th. The reason for this is the number of catch basins included and Cataldo stated “the catch basins are more important”.

Cataldo finished with a reminder that it will be necessary to increase sewage rates if not this year then next. He stated the village is not taking in enough to pay the United Water contract. Sewage Committee Chairman Randy Allmon said he would set up a meeting.

Before closing Allmon reminded everyone that the Christmas Light Up Night will be 6 PM on Thursday, December 1. Also the annual Christmas parade will begin at 6 PM Saturday, December 3.

The meeting adjourned at 6:20 PM. The next regularly schedule meeting is Tuesday, December 6, at 6 PM at Village Hall.

Wellsville Elects New Mayor & Three New Members of Council

There were tears of joy, sighs of relief, plenty of smiles and lots of hugs at the Haugh For Mayor campaign party held last night at the Wellsville Alumni Activities Center. The air was kind of tense with apprehension until a little after 8 o'clock last night when Jeff Haugh read the numbers for the first run-off. With an 80 point lead at that time things began to loosened up a little. It's amazing what can be accomplished with cell phones getting those results from a remote location.

Wellsville went to the polls yesterday. They elected a new mayor and three replacements for Council seats. Mrs. Susan Haugh took 41% of the 844 votes cast for Wellsville mayor yesterday. Mrs. Nancy Murray came in second with 30% of the vote. Haugh currently serves as a member of Wellsville Council. She is midway through her term on Council. A replacement will be named to fill her unexpired Council term. Murray is a political newcomer and is presently a part-time Village employee.

Out of three incumbents running for Wellsville Council only one was re-elected. There was a total of seven names on the ballot for Village voters to choose from to fill four spots. Tony Cataldo is the only incumbent winning re-election, getting 15.5% or 404 of the votes. Two former Council members will be returning. Don Brown garnered the most votes with 405. Diane Dinch came in third with 393 votes and political new comer John Morrow picked up the remaining spot with 376 votes. Losing in bids for re-election was Randy Allmon and John McMahon. Joe Soldano gave up his chance to be re-elected to Council and threw his hat in the ring in an unsuccessful bid for the Mayor's seat.

All the numbers quoted above have to be certified by the Board of Elections. The pictures in the collage are some of those attending the party last night. It's impressive to see the support of family, friends, cohorts and old classmates being shown for Mayor-elect Haugh last night. Mrs. Haugh is still nearly two months away from being sworn in and she has already made Wellsville history. She is the first female to ever be elected as Mayor of Wellsville.

Looking over the numbers Mayor-elect Haugh remarked the people of Wellsville have spoken. They want change.

Wellsville Signs An Agreement For Gas & Oil Drilling

A bit of good news for Wellsville.. let us rephrase that, emphasizing what we consider great news for the Village, is the recent deal Village officials made with Chesapeake Energy. At a Special Council Meeting this past Friday the Wellsville Village Council voted unanimously to authorize Fiscal Officer Dale Davis to sign any and all documents necessary for the lease transaction with Chesapeake for oil and/or gas drilling as negotiated by ALOV (Associated Land Owners of the Ohio Valley). At a meeting last Saturday in Minerva that was arranged by ALOV officials those documents were signed by Mr. Davis.

We suspected something was soon to be resolved a couple of weeks ago when we spotted a small article in the Youngstown Vindicator. It pertained to ALOV finalizing a deal with drillers. After making inquiries locally to no avail we were left still wondering about Wellsville. All we could find out at the time was that no deal had been reached.

Back in April of this year there was a Council Property Committee meeting held with a representative from a company called Evenflow Eastern explaining some details about drilling for natural gas in the Marcellus Shale. The Property Committee is chaired by Councilwoman Susan Haugh and has Rosie Goss & Randy Allmon on it.

At another Property Committee meeting on July 12 Haugh brought in ALOV to explain what they do. ALOV is a nonprofit association that formed to represent landowners in negotiating the best contract possible with drilling companies. On July 28 another Special Council Meeting was held for the purpose of authorizing the Village to join ALOV. After that meeting everything got quiet about any drilling leases for Wellsville. At that time they were talking about leases going for around $2,200 an acre.

At the Meet the Candidates Night two weeks ago candidate for Mayor, Sue Haugh dropped another hint when she sent a note apologizing for not being present, saying she was at an out of town meeting in regards of for a brighter future for Wellsville. Arriving later she told all those assembled that she couldn't disclose her reason for missing the event but that she felt she was doing her job as a Councilwoman representing Wellsville “in your best interest”. She later advised us there would be an announcement on November 5.

Not finding anything in the papers on November 6 we contacted Mayor Joe Surace and bluntly asked if Wellsville had struck a deal with Chesapeake. He confirmed that they had but didn't have all the details and referred me to Councilwoman Haugh. Surace said she was at the Saturday meeting along with Fiscal Officer Davis.

Haugh finally filled us in on the basic details. Fiscal Officer Dale Davis signed an agreement with Chesapeake as negotiated by ALOV on Saturday for over 300 acres of Village owned property. Wellsville will get $5,800 an acre plus 20% royalties once drilling production begins. Chesapeake will pay the Village a lump sum amount of $1.9 million depending on title searches coming back clean with no encumbrances on any of the parcels of land. That amount will be paid to Wellsville as soon as the the title searches are completed . They have 90 days to accomplish that.

Once drilling is started there will be 20% royalties paid on any gas or oil produced. The royalties paid will be shared with all the landowners that were part of this most recent lease deal and paid monthly. If there is oil or gas found under the land of one of other property owners, say in Carroll County, that signed this latest agreement Wellsville will get a share of those royalties. Carroll County was use just as an example. We do not know the locations or the number of landowners involve in the deal struck Saturday in Minerva. The Village has the cemetery property, Hammonds Park, the old reservoir and the old garbage dump. Part of the lease stipulates there will not be any surface drilling in either the cemetery or Hammonds Park.

We do know that this is extremely good news especially when some Village officials are considering budget cuts. Property Chairwoman Haugh and her committee are to be commended. When filling us in on the details yesterday Haugh highly praised the work and professional efforts put forth by Fiscal Officer Dale Davis and Village Legal Advisor Attorney Andy Beech.

Wellsville Tigers Bow Out Of The Play-offs

Saturday – November 5: The 2011 WHS Tiger's Football Team did something this past Saturday afternoon that no other Wellsville high school football team has done in the past ten years. They went to the first round of the Ohio High School Athletic Association play-offs. They loaded up the bus and traveled down the river to take on the Shadyside Tigers, an old Buckeye Border Conference foe, in the OHSAA Regional Quarterfinals.

The scoring didn't quite go the way we would have liked. It was a tough game for the Wellsville crew. There was 3:02 left in the second quarter before Wellsville got on the boards making the score, at that point, Shadyside 28-Wellsville 6. Shadyside was opening up some unbelievable holes and their speedy backs were burning up some real estate.

Regardless the final score being Shadyside 46-6 the hometown folks are very proud of the Wellsville team. As they did all season they never quit and conducted themselves like true sportsmen right down the line.

Congratulations and good luck to the Shadyside team. Shadyside will take on Youngstown Christian next Saturday in the Regional Semi-finals at New Philly's Woody Hayes Quaker Stadium. Youngstown Christian has a 10&1 record on the year and are seeded #3 in the region.

Wellsville Council's Finance Committee Considers 2012 Budget Cuts

Friday – November 4: Wellsville Council's Finance Committee met this past Friday with Village Fiscal Officer Dale Davis to go over the projected 2012 Village Budget. Present at the meeting was Committee Chairman Tony Cataldo, Committee Members Joe Soldano and John McMahon. Also attending was Councilwoman Susan Haugh, Village Administrator Jim Saracco and Zoning Administrator Rick Williams.

Cataldo reported that projected fund balances at the end of October will have $4,294 in the General Fund, $2,078 in the Street Fund, $2,300 in the State Highway Fund and $4,560 in the Cemetery Fund. Total of all funds is $339,311 as October 31. Davis advised these figures are not exact. His department is still in the process of balancing all accounts for the month of October, which is normal for so soon after the close of a month. Cataldo added that at the end of September the total of all funds was $402,479. The biggest expenses for October was for the operation of the Sewage Treatment Plant and payment to the contractor that is installing the new sewage digesters. With all levy monies in for the year Cataldo concluded the amounts are “bad figures for this time of the year”.

Looking to the budget for next year it was reported that it will be necessary to cut approximately $70,000 in 2012's budget. With money being spent on the various projects investment funds are nearly $150,000 less as of July 31 of this year than they were in 2010. Interest rates on investments are extremely low. Another loss in revenue will the the Local Government Funds (LGF) received. The Village received $79,575 LGF in 2010. It is projected to be $74,426 for 2011, reduced to $47,446 in 2012 and to $37,213 in 2013. Income tax revenue seems to on the decline also.

Also of major concern for the committee is the cost of employee health insurance when it comes due for renewal in March 2012. The US DOJ COPS grant expires at the end of next June. At that time the Village has to finance the fourth year per the agreement.

Wellsville Village employees currently do not have to pay for their health insurance. It is a free benefit for them. One suggestion that the Fiscal Officer proposed at a meeting this past September was to have the employees pay a share of their health insurance costs to help off set the ever increasing cost of health insurance. However, that may be a mute point if State Issue 2 is approved on the ballot next Tuesday. One of the stipulations of Senate Bill 5 is to have public employees pay a minimum of 15% of their health insurance costs. It is estimated that 15% would amount to over $38,000 in savings to the Village. To date no recommendations have been made by the Finance Committee.

Councilwoman Haugh asked Davis “As the Fiscal Officer do you see making any cuts without getting rid of employees?” Davis responded by reminding the Finance Committee members of his suggestons he put in writing to them back in September. In addition to the employee health insurance contributions he recommended eliminating named holidays and changing them to personal days off. Presently if an employee is required to work on a name holiday they are paid double time and half for working that day. By changing them to personal days employees would still receive 11 extra days off but holidays would be just another scheduled work day without the extra holiday cost bonuses.

Davis concluded that there is still some “belt tightening” that can be done without considering lay-offs noting that everyone has to share in the cost savings measures.

Cataldo adjourned the meeting asking that ways to come up with budget cuts be considered. There has to be a balanced budget proposed for 2012. Another meeting will be schedule at a later date.

Wellsville Student Body Give Football Players A Resounding "GO TIGERS!"

Before the dismissal bell rang today the Wellsville High School student body took part in a pep rally to show their support for the play-off bound Tiger football players. The Tigers finished the regular season in the number 7 spot on the Division VI - Region 21 OHSAA poll. It earned them a ticket to the first round of the play-offs in their division. It's a ticket a Wellsville football team hasn't seen in 10 years.

Tomorrow the Wellsville Orange & Black travel to Shadyside to play in that fist round of the play-offs. Their classmates assembled to wish them all the luck in the world this afternoon.

Kick off is 7 PM Saturday evening in a sea of Orange & Black at Fleming Field in Shadyside, Ohio. It will be the Wellsville Tigers vs the Shadyside Tigers.

Every penny taken in at the door goes to the annual Care & Share program. First Christian picks up the tab for the cost of the food. They keep nothing for their expenses.

WAMA Releases Community Ministerial Revival Schedule

The Wellsville Area Ministerial Association have announced details of their annual Fall Revival. This year they are calling it the “Community Ministerial Revival”. The revival involves the whole community with locations rotating to the different churches in the village and different guest ministers delivering the message. The public is invited to join in the services each evening.

The revival will begin on Sunday evening, November 13, at Wellsville's Church of the Nazerene, 1620 Maple Avenue with Pastor Darlene Zanders delivering the message. Monday, November 14, the services will be held at the First Christian Chuch located at 831 Main with Rev. Jay Nightengale. Tuesday, November 15, services will be held at the Central United Methodist Church at 1000 Main Street with Pastor Mark Blakely. The last day of the revival will be Wednesday, November 16, at the First Baptist Church, 1401 Center Street with Pastor Dirk Hall. Services will begin at 6:30 PM each evening.

Also, on Sunday evening, November 20, there will be a Community Thanksgiving Service which will be held at the Covenant Presbyterian Church located at 401 18th Street. Bishop Bill Rudder will be the guest pastor.

The public is invited to both the Community Revival and the Community Thanksgiving Services.

Tigers Going To The Play-offs

While other area schools are getting ready for basketball and wrestling the Wellsville Tigers are preparing for their first play-off game in 10 years. It will be the Tigers vs the Tigers. On Saturday the Wellsville Tigers travel down Route 7 to take on the Shadyside Tigers at Fleming Field. Game time is 7 PM.

The Wellsville team wrapped up their regular season schedule with a 30-6 win over ITCL rival Jackson Milton this past Friday. It was Senior Night. Wellsville finished the season with a 5&5 record. That win landed the Orange & Black in the number 7 spot in the final OHSAA Division VI – Region 21 poll. The top 8 teams go to the play-offs. Shadyside finished their regular season schedule with a 7&3 record winding up in the Number 2 spot in Region 21.

Tickets will be sold at the high school on Friday, November 4, from 9:30 AM to 1 PM and again from 3 to 5:30 PM. They will also be on hand Saturday from 10 AM until noon. Tickets cost $7 if you buy them ahead. The price jumps to $9 if you buy them at the game. The Wellsville Touchdown Club will be on hand selling play-off shirts in the high school office.

The Shadyside Boosters Club will be holding a tailgate party two hours before the game according to the newspapers. If you're going dress warmly. The temperature is suppose to drop down to near freezing once the sun goes down. Google maps says it takes about one hour and 14 minutes to cover the 50 miles down Route 7. Fleming Field is located on W. 38th Street in Shadyside, OH.

If you're not making the trip Joe & Roger will be broadcasting the game on the internet WHS Sports Station. That can be found at www.wellsvillealumni.com. The game will be shown on WTOV Channel 9 Sunday at noon.

Wellsville Village Council Meets

Tuesday – November 1: Wellsville Village Council held their regular bi-monthly meeting this Tuesday. Mayor Joe Surace and all members of Council were present in addition to Village Administrator Jim Saracco, Fiscal Offier Dale Davis and Village Legal Advisor Andy Beech.

In the Public Speaking portion of the agenda, Chamber of Commerce President-elect Diana Spencer, soon to be Mrs. Allmon, thanked members of Wellsville's First Christian Church for painting the gazebo. She especially thanked Pastor Mark Blakely, Youth Pastor Brandon Russell, along with Lyndsey Mackall, Joshua Blakely and Lori Harmon.

Connie Carmichael of the Alley Cat Aide Brigade Committee informed Council that the 4th Annual Christmas for the Animals will be held at the 4th Street Square gazebo on Sunday, December 4. More information will be forthcoming in the near future.

Dave Butcher of 12th Street advised council he would like to volunteer his time doing custodial work around Village Hall.

For Administration Reports, Jim Saracco advised he “got a call from Mr. Pusateri. Said he contacted AEP and they will by the mid of this month repair the electrical problem up at 2nd Street”. Saracco was referring to an electrical line to the last remaining flood pump at that location. This past spring workers damaged the line while in the process of repairing a break in the forced main sewage line. Council set a November 18 deadline to have the line repaired at the last meeting. With the deadline was the threat of getting the line repaired and then billing the company for the work.

For the Mayor's Report, Surace reported that the sidewalk project along Main Street should be completed by Wednesday or Thursday. Surace added his thanks to members of First Christian saying they have been very helpful to the Village with all they have undertaken. After services one Sunday this past summer they donned work clothes and did some street cleaning in the village. The Mayor also wished “all the luck in the world” to all the candidates in next Tuesday's General Election.

Council approved a motion made by Water, Sewer & Refuse Committee Chairman Randy Allmon to authorize the Village Administrator to advertise for bids for Pump Station #1 Improvements. A bid is in today's (November 3) Morning Journal doing just that. Previous bids for the pump station and the whole forced main line exceeded bid estimates. At the last Council meeting in October Saracco reported that the project has been put on the “back burner”. There will be a Pre-bid Meeting at 11 AM November 10 at Village Hall on the new bid. The bidding deadline is November 18.

Finance Committee Chairman Tony Cataldo announced there will be a meeting Friday, November 4 at 12 noon to work on the 2012 Village Budget. Cataldo requested that the Fiscal Officer have copies of the budget available for all Council members along with estimates of how much will have to be cut out of the budget next year.

Personnel Committee Chairman Joe Soldano announced that Labcorp will be closing their office on St. Clair on November 23. Employees that haven't gotten their blood tests for the new insurance carrier will need to find another source for their tests. Soldano noted he didn't think that East Liverpool City Hospital was an approved site for the required tests. Dale Davis advised they could get a list of approved clinics. Councilman Allmon added that Cemetery Caretaker Mike Lombardozzi is resigning and he didn't know what “we're going to do about it' adding that no one has been trained for the job. Allmon feels who ever replaces Lombardozzi would need at least two weeks training, adding the jobs are no longer put out on bids. Davis noted there has been no written resignations received. Surace suggested the resignation “is coming around the corner” and suggested a meeting be held to at least get someone trained up there.

Claims, Rules & Ordinance Chairwoman Rosie Goss inquired if a thank you was sent to the Chester VFW for donating $500 for new tasers. Surace said he believes the Police Department got two new tasers and a thank you note will be sent “first thing in the morning”.

For New Business Councilman John McMahon offered congratulations to the WHS Football Team for making the play-offs for the first time in 10 years. McMahon noted his grandson Jeff “Cheeseburger” McMahon is a member of that football squad.

Council chose to ignore taking any action on an Ohio Division of Liquor Control transfer permit for a C1 license. The transfer was from Robin Brandt to Kiris Murray for 100% ownership of stock for the For Your Convenience store on 17th Street. Davis advised that the police did a background check on Murray and found nothing to prevent the transfer of the permit. Councilwoman Haugh questioned Council's options saying everybody knows what's being done. She added she was not comfortable with the transfer. Legal Advisor Beech advised that Council does not have to approve it. They can ignore it and it will automatically go into effect. Later down the road Council can't have fingers pointing at them if there are problems. The convenience store is located next door to Garfield Elemetary.

Council went into a 30 minute Executive Session to discuss purchasing of real property, drilling leases and legal advice on both subjects. When making the motion Haugh invited Saracco, Beech and Davis to join them. When they returned Surace announced there will be a Special Council meeting Friday, November 4 at 1 PM. Nothing else was said about what was discussed behind closed doors.

The meeting adjourned at 6:47 PM. The next regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 15 at 6 PM.

Wellsville Seniors Recognized

Eleven WHS Seniors and their folks were recognized before the start of last week's Wellsville vs. Jackson Milton football game. It was the last home game of the 2011 season. It was Senior Night.

Introduced to the home crowd was band member Seth Dinch, cheerleaders Taylor Hardman, Dominique Jackson, Kathryn Medeiros and Kaitlyn Stokes. There were six members of the football team playing their last home game at Nicholson Stadium. They were Josh Carter, Nick DaLonzo, Vance Thomas, Jeff McMahon, Jake Reed and Jeremy Drysdale.

Congratulations and good luck to all the seniors. You were outstanding representing the Orange & Black and Wellsville is proud of each one of you.

Wellsville Voters Will Decide Mayor & Council Races Next Tuesday

In just six days Wellsville voters get their chance to voice their opinions at the polls. The November General Election is next Tuesday, November 8. It's the voters chance to decide who will run our Village.

Wellsville voters will be selecting a new mayor to replace Joe Surace. Surace completes his second term at the end of the year and has decided not to run for a third term. There are four candidates on the ballot running for the Mayor's Office. They are Susan Haugh, Nancy Murray, Jack Cataldo and Joe Soldano Jr. Haugh and Soldano are currently serving as members of Council. Murray is a political new comer and Cataldo has previous Council experience.

There are four seats on Village Council the voters will be considering on who should represent their voice in Village government. Political newcomers John Morrow and Tonda Ross are two new names on this year's ballot. Former Council members Diane Dinch and Don Brown are also candidates for one of those four seats. Incumbents John McMahon, Randy Allmon and Tony Cataldo filed for re-election.

There are three members for the Wellsville Board of Education who's term will expire December 31 and three unopposed candidates on the ballot. They are Karen Dash, Mike Cook and Ed Bauer.

There are three state issues on the Wellsville ballot and one Village issue on proposed electrical aggregation. One of the state issues is whether to approve the controversial Ohio Senate Bill 5 commonly called the “union busting issue”. Wellsville voters have a say in whether to approve that bill by voting on Issue 2.

We've decided not to endorse any particular candidate or issue leaving that decision up to the voters. All the candidates are registered voters and we're happy with that.

The deadline to register for voting has passed. However if you're unsure you're registered or where to go vote check the CC Board of Election web site. All that information is on their easy to navigate web sit plus you can pull up a sample ballot for your precinct. You can start at www.columbianacounty.org. The polls open at 6:30 AM next Tuesday and remain open until 7:30 PM.

Being the last match for 2011 Wellsville High School Volleyball team we are featuring the two seniors on this year's squad in our pictures. They are # 1 Noelle Amato and #2 Rilee Livolsi. Their high school volleyball careers came to a disappointing conclusion in the NEO Division IV District Semi-final. It was played in Lisbon David Anderson's Gym A.

There will be no repeat of the 2010 Lady Tiger accomplishments. Last year they won the district and went on to play one last game in Solon, Ohio. The Lisbon Lady Devils defeated the Lady Tigers 3 sets to one Tuesday evening to bring the Wellsville season to an end. It was an upset loss for the whole team. They handily defeated Lisbon in the regular season in a tri-match and the number one seeded Lady Tigers weren't expecting any problems this time. Unfortunately the Lisbon girls didn't buy it.

In spite of the upset loss it was a great season for the Lady Tigers. They finished with a 20&5 record on the year.

Congratulations on the fine season Ladies. We're proud of you...

Immaculate Conception Members Move Saturday Prayer Services Indoors

Members of the Save Immaculate Conception Church Committee met Thursday evening at the Wellsville SOI Lodge. It was their regular weekly meeting held each Thursday for updates and announcements.

It was announced that there will be a change of location and time for the weekly Saturday afternoon prayer sessions. They have held the weekly sessions each Saturday afternoon since the Youngstown Diocese officials closed the Wellsville parish. Fellow Christians at the the United Methodist Churches in the village are making the First United Methodist church available for the Catholics to use. Co-chairman Tom Brophey said with the cold weather fast approaching it was decided to take United Methodist Pastor Ken Malone up on his offer.

First United Methodist is located at 501 Main Street. The time for the prayer service has been moved up to 3:30 PM and Brophey stated the time and location will remain the same each Saturday afternoon. Those attending the prayer sessions are to enter through the front door on the Main Street side.

It was also announced that Youngstown Diocese Bishop George Murry is expected to be at St. Ann's Saturday Mass this week.

Committee members are making plans for an Immaculate Conception Parish Christmas Party to be held Saturday, December 10, at the SOI Lodge. Plans are incomplete at present. For more information or to make reservations those interested are asked to contact Dolly Brophey at 330-532-1807.

Best wishes and prayers was offered for Chuck Amato, Nick DaLonzo, Joe Soldano Sr. and Theresa Betz.

Finally it was announced that the heat at the Immaculate Conception Church has been turned on to keep the building warm during the winter months. The gas and electricity had been shut off a few months ago. Members of the Committee were concerned about structural damage to both the building and the organ with freezing temperatures. Parishioners are still locked out of the church that many of their parents sacrificed over the years to finance and build. Relief from worry was expressed that at least the building and what contents remain won't be damaged with no heat.

The appeal to reactivate the Wellsville Catholic parish have been filed through Canon lawyers in Rome. Results of that appeal are still pending.

The Committee to Save Immaculate Conception Church meets each Thursday afternoon to keep the concerned parishioners informed of any updates or other announcements. They meet at the Wellsville SOI Lodge located at 327 Main St. The SOI snack bar is opened at 5:30 and the meeting starts at 6:30 PM.

WHS 2nd Annual Halloween Concert

To the delight of all that attended the WHS Music Department had their 2nd Annual Halloween Concert this past Monday evening. Musical numbers were performed by the members of the Marching Band, the Concert Choir and Ebony & Ivory. The performers were directed by Ms. Emily Barlow and accompanied by Mr. Aaron Bunfill on the piano. Prizes were given for best costumes. Admission was free if you wore a costume.

It was a very entertaining and fun concert. Congratulations to all that performed, the stage help and everyone else that made it possible. It was a job well done...

Dave "Superman" Butcher was giving barber J C Coulter a hand yesterday afternoon passing out free Halloween costumes in front of the Wellsville Barber Shop. J C tells us they went pretty fast this year and that there were only a couple left when got this picture yesterday. This is the second year in a row that Coulter's treat in honor of Halloween has been giving out costumes to whoever could use one.

J C is one of our heros too but that Butcher...he's the man!

Wellsville's Trick or Treat hours are from 5:30 to 7 PM on Monday, October 31.

Wellsville Tigers Have Shot At Play-offs

The Wellsville Tiger Football Team has a shot of making the play-offs with a win against Jackson Milton this Friday. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 PM, October 28, at Nicholson Stadium. There are other variables involved besides just a win Friday night. With their exciting win over visiting Leetonia last week the Tigers are now 4&5 on the year and 3&3 in league play. Jackson Milton is 3&6 on the year and 1&5 in the league.

Wellsville is in State Division VI – Region 21. They are ranked number 8 this week in the OHSAA Computer Ratings in their division. The top eight teams are invited to the play-offs. Berlin Center's Western Reserve is Number 1 in the division and just about every other rating system in the state for their class. They are undefeated on the year but you never know which way a football is going to bounce! As the former Steeler coach Chuck Knoll use to say “on any given Sunday...”

Friday is also Senior Night. Pictures shown above are from last week's game against Leetonia.

WHS Senior Rilee Livolsi Named Fall Homecoming Queen

Wellsville High School Senior Rilee Livolsi was crowned the 2011 Fall Homecoming Queen at half time of last Friday's football game at Nicholson Stadium. Queen Leah Kelly, the 2010 queen, had the honor of crowning the newly named queen. Livolsi is the daughter of Jerri & Jeff Livolsi.

Queen Rilee and her court reigned over the homecoming dance that was held last Saturday. The members of her court included Mikyla Tipton, Kayla Wolfe, Taylor Hardman, Ashley Raffa and Irene Kiser. The theme for the 2011 Homecoming was Candyland featuring brightly colored decorations.

In addition to the Homecoming ceremonies last Friday was also “Pink Day” in the school system recognizing October being Find A Cure For Cancer month. As shown in the pictures in the collage pink was the color of the day.

This coming Friday, October 28, will be Senior Night. Those ceremonies are usually held prior to the start of the 7 PM game.

Wellsville Area Chamber Honors "Community Stars"

The Wellsville Area Chamber of Commerce held their annual Citizens of the Year Dinner this past Wednesday evening. Chamber President Randy Allmon served as Master of Ceremonies. The welcome was given by Columbiana County Commissioner Penny Traina and Pastor Dirk Hall offered the invocation.

Special comments were made by Western Reserve Building & Construction Trades Council President Don Crane and State Senator Jason Wilson. Wellsville Mayor Joseph Surace was recognized prior to the dinner. Surace is finishing up his second consecutive term serving as mayor of the Village. He chose not to run for another term.

Key note speaker was Attorney Jesse Zirillo. Zirillo is an East Liverpool native and specializes in title work for Chesapeake Energy. He spoke on the abundance of natural gas in the region with enough to keep drillers busy for the next five to ten decades. Zirillo surmised the economic growth potential in the region made possible with the natural gas is exciting.

Center Pharmacy was voted Business of the Year. Located at 447 Main Street, Center Pharmacy is owned and operated by Joe Amaismeier & Jim Koopman. Other nominations for the award was Holly Development and J.C.'s Wellsville Barber Shop. The Business of the Year award was announced by Chamber President-elect Diane Spencer.

Pinky Checkler Gill was elected Woman of the Year. Pinky owns Nick's Pizza which was started by her father and has been operated by the family for 57 years. Gill was introduced by Mrs. Dolly Brophey. Garfield Elementary Principal Liza Ferguson and Mrs. Bonny Beresford were the other nominees for the honor.

Named Man of the Year was Wellsville Village Administrator Jim Saracco. Saracco is a Korean War veteran and lifetime Wellsville resident. A Titanium Metals retiree he has served as both Village Administrator and before that as Zoning Administrator for the past seven and half years all together. Saracco's selection was announced by Attorney Nick Amato. Veteran's Memorial Council Member Dale Barnhart and Wellsville Board of Education President Tom Brophey were also in the running for this year's Man of the Year.

The dinner was held at the Wellsville Alumni Center. Dinner was catered by Connie's Corner of Chester, WV. The Wellsville Area Chamber will hold their monthly luncheon this coming Thursday, October 27, at Tonda's Resturant. Tonda's is located on the 4th Street Square. Luncheon time is noon.

New Wellsville HIgh School Sign Adds Colorful Touch

In their closing remarks at last week's meeting a few of the Wellsville Board of Education members expressed their delight in the new computer operated LED sign recently erected at the High School. Shown here, the sign was purchased from a Florida company and installed by Wellsville School District maintenance personnel members Joe Traina and Tim Householder. The sign is an attention getter and the scrolling messages can be changed remotely from a computer. It also shows the time and temperature. Located facing Bengal Drive the sign can be seen all the way down Clark Avenue.

Wellsville BOE Opposes Changes In Voucher Students Legislation

In spite of some Board members expressing that they “were truly disappointed” they “didn't have anyone present from the press” the Wellsville Board of Education emphatically and unanimously voted to adopt a resolution opposing Ohio House of Representatives House Bill 136. The Wellsville Board took that action at their monthly BOE meeting a week ago Monday, October 17. HB-136 is legislation being encouraged by Ohio Gov. Kasich to expand grant vouchers to any public school student in Ohio.

School Superintendent Rich Bereschik stated there has been another call to action for everyone to get in touch with their State Legislators asking that they oppose passage of this particular bill. Bereschik added the changes goes against public education. He added the bill is being opposed by the Ohio Education Association, the Ohio School Boards Association and list of other professional education organizations.

New to the voucher program is the inclusion of private schools such as cyber schools. It doesn't have to be “brick & mortar” private schools. HB-136 would significantly expand the availability of vouchers for students to attend private or parochial schools. It would grant vouchers to any public school student in Ohio provided their family income is $95,000 or less, without regard to the academic performance of the public school that student is assigned to attend. The bill would also cover students already enrolled in private or parochial schools.

State provided funding to the Wellsville school district is currently $6,900 per student for the academic school year. That is the amount the Wellsville School District's annual operating budget would be reduced for each voucher student. The proposed legislation would take dollars directly from already cash strapped local public school districts. “It will be a big blow to public education if it goes through” according to Bereschik. The resolution passed by the Wellsville BOE expresses their opposition to any legislation that would transfer public dollars to support private education. They directed the Treasurer to forward a copy of the resolution to members of the Ohio House of Representatives.

The next scheduled Wellsville BOE meeting is Monday, November 21, in the Superintendent's Office. That office is located at 929 Center St.

Voters Invited To Meet The Wellsville Candidates

Come Wednesday evening a group of “concerned citizens” will be conducting Wellsville's own Meet The Candidates Night. There will be no need to travel all the way over to Lisbon and having to sit listening to candidates from all over the county.

Kick-off for the Wellsville event is set for 7 PM at Village Hall located at 1200 Main St. In this year's General Election, on November 8, Village voters will be voting on a new mayor and electing four candidates for Village Council.

Running for mayor is Susan Haugh, Nancy Murray, Jack Cataldo and Joe Soldano. There are seven candidates running for four Council seats. They are Tonda Ross, John Morrow, Diane Dinch, John McMahon, Don Brown, Randy Allmon and Tony Caltaldo. Ross and Morrow are political new comers. Dinch and Brown have had previous Council experience. McMahon, Allmon and Cataldo are currently serving on Council.

We have been told that all four candidates for mayor will be there and six out of the seven candidates for Council have committed to attending. School Board of Education member Ed Bauer will act as the narrator/master-of-ceremony.

The event is open to the public and free of admission. The group of “concerned citizens” organizing the event are bi-partisan individual citizens and they do not represent any particular political party, committee, club or organization.

Halloween Party At Wellsville Library

On Wednesday afternoon, October 26, there will be a Halloween Party for Middle School students in grades 4 through 6 at the Wellsville Public Library. Costumes are optional. There will be games and treats.

Matt's Bash #3 Was A Howling Success

Saturday, October 15, was the 3rd Annual Dash For Mat's Bash in Wellsville. The annual event is a fund raiser to support scholarships given in loving memory of Mathugh Johnston. Mathugh was a 15 year old lad who succumbed to cancer after a long, hard fought battle. In addition to Mathugh, Bob Grimm, Lindsey Salsberry and Betty Prince were also remembered.

Betty Prince is a new addition to those on the list being remembered. She died of cancer nine years ago. Betty was a much loved music teacher in the Wellsville School District. She was born and raised in Kentucky and met the love of her life in college. He was a Wellsville guy and they came back this way after school. In telling her story at the “Bash” Dick Prince told us that the entertaining WHS choir Ebony & Ivory was Betty's brain child.

According to event organizers there was nearly 500 registered for this year's Bash. Around 100 of those were children, many of them in Halloween costumes. The over-all winner of the 1.5 mile long dash was Tommy McNear with a time of 8 minutes – 12 seconds. The Benwood VFD of West Virginia once again won the Fireman's Relay. The Wellsville Volunteers might have had a chance except they had one dummy carrying another dummy in the last leg of their race!

We could go on & on but we're going to let the pictures tell the rest of the story. Needless to say it was a smashing success. It looks as if everyone had a thoroughly good time on a great fall afternoon.

Kudos to Annie, Tim & Rob Long and all the others that lined up the sponsors and organized the event. Even though you guys once again drew the wrong number for my 42” flat screen television you all did good!

Mother Nature's Artistic Side???

We were watching a Middle School volleyball tournament match this past Tuesday afternoon when we got a heads up of the unique cloud formations moving through the district. From what we gather it got a lot of people's attention and pictures were posted on Facebook before the edge of this cold front moved through the area.

The different cloud formations put us in mind of an artist going through severe depression. The upper level winds must have really been whipping around up there. Told my buddy we were real glad we weren't trying to fly through that in an airplane!

Wellsville Homecoming Queen To Be Crowned Friday

Crowning ceremonies for the 2011 WHS Fall Sports Homecoming Queen will take place during half-time at tomorrow's football game. The Wellsville Tigers take on the Leetonia Bears beginning at 7 PM Friday, October 21.

This year's Homecoming Court, shown above from the left, is Taylor Hardman, Mikyla Tipton. Kayla Wolfe, Irene Kiser, Rilee Livolsi and Ashley Raffa. All the candidates are members of the WHS Senior Class.

A parade will kick off the Homecoming festivities beginning at the High School about 6:30 PM tomorrow evening before the game. The parade will travel along Clark, turn onto 17th and right onto Commerce to Nicholson Stadium.

The newly crowned Queen will reign over the the Homecoming Dance to be held Saturday evening at the high school. The theme for this year's Homecoming is Candy Land.

Wellsville Lady Tigers Advance In Div. IV Sectional Tournaments

The Wellsville Lady Tigers got off to a good start on the road to Columbus this past Tuesday evening. Opening up in their first game of the NEO Division IV Volleyball Sectional tournaments the Tigers defeated Sebring in three straight sets playing in Lisbon. In spite of losing starter McKenna Pierson the ladies won in convincing fashion, only allowing Sebring a total of 33 points in all three sets.

Pierson, a Junior, was on the bench with an injury. Freshman Shayna Hamilton stepped into the starting line-up and the Tigers never missed a beat.

The Tigers return to action tonight in Lisbon David Anderson High School's Gym A. They take on the 13&9 Southern Local Lady Indians. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM. The Tigers won both of their regular season matches this year against the backyard rivals.

Good Luck Ladies. We're proud of you. Keep focused. Pictures above are from the Lowellville match played October 13 in Wellsville. Winner of tonight's match moves onto the District Semi-final next week.

Three Wellsville Lady Tigers Honored

Three senior Lady Tigers and their folks were recognized in front of the home crowd prior to the Varsity Volleyball match against Lowellville last week. The match against the Lady Rockets in the Tiger's Den wrapped up the Tiger's regular season. While High School Principal Linda Rolley made the introductions the athletes and their parents they were met at mid-court by their respective coaches. The parents were presented with framed pictures of their daughters and Mom was given a corsage in honor of the moment.

The Senior Tigers recognized were Rilee Livolsi, Noelle Amato and Jillian Bergert. Livolsi and Amato are members of the 2011 WHS Volleyball Team and Bergert was a member of the WHS Golf Team.
